A basic architecture for managing digital identity information in a network such as the World Wide Web is provided. A user of the architecture can organize his or her information into one or more profiles which reflect the nature of different relationships between the user and other entities, and grant or deny each entity access to a given profile. Various enhancements which may be provided through the architecture are also described, including tools for filtering email, controlling access to user web pages, locating other users and making one's own location known, browsing or mailing anonymously, filling in web forms automatically with information already provided once by hand, logging in automatically, securely logging in to multiple sites with a single password and doing so from any machine on the network, and other enhancements.

A system, method, and computer-readable medium for instantiating a virtual machine on a computer by way of a physical peripheral device is provided. A virtual machine image may be composed on a portable memory device, such as a USB-flash memory device. Insertion of the physical device in a peripheral terminal is detected by a host function or module, and the physical device is evaluated to determine whether a virtual machine is defined thereby. In the event that the physical device includes a virtual machine image, the host reads the virtual machine image from the physical device and allocates a virtual machine per the read virtual machine image.

System and method are described for an I/O redirection provider for rapidly adapting legacy services, such as Linux services, into CIM management space. In one embodiment, a method of implementing an I/O redirection provider in a management system including a Common Input Model Object Manager ('CIMOM') comprises, for each of a number of script files, determining whether a class corresponding to the script file exists; responsive to a determination that a class corresponding to the script file does not exist, selectively using at least one template to generate a new schema for the script file; and compiling the new schema within the CIMOM.

A method and system are provided for a script driven framework that produces and uses a transactional document. The transactional document provides an interface for modifying configuration information associated with a network resource. In one example, a framework for creating the transactional document includes a transformation file for converting between file formats, multiple responders, a responders file, a mapping configuration file, and a service manager. The responders file assigns at least one responder to create a specified portion of the transactional document based on the configuration information. The mapping configuration file maps between the transactional document and a user interface, which enables the configuration information to be modified through the transactional document via the user interface. The service manager shuts down and restarts services in a predefined order so that the network resource will be configured as defined by the modified configuration information.

Method and framework for using XML files to modify network resource configurations

A system and method of providing associations between resources and actions in a network includes the steps of providing, in a database schema an action object class defining the structure and attributes of actions available in the network. During operation, action objects are created and stored in a database. When a user enters the system, an internal list is created at that user, identifying the resources available to that user and the action objects capable of being performed on those resources. When a user selects an resource object, the action objects associated with that resource object are displayed, the user selects the action, and the action is performed at the resource. In one example the selection of an action objects cause an associated application to be launched. Each action object represents a string of executable code. The executable code may either be hardcoded in the network software, such that action objects are created at network startup, or alternatively may be linked to the network via an external code module.

Apparatus and method for performing actions on object-oriented software objects in a directory services system

A directory services system includes a resource object, such as an application object for accessing a resource associated with the resource object. Attributes of the resource object contain licensing control information. The licensing attributes may be used by executables to control access by a user to properly licensed instances of a resource corresponding to the resource object. Also, a utility may be provided to manage the licensing attributes in the resource object. A licensing function may thus control a resource, via its resource object in the directory services database. Licensing maybe easily implemented by setting a new disabling attribute in the object.

Licensing controller using network directory services

Methods and systems are provided which make security, licensing, and browsing capabilities of directory services available for use with the Java language and environment, and thus provide an alternative to security restrictions imposed on Java applets. A Java component type is created in a directory services schema. The Java component type specifies where a Java class can be found in a LAN or on the Internet. The key attributes of the Java component type are its common name (specifying a Java class) and either a reference to the file containing the Java class's byte codes or a binary stream attribute containing the byte codes. The loadClass( ) method is extended to look for Java classes within a directory services database. The directory services features thus made available include support for securing, metering, and licensing individual Java classes.

Method for managing globally distributed software components

A method and apparatus for management of application programs in a computer network are disclosed. A modified hierarchical database which includes application objects that represent applications and their execution environments is utilized. Administrator tools support the creation, deletion, and modification of application objects. Each application object includes the location of an executable code for a given application, an icon, a working directory name, drive mappings, printer port captures, command line parameters, and similar information. An application launcher queries the database and updates a list of available applications which is kept in the user's desktop. The launcher automatically launches specified applications when a user runs the launcher. The launcher also uses the information in the application object to setup resources needed by the application, to create a process that executes the application, and to clean up after the application terminates. Resource setup involves mapping drives and capturing printer ports as needed. The database, the launcher, and the administrator tools allow consistent tracking and use of information about application programs and their execution environments in the network.

Managing application programs in a computer network by using a database

A method and apparatus are disclosed for managing software components in a network of computers such as a local area network or the Internet. Each software component includes a binary object and at least one interface to the binary object. Suitable software components include OLE components. The network includes a registry file identifying currently registered components and their locations. The network also includes a component server computer on which unregistered components reside. A database associates software component identifiers with software component locators. Suitable databases include Novell NetWare Directory Services databases and Internet search engine databases. Database objects or entries representing unregistered components are found by a search based on the class identifier of a desired component. Software components found by the search are selected, transferred as needed, and then registered, thereby making them available to clients.
