A multistage combining sub-system for a distributed antenna system ('DAS') is disclosed. The combining sub-system can receive broadband uplink signals from remote units of the DAS. The sub-system can divide the received broadband uplink signals into sets of narrowband uplink signals. The combining sub-system can select subsets of narrowband uplink signals from the sets of narrowband uplink signals. The subsets can be selected based on the narrowband signals in the subsets having a signal characteristic indicative of useful information. The combining sub-system can combine the selected subsets of narrowband uplink signals for routing to a base station. Combining the selected subsets of narrowband uplink signals can involve excluding narrowband uplink signals that are not included in the selected subsets of narrowband uplink signals.

Multistage combining sub-system for distributed antenna system

The present disclosure describes devices, systems, and methods for allocating bandwidth among communication links in a telecommunication system. Some aspects can involve identifying multiple transmission modes used to transmit downlink signals via remote units of a telecommunications system to groups of terminal devices. Each group of terminal devices may receive downlink signals using a respective transmission mode. Respective weights can be assigned to the groups of terminal devices based on the transmission modes. The downlink signals, which are provided to each remote unit associate with each group of terminal devices, can be configured using a respective signal power that is associated with a respective weight for the group of terminal devices associated with the respective remote unit.

Allocation of bandwidth among communication links in distributed antenna system

A digital multichannel interface for a first unit of a radio distribution system, the digital multichannel interface comprising a first uplink interface and a first downlink interface. The first uplink interface is configured to receive uplink transmit frames from a second unit of the radio distribution system, the uplink transmit frames including frame timing information, the radio distribution system including a plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to at least one of the first unit or the second unit. The first downlink interface is configured to: generate a plurality of reformatted wideband downlink I/Q data streams based on the frame timing information extracted from the uplink transmit frames received from the second unit; generate downlink transmit frames including the plurality of reformatted wideband downlink I/Q data streams; and provide the downlink transmit frames to the second unit.

A traffic load can be determined in a telecommunications system using narrowband signal monitoring. Narrowband signals can be generated from a wideband uplink signal. A resource utilization profile can be estimated for a remote unit based on measured power profiles associated with the narrowband signals. Traffic load can be determined based on the resource utilization profile.

Certain aspects involve a wideband remote unit. The wideband remote unit can include one or more antennas and an analog-to-digital converter ('ADC'). The antenna can receive wideband signals. The wideband signals can include an uplink RF signal and a leaked downlink RF signal. The uplink RF signal can have an uplink signal power at or near a noise level. The leaked downlink RF signal can have a downlink signal power greater than the uplink signal power. The ADC can convert the received wideband signals to digital RF signals representing the uplink signal and the downlink signal. The wideband remote unit can transmit the digital RF signals to a unit of a DAS that is in communication with a base station.

One embodiment is directed to a radio access network (RAN) system comprising a baseband unit (BBU), a plurality of remote radio units, wherein each of the remote radio units is located remotely from the BBU, and an intermediary unit The BBU, the remote radio units, and the intermediary unit are communicatively coupled to each other via a switched Ethernet network. The BBU is configured to transmit downlink fronthaul data to the intermediary unit via the switched Ethernet network. The intermediary unit is configured to receive the downlink fronthaul data from the BBU and simulcast the downlink fronthaul data to the remote radio units via the switched Ethernet network. Each remote radio unit is configured to receive the downlink fronthaul data and generate therefrom at least one downlink radio frequency signal for wireless communication to user equipment (UE) via an associated at least one antenna.

Hybrid RAN/digital DAS repeater system with ethernet transport

A digital repeater system for repeating RF signals comprises: a receiving section for receiving an RF input signal, the RF input signal comprising at least one frequency band including a multiplicity of subbands associated with a multiplicity of communication channels; and at least one transmitting section for transmitting the RF output signal. The receiving section is constituted to digitize the RF input signal to obtain a digital input signal and to isolate, within the digital input signal, the multiplicity of subbands from each other to obtain a multiplicity of digital subband signals. The at least one transmitting section is constituted to combine the digital subband signals to obtain a digital output signal and to convert the digital output signal to an RF output signal. In addition, the receiving section comprises a power profile estimation unit for determining a power estimate for each digital subband signal associated with the multiplicity of subbands and a muting device for muting a digital subband signal of a particular subband based on the power estimate. In this way a digital repeater system for repeating RF signals is provided which allows for a detection of unused portions of a frequency band in order to improve the performance of the overall system.

