An attachment for a projected head mounted display redirects images designed to be projected on retroreflective screens directly back into the eyes of a user. This permits, for example, the head mounted display to be switched from an augmented reality mode to a virtual reality mode. The attachment can be engaged or disengaged from the head mounted display. The attachment includes a freeform prism.

Virtual reality attachment for a head mounted display

A projected head mounted display system is disclosed that projects images onto a retroreflective screen, which are then reflected back for view by a user. The projected head mounted display system displays computer generated images at multiple focal distances to simulate a light field so as to match eye accommodation to vergence.

Retroreflective light field display

A head mounted projection display includes a polarizing beam splitter stack that includes a waveplate. The polarizing beam splitter stack reduces optical losses and has a low forward extension. The polarizing beam splitter may be used at a 45 degree angle or at a non 45 degree angle relative to the line of view. A correction may be also be performed to the intensity of individual pixels to account for chromatic non-uniformity in the optical response of a retroreflector and other optical components.

A system of active fiducial markers for pose calculation of head mounted displays is described in which information is exchanged among said markers for the purpose of synchronization. Fiducial patterns are made more easily identifiable by selective duty cycles of sub groups of synchronized emitters and means is described to propagate pose information among markers.

System and method for synchronizing fiducial markers

The present invention is a method and apparatus for achieving high work output per unit volume in micro-robotic actuators, and in particular TiNi actuators. Such actuators are attractive as a means of powering nano-robotic movement, and are being developed for manipulation of structures at near the molecular scale. In these very small devices (one micron scale), one means of delivery of energy is by electron beams. Movement of mechanical structures a few microns in extent has been demonstrated in a scanning electron microscope. Results of these and subsequent experiments will be described, with a description of potential structures for fabricating moving a microscopic x-y stage.

Wireless technique for microactivation

A wireless local area network allows roaming of a mobile unit to allow it to serially associate with a number of access points of the network fixed backbone. This roaming is supported by an improved measurement of communications link quality, which includes calculating a mean error free length of a test pattern broadcast by each access point and received by a mobile unit. The test pattern is a digital data message. Thus an accurate measurement of link quality is provided which allows a mobile unit to determine whether it should change its association to another access point having improved communications link quality. Further, a load balancing process is provided to balance the communications load amongst a variety of access points, by allowing mobile units also to switch their association with access points in accordance with a current total data rate at any given access point and also considering the number of currently high data rate mobile units associated with a particular access point at any one time.
