Disclosed are embodiments of an airbag cushion and related airbag modules including a plurality of flaps that may be used to secure the airbag within a module housing. In one embodiment of the invention, first and second flaps are connected with the airbag cushion. The airbag cushion is adapted to be condensed into a compact configuration wherein the first flap extends adjacent to the second flap and in at least approximately the opposite direction as the second flap.

The invention is directed to an actuation system that is contained within a divided pressure vessel which has two chambers under pressure, separated by a common partition and piston. The system is operated by causing an opening in the first chamber, creating a pressure differential between the two chambers which causes the piston to move and fluid to flow between the two chambers. Movement of the piston may or may not expose flow orifices between the two chambers. Pyrotechnic material is enclosed within the piston to generate combustion products for augmenting performance. The two chambers can be used to contain inert working gases or reacting fluids that are isolated from one another until the system is actuated.

Dual stage actuation system

An apparatus for inflating a vehicular inflatable device incorporates a porous piston that is used to compress a stored pressurized oxidant or oxidant and inert gas mixture, while simultaneously introducing a hot, atomized liquid fuel into the gas mixture. The liquid fuel stored in the piston is completely isolated from the oxidant gas, eliminating long-term storage concerns. The combination of elevated pressure and temperature in the stored gas chamber results in immediate and complete combustion of the liquid fuel, accompanied by a dramatic increase in stored gas pressure. A rupture disc and diffuser arrangement is used to control the flow of gases from the stored chamber into the vehicular inflatable device. The apparatus incorporates common fuels and oxidants, and does not produce any particulate matter. By proper selection of the various parameters related to the piston structure and the properties of the stored gas, the performance of the apparatus can be tailored to meet specific requirements. Potentially, the gas mixture may be stored at relatively low pressures.

Liquid-fueled, porous-piston-actuated, inflator for an airbag inflatable

A low pressure sensing device for sensing pressure changes in a pressurized gas storage bottle of an inflater. At least one wire is wrapped around the vessel to sense the expansion or contraction of the vessel due to pressure changes in the vessel. The wire has a first end and a second end. The first end of the wire is secured to the vessel and the remainder of the wire is free to move circumferentially relative to the vessel in response to the expansion and contraction of the vessel. This relative movement can be monitored to determine if a pressure change has occurred in the vessel.

An air bag inflation which includes a gas source and a gas outlet opening for allowing flow of gas from the gas source into the air bag wherein the flow of gas is controlled with a valve assembly including a piston disposed in a cylinder and features a piston against which the gas acts to cause movement of the piston in a first direction in the cylinder to provide an increased flow of gas through the gas outlet opening and further includes a spring disposed in the path of movement of the piston so that as the piston moves in the cylinder the spring provides resistance to the movement of the piston.

Continuously variable controlled orifice inflator

An air bag inflator which includes a gas source and a gas outlet opening for allowing flow of gas from the gas source into the air bag wherein the flow of gas is controlled with a valve assembly including a piston disposed in a cylinder and features a piston which has a pintle shaped surface against which the gas acts to cause movement of the piston in a first direction in the cylinder to provide an increased flow of gas through the gas outlet opening and further includes a spring disposed in the path of movement of the piston so that as the piston moves in the cylinder the spring provides resistance to the movement of the piston.

Pintle controlled orifice inflator

A method of filling and proof testing pressure vessels, such as hybrid air bag inflators, with gas. A method of filling a pressure vessel where the volume and temperature of the gas going into the vessel are controlled to ensure a consistent fill mass. By setting the controlled temperature high enough to cause this fill pressure to exceed the required proof pressure, the vessel can be sealed immediately after filling and the pressure will decrease as the contents cool. If a required hold time is specified in connection with the proof test, the temperature can be set high enough to allow for cooling of the contents during the hold time. The need for a separate proof test step is eliminated and cycle time is greatly reduced.

Method for combined gas fill and proof test of pressure vessels

A hybrid inflator for an inflatable restraint system has a center frame and two tubular end caps forming an elongated housing defining a chamber storing pressurized inert gas. Unit means for heating and delivering the stored gas are mounted in the center frame and positioned to deliver inflation gasses centrally with respect to the elongated housing. In a two unit embodiment, one unit includes a squib and a pyrotechnic gas generant, and the other unit defines an outlet orifice and baffle plate. In another two unit embodiment, the second unit includes an essentially non gas-producing heating composition which, when activated, heats and expands the pressurized gas. In a third embodiment, a unit includes heating material and ignition means and defines the outlet orifice. The center manifold is extruded metal stock with two opposing flat surfaces adapted to mount one or more units.

An initiator device for an air bag inflator contains fluid fuel which, upon reaction, produces gas used in the inflation of an inflatable safety device for an occupant of a motor vehicle.

A heat-enhanced boosted inflator for a vehicle airbag includes a housing defining a storage chamber having compressed inflation gas therein and a heating cup mounted to the housing and defining a portion of a gas delivery path to the airbag. The heating cup contains a heat-producing material and the gas flows through the heat-producing material to heat-expand it. One heat-producing material is thermite (Al+FeO.sub.3) and ignitor means initiate its reaction. A cylindrical heating cup provides an annular heating chamber containing the heat-producing material and further defines an outlet plenum containing inflation gas which is released initially for a 'soft' onset of inflation.

Flow-through heat-enhanced hybrid inflator

The invention is a low cost inflator having a thin-walled hermetic liner, filled with either a stored gas or a flammable fluid mixture, and having a minimal number of joints required for sealing. Structural support is provided by parts that are not required to be hermetic. To activate the inflator, a small amount of pyrotechnic is used to move a piston, crushing the thin-walled liner and compressing the stored inert gas, or alternatively compressing and igniting the stored flammable fluid mixture, causing the gas to escape into the air bag. Optionally, the stored inert gas or flammable fluid mixture can be augmented by hot gases produced by the pyrotechnic. The piston-driving material may be composed of a wide variety of pyrotechnic materials, combustible mixtures of fluid fuels and oxidants, or compatible combinations of both. The inflator design incorporating a stored combustible fluid mixture will, upon ignition of the mixture, produce a heated gas able to more quickly inflate the air bag, as compared to a cold gas or blow down system of the same size and pressure. The combustible fluid mixture is selected so that while production of undesirable incomplete products of combustion and particulate matter are minimized, the fluid mixture must be compressed to ignite, thereby eliminating storage and handling issues problematic to some inflators featuring combustible fluid mixtures.

Piston-actuated air bag inflator with hermetic liner

In an air bag inflation system, the present invention reduces the pressure at which gas flow is initiated from a stored gas inflator into an air bag to be inflated. In many air bag inflation systems gas flow normally begins following rupture of a diaphragm due to a pressure differential. In the present system this differential is reduced.
