In order to minimize the loss of cryogen during transportation of superconductive magnet systems, or indeed at any time that the refrigerator is turned off, part of the boil-off gas is directed from the cryogen vessel through the refrigerator interface and past the refrigerator to cool the refrigerator. Some of the heat conducted along the refrigerator into the system is intercepted and removed by that part of the boil-off gas. The heat load onto the cryogenic vessel is thereby reduced, which in turn reduces the boil-off of cryogen from the cryogenic vessel. This part of the boil-off gas is then vented from the system along with the remainder of the boil-off gas, for example to leave the cryogenic liquid vessel via the access neck.

Reduction of cryogen loss during transportation

The present invention relates to a cryostat having a service neck for access to a superconducting magnet. In many cryogenic applications components, e.g. superconducting coils for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), superconducting transformers, generators, electronics, are cooled by keeping them in contact with a volume of liquefied, the whole cryogenic assembly being known as a cryostat. In order to operate a superconducting magnet, it must be kept at a temperature below its superconducting transition temperature. A cryostat must provide access to the vessel containing the liquefied helium for the initial cooling of the magnet to its low operating temperature, for periodic refilling of systems where there is a loss of helium, and provide sufficient access whereby to enable operation and maintenance of the magnet. The present invention seeks to provide an access neck to a cryostat such as helium vessel with a minimum heat load and accordingly provides a cryostat assembly, wherein a service neck comprising at least one positive and one negative current lead is arranged such that one of the leads is formed by the neck tube wall and the space between a neck tube wall and the second current lead forms a gas path for venting and/or filling or other services.

A cryogenic magnet system, comprising a cryogenic vessel () housing a magnet winding, a vacuum jacket () enclosing the cryogenic vessel and a refrigerator () at least partially housed within the vacuum jacket and thermally linked () to the cryogenic vessel. In particular, the system further comprises an electromagnetic shield.

A quench line and exit plenum configuration for a mobile MRI system housed in a transportable trailer includes an exit plenum with deflector plates that direct the quench flow of cold gases upward and away from surrounding objects. In addition, the plenum also includes dual vents to facilitate optimum gas flow and water drainage. The deflector plates are configured to utilize the Venturi effect to create an auxiliary flow of the ambient air to help deflect the flow of cold gases away from nearby pedestrians, when the magnet is quenching, and to enable service personnel to fill the magnet safely while in the vicinity of the exit plenum.

The present invention relates to pulse tube refrigerators for recondensing cryogenic liquids. In particular, the present invention relates to the same for magnetic resonance imaging systems. In many cryogenic applications components, e.g. superconducting coils for magnetic resonance imaging (mri), superconducting transformers, generators, electronics, are cooled by keeping them in contact with a volume of liquified gases (e.g. helium, neon, nitrogen, argon, methane). In a first aspect, the present invention provides a pulse tube refrigerator PTR pulse tube refrigerator (PTR) arrangement within a cryogenic apparatus, wherein a regenerator tube of the PTR is finned. In this configuration the fins or baffles, are believed to increase the surface area available for distributed heat transfer from the helium atmosphere to the regenerator.

A super-conducting electro-magnet for use in an MRI system comprising a helium vessel within which magnet windings are positioned, a vacuum chamber within which the helium vessel is contained, at least one thermal shield positioned between the helium vessel and the vacuum chamber in spaced apart relationship, a service turret including a refrigerator thermally coupled to the said at least one shield for cooling purposes, a tube which extends through the turret from the windings to facilitate filling, and conductors which extend through the turret from the windings to facilitate current injection to the windings and to provide a vent for the helium gas.

A cryostat asssembly comprises at least one substantially heat insulating wall surrounding a cooled region for restricting heat flow into the cooled region. A refrigeration system is provided having a heat absorbing portion coupled with the wall to enable heat to transfer to the heat absorbing portion, the refrigeration system also having a heat evacuating portion to enable absorbed heat to be evacuated from the cryostat assembly.
