An apparatus for folding a fibrous insulation batt having a length and a width is disclosed. The batt has first and second sections, where each section is approximately one half the length of the batt. The apparatus comprises a lower conveyor for conveying folded batts in a first direction, and an upper conveyor which is positioned above the lower conveyor and move in the first direction to define a folded batt exit path. The apparatus further comprises a folding member for folding the insulation batt, where the folding member is adapted to contact the batt across its width. The folding member is mounted for movement to initially push the batt in a second direction, and then subsequently push the batt in the first direction, thereby pushing the batt along the folded batt exit path. The movement of the folding member folds the batt so that the first section of the folded batt is generally parallel to and contacting the second section.

A fibrous insulation batt having a length and a width and including a first and second section, where each section is approximately one half the length of the batt, is folded so that the first section is generally parallel to and contacting the second section. The batt has two folds across its width and located between the first and second sections. The two folds are spaced apart from each other a distance approximately equal to the thickness of the uncompressed insulation batt. The two sections of the batt remain generally parallel to and contact each other when the batt is laid horizontal and in an unrestrained condition.

Package for compressible material

For applying a covering to glass fibre insulation batts, the batts are deposited in succession into a vertically elongate batt stacking space to form a stack of the batts, and upper and lower compression plates each having a concave compression surface the shape of which compression surfaces correspond at least substantially to the shapes of convex upper and lower surfaces of the package, are displaced vertically by an amount sufficient to compress the stack between the upper and lower compression surfaces with a compression ratio of 6:1 to 11:1. A covering of flexible sheet material is then provided around the compressed stack to maintain the stack in a compressed state. The concave compression surfaces make possible a higher compression of the batts than was possible with the flat compression plates used in the prior art, without damaging the batts and therefore while allowing satisfactory recovery of the batts when released from their compressed state.

Packaging fibre batts

An apparatus for converting thermoplastic molten material stream into fibers to produce fibers, particularly to produce mineral wool from molten mineral raw material. The device combines a slinger cup wheel with a pair of fiberizing rotors. The rotors have each a concavely rounded peripheral groove. The cup wheel is virtually completely surrounded by the two grooves of the rotors so that there is no random spreading of the molten material as all of discrete, fine streams produced by the cup are attenuated by the rotors. As there is no sudden 'bouncing' of the attenuated material, the invention produces an improved uniformity of the diameter of final fibres and substantially reduces the shot content in the final product. The stress to which the machinery is subjected is also limited.
