In general, the subject matter described in this disclosure can be embodied in methods, systems, and program products for presenting display content on a display of a computing system. A method includes selecting, from a collection of luminance profiles that are each configured to reduce brightness of the display content in different manners, a first luminance profile based on the current display brightness setting, the first luminance profile specifying a first amount of brightness reduction to a peripheral portion of the display content and a first gradient of brightness reduction for a portion of the display content between the peripheral portion of the display content and a center portion of the display content; applying the first luminance profile to the display content to modify the display content by reducing a brightness of the display content according to the first luminance profile; and presenting the display content on the display.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium can include instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one processor, are configured to cause a computing device to determine, in response to a change in a refresh rate of a display, an encoded intensity of at least a portion of an image presented by the display, determine that the encoded intensity is within a predetermined range, and based on determining that the encoded intensity is within the predetermined range, adjust an intensity of a signal for the portion of the image.

Maintaining luminance when refresh rate changes

Techniques and apparatuses are described that perform frequency compensation for a display. In aspects, a first uniformity of multiple regions of the display can be measured at a reference frequency. The display can then be driven at a second frequency and a second uniformity of the multiple regions of the display can be measured. The differences between the first and second uniformity can then be used to generate a compensation mask. XYZ domain data from the first and second uniformity measurements can be used to generate a color model characterization. The color model characterization can be used to convert the XYZ domain data into RGB data when the display is driven at the second frequency to compensate for the differences in uniformity across the multiple regions of the display.

Frequency compensation for a display

A method may include measuring, from a device having a display panel configured to operate at a first refresh rate or a second refresh rate, a difference in luminance of the display panel between the first refresh rate and the second refresh rate for an input gray level. The method may also include applying, based on the measured difference in luminance, a value offset to a default gamma value used by the device for the input gray level when the display panel is operating at the second refresh rate, thereby generating a new gamma value. The method may further include storing, at the device, the new gamma value, where subsequent to the storing, the device is configured to override the default gamma value for the input gray level with the new gamma value when the display panel is operating at the second refresh rate.

In a general aspect, a display device may include a flexible display having a substantially flat central portion and an end portion, a printed circuit film disposed on the end portion of the display, a panel member attached to the printed circuit film, the panel member being bent around a bend axis to form an edge of the display, and a support structure disposed inside of formed edge of the panel member, the support structure being non-parallel to the flat central portion of the display. The panel member may conform to a shape of the support structure.

An apparatus includes one or more light sources configured to provide light having at least three different colors and a backlight layer configured for diffusing the light. A MEMS-based shutter layer includes a plurality of pixel elements having shutters programmably controlled to allow light from the backlight layer to pass through the shutter layer when the MEMS-based shutter is in an open configuration and to block light from passing through the shutter layer when in a closed configuration. A processor is configured to control the provision of the different colored light from the one or more light sources to the backlight layer and configured to control the passage of light from the backlight layer through the plurality of pixel elements to provide a predetermined image on the display apparatus. A hard, scratch resistant cover glass layer is stacked above the MEMS-based shutter layer. The MEMS-based shutter layer is stacked above the backlight layer without any intermediate layer between it and the backlight layer, and the cover glass layer is stacked above the MEMS-based shutter layer without any intermediate layer between the shutter layer and the cover glass layer.

A computer-implemented method for automatically controlling a dynamic backlight control (DBC) of a display is disclosed according to one aspect of the subject technology. The method comprises determining whether an image to be displayed on the display comprises a high-resolution still image, and, if the image comprises a high-resolution still image, then disabling the DBC.

A liquid crystal display screen of an electronic device is formed on a glass substrate. The glass substrate has an active display area with liquid crystal display elements disposed thereon. The active display area is bordered by an edge area of the glass substrate. Antenna elements are disposed in the edge area of the substrate. A touchscreen display device may include a capacitive sensor disposed adjacent to a top surface of the display device, and a resistive sensor disposed below the capacitive sensor. A backlight for providing light to a computer-controlled display device, includes a plurality of first light sources, a plurality of second light sources, and a light guide panel (LGP). The LGP has at least one edge and a surface facing a display surface of the display device and is adapted for guiding light emitted by, and received from, the first and second light sources at one or more edges of the LGP to the surface of the LGP. The first light sources include first light emitting diodes (LEDs) having a peak emission wavelength of greater than 500 nm. The second light sources include second LEDs having a peak emission wavelength of less than 480 nm and phosphor material that absorbs a portion of light emitted from the second LEDs and converts the absorbed light into light emitted from the phosphor material having a peak emission wavelength greater than 500 nm.