Certain features relate to a digital multichannel interface between a base station and a repeater in a telecommunications system, such as a distributed antenna system. The digital multichannel interface can provide streams of I/Q samples that carry information from multiple carriers of a wideband communications signal as well as semi-static control information for the telecommunications system. The digital multichannel interface can also transport frame timing information between the base station and the repeater. The frame timing information can maintain synchronization between the uplink transmit frames carrying uplink I/Q samples and the downlink transmit frames carrying downlink I/Q samples.

A system is described. The system includes remote antenna units of a distributed antenna system. The system also includes a combiner unit of the distributed antenna system. The combiner unit is communicatively connectable to a base station and communicatively connectable to the remote antenna units. The combiner unit is configured to receive at least two uplink signals from the remote antenna units. The remote antenna units receive the at least two uplink signals from one or more wireless terminal devices. The combiner unit is also configured to combine the at least two uplink signals into at least one combined uplink signal and send the at least one combined uplink signal to the base station.

Spatial separation sub-system for supporting multiple-input/multiple-output operations in distributed antenna systems

Certain features relate to compensating for a roundtrip delay caused by a distributed antenna system. A delay unit communicatively coupled to a base station can intercept the delay compensation signaling communicated between the digital baseband unit of the base station and the radio transmitter unit of the base station. The delay unit can adjust the delay compensation signaling by adding to the delay compensation signaling the pre-determined fiber delay caused by the DAS. In some aspects, the delay unit can delay the control words for a base station operating under the Common Public Radio Interface standard. In other aspects, the delay unit can delay the round-trip time measurement message for a base station operating under the Open Base Station Architecture Initiative standard.

Static delay compensation in a telecommunications system

The present disclosure describes devices, systems, and methods for frame start optimizing in telecommunication systems. Some aspects may involve receiving, by an aggregation device in the telecommunication system, frames from transmitter devices. Some aspects may also involve determining that buffering may be required to sequence the frames for an aggregation operation performed by the aggregation device. The aggregation operation may include a process that combines frames from transmitter devices. In response to determining that the buffering is required, frame adjustment signals may be transmitted to the transmitter devices. The frame adjustment signals may instruct the transmitter devices to transmit subsequent frames such that the buffering is reduced for a subsequent aggregation operation performed by the aggregation device using the subsequent frames.

Frame start optimizing in telecommunications systems

A distributed antenna system including a plurality of remote antenna units, a passive element coupled to at least one of the remote antenna units and an RFID system located proximate the passive element. The RFID system includes processing circuitry and measurement circuitry and the processing circuitry is configured for receiving an interrogation signal and processing the interrogation signal and providing a response. A digital repeater system for repeating RF signals can include a receiving section for receiving an RF input signal that includes a frequency band with at least one subband associated with a communication channel of a telecommunications network. The receiving section can digitize the RF input signal to obtain a digital signal. A filter device includes a digital filter with a passband for filtering the digital signal. The digital filter is configurable by setting filter coefficients. A gain control device can set the gain of at least a portion of the digital signal. A transmitting section can transmit an RF output signal and can convert the digital signal to the RF output signal for transmission. A control unit can configure the filter coefficients of the digital filter based on the gain setting of the gain control device.

An optimization system for use in a digital repeater system comprises at least one input port for receiving a carrier signal associated with a communication channel of a telecommunication network, at least one meter unit for obtaining an estimate of the error vector magnitude for the carrier signal, and at least one crest factor reduction unit for dynamically reducing, based on the estimate of the error vector magnitude, the crest factor of the carrier signal.
