A wheel bearing apparatus incorporating a wheel speed detecting apparatus has an outer member, an inner member, double row rolling elements, a sensor holder, and a pulser ring. The sensor holder cover has a cylindrical fitting portion press-fit onto the inner side end portion of the outer member. A flange portion extends radially inward from the fitting portion. The flange portion is in close contact with the end face of the outer member. A bottom portion extends further radially inward from the flange portion. The holding portion is integrally joined to the bottom portion. The flange portion is formed with a flat surface so that it forms an abutting width larger than 5 mm or more, against the end face of the outer member, or larger than 50% or more, relative to the flat width of the end face of the outer member.

A wheel bearing apparatus for a driven wheel of a vehicle has an outer member, an inner member and rolling elements between the two. The outer member has a body mounting flange for mounting it to a knuckle of a suspension apparatus. The knuckle has a disc shaped bottom portion. The outer member is secured to the knuckle by fastening bolts. The body mounting flange abuts against the bottom portion of the knuckle. The inner side end of the inner member is closed by the knuckle. A plurality of pins is secured to the knuckle. Pin bores to receive the pins are formed on the body mounting flange. The pin bores radially positioning the outer member relative to the knuckle.

The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a sensor rotor with a minimum waste of material. The sensor rotor is manufactured by forming a plurality of ring pieces having outer and inner edges that are identical in curvature to each other, arranging the ring pieces in the shape of a ring, magnetizing the ring pieces to create opposite magnetic poles alternately in the circumferential direction of the ring pieces to form a magnetized ring, and fixing the magnetized ring to the inside of a press-in ring. Since the outer edge of each ring piece substantially coincides with the inner edge of the adjacent ring piece, it is possible to eliminate the waste of material between the adjacent ring pieces.

A wheel-supporting bearing has a built-in rotation sensor which can be manufactured at low cost and which is high in mechanical strength and sealing capability at the joint portion between the rotation sensor and a harness. The rotation sensor, which is fixed to the inner ring, is made up of a stator formed by pressing, and a coil wound inside the stator. An annular plate is coupled to the back of the stator. A resin molding is fixed to the annular plate. A lead extending from the coil is connected to the harness in the resin molding. The lead is covered with a resin sleeve and surrounded by seal rings to reinforce and seal the joint portion between the lead and the harness.
