A method for making fluid seals with a mold which includes an outside diameter surface on a fixed part and a seal flange support surface on another portion of the fixed part. A seal casing with a shouldered mounting flange having major and minor out side diameters and a radial flange is positioned in the fixed mold part. A movable mold member includes an upper, outer cylindrical surface for engaging the inside surface of the casing major diameter to form a flash barrier which moves during mold closure. Both the fixed mold part and the movable mold part include inwardly directed surfaces defining the mold cavity; the flange support is apertured for the elastomer to flow from the seal body-forming part of the cavity to the gasket-forming part of the cavity. The heel-forming cavity part lies between the lower part of the insides surface of the mold and the outer surface of the casing minor diameter.

Method of forming a fluid seal

Apparatus, for molding a seal in an annular metal casing, including core and surrounding mold insert members for engaging and holding the casing against deflection during molding. In re embodiment the casing is tapered and the apparatus is configured to accommodate the casing is tapered and the apparatus is configured to accommode the casing shape. In a second embodiment concentric resilient members are provided to bias the core away from a bold base member.

Apparatus for manufacturing seal components

A mold assembly for making fluid seals. The mold includes an outside diameter surface on a fixed part and a seal flange support surface on another portion of the fixed part. A seal casing with a shouldered mounting flange having major and minor outside diameters and a radial flange is positioned in the fixed mold part. A movable mold member includes an upper, outer cylindrical surface for engaging the inside surface of the casing major diameter to form a flash barrier which moves during mold closure. Both the fixed mold part and the movable mold part include inwardly directed surfaces defining the mold cavity; the flange support is apertured for the elastomer to flow from the seal body-forming part of the cavity to the heel gasket-forming part of the cavity. The heel-forming cavity part lies between the lower part of the inside surface of the mold and the outer surface of the casing minor diameter.

Mold assembly for forming a seal unit

A method of manufacturing a composite seal assembly. A primary sealing ring in generally frustoconical form is cut from a cylindrical billet of a resinous fluorocarbon material so as to have first and second principal surfaces each inclined with respect to the axis of the billet. The ring thus formed is supported against movement by disposing a relatively rigid annular casing unit adjacent the ring, with the ring lying within the casing opening, and bonding the casing element to the seal ring by molding an elastomeric collar of thin cross-section between a portion of the second surface of the ring and a part of said casing.

Method of and apparatus for molding a composite fluorocarbon helix seal

A fluorocarbon seal including a formed resin ring element which is adapted to serve both as a primary lip and an auxiliary or excluder lip, in which at least a portion of the lip surface contains hydrodynamic formations consisting of grooves or the like indented or debossed surfaces rather than upstanding or protruding vanes or ribs, and wherein the resinous seal ring element as a whole is in the form of a generally frusto-conical ring having an intermediate portion thereof bonded by an annular collar unit to an associated casing.

Composite teflon helix seal

An apparatus for unloading molded articles from a molding machine having a reciprocally mounted unloader assembly. The unloader assembly is provided with a plurality of slotted bars to receive a plurality of molded articles between adjacent pairs thereof. The molded articles retained between adjacent pairs of unload bars are moved to a position at which cam followers coupled to the moveable unloader assembly contact respective fixed stop plates. Upon contact, the unloader assembly swings about a pivot rod to deposit the molded articles into a collection element.

Apparatus for unloading molded articles

A seal assembly for creating a fluid seal between first and second, relatively movable elements, at least one of which is arranged for rotation about a given axis. The seal has a mounting portion thereof adapted to be fixedly associated in use with said first element, a dirt exclusion portion and an oil retention portion. The dirt exclusion portion has a plurality of annular excluder lips, and the excluder lips, as manufactured, extend radially inwardly and are spaced axially apart from each other. The lips also have an inside diameter substantially smaller than that of said second relatively movable element, and the excluder lips, in position of use, contact and lie along the second element, as installed, the lips are flexed so that the inner portions thereof extend radially inwardly as well as axially away from the region to be sealed. The oil retention portion comprising a generally annular, flexible primary hydrodynamic sealing lip portion disposed, in use, in a generally facing relation to the second element and defined by at least partially converging first and second, at least partially axially undulating frustoconical lip surfaces meeting each other along an axially undulating seal band area formed at the convergence of the undulating lip surfaces.

