Themes provide the mobile phone with changeable characteristics pertaining to the appearance and sound presented by the mobile phone. A theme profile associated with the mobile phone contains data pertaining to which theme to apply to the mobile phone and when to transition to another theme as well as where theme content data is located. The mobile phone then waits for a triggering event to occur. When such a triggering event occurs, it causes a transition from the currently active theme to another theme. A new theme based on an associated triggering event is applied to the mobile phone changing its look and feel.

Methods for acquiring service for a wireless terminal can include the steps of camping on a control channel and receiving a request for an operation to be performed by the wireless terminal that is performed by the wireless terminal mutually exclusive of camping on the control channel. Control channel information associated with the control channel on which the wireless terminal was camped is stored and the requested operation is performed. The stored control channel information is used to acquire service for the wireless terminal. Related wireless terminals and systems are disclosed.

A method of controlling a mobile terminal allows it to search for possibly higher priority service providers in response to receiving an indication that more than the default number of service providers is available in a given service area, without dropping its current radio channel. When only the standard number of service providers is available in a given area, the mobile terminal uses standard frequency bands and corresponding radio channel allocations during scanning operations. When more than the standard number of service providers is available, the mobile terminal uses received information defining the non-standard spectrum allocation supporting the available service providers in its scanning operations. In a wireless communication system operating in accordance with TIA/EIA-136 standards, the mobile terminal may scan its current hyperband, alternate hyperband, or both the current and the alternate hyperbands (e.g., 800 MHz and 1900 MHz hyperbands), for higher priority service providers.

Methods and systems are provided for a wireless terminal to select a control channel from a plurality of channels provided on a plurality of respective operating frequencies in which a first group of the operating frequencies are first scanned to locate a control channel that satisfies a first set of selection criteria. During this scan, channels are identified that fail to satisfy the first set of selection criteria but that have an increased probability of satisfying a second set of selection criteria. If a channel that satisfies the first set of selection criteria is not located during the first scan, the wireless terminal determines an order in which a second group of operating frequencies are to be scanned based on the identified channels, and then scans the second group of operating frequencies in the determined order to locate a control channel that satisfies the second set of selection criteria.

Methods and systems for scanning and locking onto a control channel via a multi-level search in a wireless communications system

A digital radio communication system has a mobile station and a base station, the mobile station transmitting messages to the base station in a series of frames. Each frame has a header with a frame number and an optional polling indicator. A method of determining whether the base station is capable of receiving a message in automatic retransmission request (ARQ) format is provided. The method includes the step of transmitting from the mobile station to the base station a single frame in ARQ format with a polling indicator set such that the base station is prompted to send a status frame in ARQ format if the base station is capable of receiving messages in ARQ format. The method also has the step of determining if a status frame in ARQ format is sent from the base station to the mobile station in response to the single frame. A mobile station operating according to the method of the present invention is also provided.

A method for increasing the bandwidth within an air interface between a mobile station and a base station is disclosed. The method involves the seizing of multiple random access channels on the dedicated control channel between a single mobile station and the base station. Individual messages are then transmitted over each of the seized random access channels on a frame-by-frame basis. Up to six channels may be seized and utilized at any particular time.

The present invention relates to multiline fixed cellular systems in which a plurality of plain ordinary telephone service connections utilize a plurality of cellular terminals to conduct radio communication. In particular, the present invention discloses novel methods and systems of solving the paging problem in multiline fixed cellular systems. In the invention, a plurality of plain ordinary telephone service connections having an upper page range and a lower page range are connected with a fixed cellular switch. The fixed cellular switch is connected with a plurality of cellular terminals which are capable of conducting radio communication with a cellular network. A control unit is provided connected with the fixed cellular switch and the cellular terminals for switching an activated plain ordinary telephone service connection to an available cellular terminal when an incoming page falls within the upper page range and lower page range.

Methods and systems for solving the paging problem for a multiline fixed

A mobile communications device such as a pager or a cellular telephone enters a low power state more promptly than under TIA/EIA/IS-136 standards when an incoming message is pending for the device but is delayed by a first message broadcast for another such device. The device calculates the number of frames or SPACH slots required under those standards for the message for the other device; if that number is more than that reserved for the message for itself then it powers down immediately until the next paging channel slot is to be received. If the number of frames or SPACH slots required for the message for the other device is the same as or less than that reserved for the message for itself, then the device powers down immediately only for the duration of the message for the other device. By so powering down, the device achieves great savings in battery power as compared to present practices, without delay in reading incoming signals directed to the device.

A mobile station and an intelligent roaming method for selecting a best service provider from a plurality of service providers. The mobile station includes a database for storing a plurality of identifier codes that correspond with the plurality of service providers. The database also has an overlap flag added to each of the stored identifier codes. The mobile station uses the intelligent roaming procedure to locate a first channel and a second channel broadcast by the service providers, where each channel contains one of the stored identifier codes and at least one of the located and stored identifier codes has an overlap flag that is set. The intelligent roaming procedure evaluates channel information associated with the first channel and channel information associated with the second channel to select a best channel for supporting a call. Thereafter, the mobile station selects the best service provider by utilizing the selected channel.

Method and apparatus for selecting a service provider

Disclosed herein is the method of operating a cellular mobile station to identify a suitable cellular control channel for entering a camping state with a highest priority cellular service provider, based on data stored in the cellular mobile station, that is preferred to a current cellular control channel the mobile station is camping on. The method comprising the steps of: (a) measuring received signal strength of a plurality of available cellular control channels; (b) attempting to lock onto the available cellular control channels having highest signal strength; (c) determining if a locked onto cellular control channel is a highest priority cellular control channel and, if so, then camping on that cellular control channel, and otherwise returning to camping on the current control channel; and (d) periodically interrupting any of steps (a)-(c) to receive control data from the current cellular control channel and then returning to the interrupted step.

Paging performance during intelligent roaming

In a radiocommunication system including at least one base station and a mobile station connected across a first radio channel to the base station, the signal strengths of the first radio channel and neighboring radio channels are measured in the mobile station to determine whether reselection to a neighboring radio channel is necessary. Each radio channel is measured at various points in a frame period or in different frame periods, the measurements occurring in different time slots. The points at which the signal strength measurements of each radio channel are made may be rotated among the different frame periods, the measurements may be made at random points in the different frame periods, or the starting times of the measurements may be rotated among or occur randomly in the different frame periods. Alternately, the signal strengths of each radio channel may be measured at different points in a single frame period. The measurements of the signal strength of the each radio channel are averaged, and the averaged measurements are compared to determine whether reselection from the first radio channel to a neighboring radio channel is necessary.

In connection with paging displacement operation, a mobile station delays entry into sleep mode in order to read a specified number of subsequent alternate (i.e., every other) additional paging channel slots to receive a paging message. During the paging channel slots located between those designated for reading paging displacement related paging messages, the mobile station makes more efficient use of limited battery supplied energy resources by making any requisite signal strength measurements.
