An optical circuit switch device and method for using the device are provided. The device may include a fiber array including a set of optical fibers configured for transmitting optical signals. The device may include a collimator array coupled to the fiber array configured for aligning the optical signals received from the fiber array. The device may include a first mirror array for receiving the optical signals from the collimator array. The device may include a second mirror array for receiving the optical signals from the first mirror array. The device may include a lens located at the fiber array, the lens having a focal point at the second mirror array.

MEMS optical circuit switch

Implied relationships between entities, such as network endpoints, are automatically discovered based on co-temporal events. Events involving pairs of endpoints, such as messaging events in which one endpoint acts as a source and another endpoint acts as a destination, may be detected. Edges between nodes representing those endpoints and other nodes representing other endpoints involved in other recent (co-temporal) events may be added to a progressively constructed graph. Over time, such edges may be progressively weighted in response to the detection of further co-temporal events involving the same endpoints. Relationships between endpoints may be implied based on the resulting accumulated weights of edges linking those endpoints' nodes in the graph even if there is no express relationship between those endpoints in any real-word context (e.g., even if those endpoints are not directly connected in any network, and even if no single event involves both of those endpoints together).

Method and medium for implicit relationship discovery based on cumulative co-temporal activity

In a multiple-axis free-space-coupled single-mode fiber-optic transmission system, such as an optical cross-connect switch, a method and apparatus are provided for the closed loop attenuation of optical beam power signals employed to align and cause dithering via MEMS mirrors which are manipulated to impose on the optical beam frequency modulation and, in particular, a time-varying set of induced mirror angles that yield a desired time history of optical power level that is modulated according to a digital code in the frequency modulation pattern.

In-band signaling in optical cross-connect switch using frequency modulation

Signals employed to align and cause dithering via MEMS mirrors in an optical cross connect switch are manipulated to impose, on the optical beam (steered via the MEMS mirrors) amplitude modulation and in particular a time-varying set of induced mirror angles that yield a desired time history of optical power level that is modulated according to a digital code in the amplitude modulation pattern. The controlled time sequence expressed as a time-varying optical power level can be used for in-band signaling along the same optical channels available for conventional optical data. The amplitude modulated signal is conveyed through the cross connect switch and is useful for example in control and command of the cross connect switch.

A sensor for force is formed from an elastomeric cylinder having a region with apertures. The apertures have passageways formed between them, and an optical fiber is introduced into these passageways, where the optical fiber has a grating for measurement of tension positioned in the passageways between apertures. Optionally, a temperature measurement sensor is placed in or around the elastomer for temperature correction, and if required, a copper film may be deposited in the elastomer for reduced sensitivity to spot temperature variations in the elastomer near the sensors.

A fiber optic sensor system includes a plurality m of sensor segments, each sensor segment further comprising a plurality n of sensor gratings for making measurements. Each sensor grating of the sensor segment operates within a unique wavelength channel, such that a plurality m of sensor segments have m sensors in each wavelength channel, and n wavelength channels, for a total of m*n sensors. A broadband optical source is gated for a duration of time which enables all of the sensors on a sensor segment to reflect optical energy corresponding to their measurement, but not long enough to receive reflected optical energy from more than one sensor on a single wavelenghth channel. In this manner, n wavelength channels of measurement can be time-multiplexed to measure m*n sensors.

Cascade fiber-optic grating-based sensor apparatus and method

An apparatus and method for aligning one or more optical fibers is disclosed. The apparatus includes a carrier having one or more through holes and one or more plugs, each of which is sized to be received in one or more of the three or more through holes. The carrier is adapted to receive one or more waveguides. The waveguides may be aligned by inserting a plug into each of one or more through holes in a carrier; attaching a waveguide to the carrier; aligning the carrier to align the one or more waveguides with respect to an optical device attached to a substrate; and tacking one or more of the plugs to the substrate to maintain the alignment of the waveguides with respect to the optical device.

Floating optical carrier

An optical assembly having a light circulating device is used for routing light and may be used with a receiver. The assembly includes a tunable filter for receiving light traveling from the light circulating device and for selecting which wavelengths of light that reach the receiver. A wavelength routing mechanism optically coupled to the tunable filter and located downstream from the circulator is used to prevent undesired dropping of signal wavelengths. The mechanism has a first operational mode preventing light from reaching the receiver and a second operational mode allowing light to reach the receiver. When the filter is tuning, the mechanism is preferably in the first operational mode. Preferably, the assembly has an arrangement of mirror reflections on the first path and the second path so that an even number of mirror reflection are experienced on one path and an odd number on the other path as light is recombined.

Devices and methods for optical communication systems

For any optically interconnected assembly, the packaging tasks include alignment of one or multiple optical devices, and attachment of aligned modules to a common substrate. The concept disclosed here is a packaging method to assemble pre-aligned optical modules on a common structure called motherboard. The apparatus consists of two components: device carrier or motherboard with openings on the sides and adjustable plugs in the form of pins or balls. The method and apparatus utilize plugs as connection bridges between device carriers and motherboard, allowing solid contacts and a rigid aligned structure among modules. The direct benefits include relaxation of dimensional tolerances on parts and elimination of the need for high-precision spacers.