Sinuous seal with auxiliary excluder lips

A molding press for insert molding of composite articles. The press has upper and lower plates movable between open and closed positions, and a die set positioned between the plates. The die set includes a core member with surfaces defining a portion of the molding cavity and another surface for receiving and supporting the insert. The core member also includes means defining a part of an area for receiving a charge of curable material and a part of a scrap forming cavity. A second mold member has surfaces defining a second portion of the article forming cavity and a second portion of said strap forming cavity, and the second mold member also includes means for engaging the insert and cooperating with it to form an axially movable flash barrier. The second mold part also has means cooperating with the insert to form a second, stationary flash barrier on an angularly related surface of the insert. The third mold member is adapted to reciprocate relative to the first and second members and has one surface for engaging a portion of said charge of moldable material for moving it from the receiving area through the scrap forming area and into the molding cavity. The first and third elements also include surfaces lying opposite each other in the closed position of said mold which serve to define a slightly spaced apart, substantially circumferentially continuous passage of reduced cross-section which separates scrap forming area from the article forming cavity. The second and third mold members are resiliently urged, in the closed position of the mold towards the first member by separate sets of resilient means interposed between portions of the second and third members and portions of the top mold plate. The method includes establishing a movable flash barrier by engaging an axial insert surface during mold closure. A seal with a unitary body, having two or more lips and a deep axial cross-section, is also described.

Insert molding apparatus with movable flash barrier

A multiple lip seal for oil and like fluids. The seal has an annular metal or like rigid casing portion of generally U-shaped cross section. A seal body is bonded to one flange of the U, and the body includes axially spaced apart, radially extending lips formed integrally with said body. In the preferred form, the flange about which the body is formed extends axially a distance at least as far as the extent of the multiple lip so that there is radial support for each of the lips, while the oppositely directed or other flange of the U-shaped casing remains free from rubber for mounting in a machine counterbore. The axially inner, intermediate and outer lips have different inside diameters in some cases and have the same diameters in other cases. Preferably, the body is thickest, and the radial extent of the lips is the shortest, at the axially inner portion of the seal. The seal assemblies can be made in either radially inwardly-acting form or in radially outwardly-acting form, depending upon the intended application. The U-shaped flange provides convenience of mounting and enables the minimal amount of rubber to be used, while providing the radial support for the axially inner seal lips referred to above.

Multiple lip seal

A mold assembly for injection molding of precision composite articles, which is particularly adapted for use in making highly precise oil seals having a rubber body bonded to a metal mounting flange. The assembly comprises a bottom mold member adapted to be supported in fixed relation to a vertically reciprocable top mold member, the bottom member has means forming an upwardly opening annular recess for supporting therein a circular oil seal stamping of generally L-shaped cross section with an inner marginal portion extending in a radial direction into a mold cavity formed by spaced confronting surface portions of top and bottom mold members when in the closed position, and the top mold member having a downwardly opening annular recess in which a spring pressed stripper plate is retained for limited vertical movement by means of coiled spring member insertable in a groove in an edge of the stripper plate when the stripper plate is positioned in the recess in the top mold member enabling the mold assembly to be used for molding of oil seal units having stampings of different radial and axial dimensions.

Retainer assembly for mold plate

An apparatus and method for molding an article such as finished seal of known type, comprising a flexible member bonded to a rigid element. During conventional manufacture, the rigid element is clamped between upper and lower seal-forming molding elements and, in many instances, after engagement of the rigid element, continued traveling of the upper and lower molding elements toward each other is used to provide a 'closed stroke'. In the closed stroke operation of the present invention, the continued traveling in the closed stroke stage requires no substantial deformation or shaping of the rigid element. An apparatus and method is disclosed in which the molding elements include an outer movable, biased, annular casing engaging element, for example a ring, which is biased in an extended position. The ring is retractable against the bias during the continued travel of the molding elements in the closed stroke. The distance of relative travel of the retractable floating member is the distance of the closed stroke. In a particularly advantageous embodiment, the retraction of the floating element is utilized to even greater advantage in an apparatus which also provides a vacuum assist in filling the seal-shaping mold cavity, and which provides automatic protection of the vacuum system in the final stages of the filling of the mold cavity.
