A laser crosslink apparatus includes an optical device (, FIG.), a beam splitter (), an acquisition channel and a tracking and communication channel. The acquisition channel includes a high density optical fiber bundle and an acquisition channel device (). The optical device () receives laser light from a wide field of view, and the beam splitter () splits the light into the two channels. The high density optical fiber bundle () has one end () in a focal plane of the optical device, and another end () coupled to the acquisition channel device (). The acquisition channel device () includes an optical receiver array (, FIG.). The location of spot footprints on the optical receiver array determines the direction from which the laser light is received within the wide field of view. The optical fiber bundle allows the optical receiver array to be located away from the optical device, near the receiving/tracking system, where it can be more easily shielded from the harmful effects of space.

Laser crosslink methods and apparatus

A method and apparatus for generating digitally modulated signals in which a serial data stream of digital signals to be modulated ( ) is provided, the serial data stream being converted into real and imaginary components ( ) which are then converted into a complex polar signal ( ) representing the serial data stream. A carrier of appropriate frequency is generated by an infinite impulse response filter ( ) and the polar signal is mixed with the output of the infinite impulse response filter to provide a representation of the complex polar signal modulated at the frequency generated by the infinite impulse response filter ( ). Subsequently the imaginary component of the resulting representation is stripped from the signal ( ) and the real component of the resulting representation is applied to a digital to analog converter ( ) to produce an analog version of the serial data stream.

Method and apparatus for generating digitally modulated signals

An optical interconnect system ( ) includes an array of optical sources ( ), a high-density fiber bundle ( ), and an array of optical receivers ( ). The density of the fiber bundle is such that each optical source ( ) couples light to multiple fibers within the bundle. The fiber bundle has a consistent cross section along its length so that the footprint of fibers ( FIG. ) illuminated by a spot ( ) from an optical source illuminates a similar footprint ( FIG. ) over the optical receivers ( ). The optical receiver array has a density of optical receivers such that the footprint of fibers corresponding to a single optical source illuminates at least one optical receiver. A method ( FIG. ) for creating optical source/receiver pairs excites each optical source in turn and detects energy at the optical receiver array.

Optical interconnect method and apparatus

A zero-drift constellation (,FIG.,) is used to simplify the tracking and hand-off requirements of terrestrial-based user terminals (,FIG.,). Each satellite (,FIG.,) traces out a common ground track which has a number of southbound segments and an equal number of adjacent northbound segments. This allows user terminals (,) to employ antennas with only one degree of freedom to track satellites (,) in zero-drift constellation (,). User terminals (,) perform hand-offs with satellites (,) that are within a limited field of view with respect to user terminal (,). User terminal (,) tracks a first satellite until a crossover point is reached and then performs a hand-off to a second satellite traveling in the opposite direction along an adjacent segment. User terminal (,) tracks the second satellite until another crossover point is reached and then performs a hand-off to a third satellite traveling in the same direction as the first satellite along an adjacent segment.

Satellite communications systems using satellites in a zero-drift constellation

A planar array antenna for use with an earth-based subscriber unit generates receive or transmit communications beams through the use of digital beamforming networks (,) which provide beam steering in a first dimension. In another dimension, the communications beams are synthesized by way of a waveguide structure (,, FIG.,) which is repeated for each row of the antenna array. The waveguide outputs are weighted due to the positioning of coupling slots (,) or coupling probes (,) which transfer carrier signals to and from each waveguide. The slots or coupling probes from the waveguides are coupled to a group of barium strontium titanate (BST) (,, FIG.,) or micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) switch (,, FIG.,) phase shift elements which are under the control of a control network (,, FIG.,). The resulting signals are radiated by the antenna elements of the planar antenna array (,, FIG.,) to form a communications beam.

Low cost beam steering planar array antenna

A mechanical scanning and digital beamforming antenna (,FIG.,) uses a receive and transmit digital beamforming network (FIG.,) to provide communications beam scanning in a first plane. In a second plane, a reflective surface (FIG.,) is used to focus and scan the communications beam. Through proper orientation of the reflective surface (,), a communications satellite (FIG.,) can be tracked by way of electronic scanning by way of the transmit or receive digital beamforming network (FIG.,). Thus, the complexity of the digital beamforming network is reduced as is the wear on the mechanical components of the antenna. The mechanical scanning and digital beamforming antenna (,FIG.,) makes use of a second digital beamforming network (FIG. 3,,) and reflective surface (FIG.,) to ensure that two communications satellites can be simultaneously tracked.

Combined mechanical scanning and digital beamforming antenna

An enhanced digital beamformer (EDBF) (210, FIG. 2) is provided for use in a transceiver subsystem (200, FIG. 2) for mitigating interference and increasing the frequency reuse factor in communication systems. The EDBF is used to produce wide nulls (520, FIG. 5) in at least one steerable antenna beam pattern. By directing wide nulls at undesired signals, the EDBF provides a more efficient processing of antenna beam patterns in communication systems. The EDBF is used in geostationary satellites, non-geostationary satellites, and terrestrial communication devices. The EDBF combines a unique algorithm, a special processor, and an array antenna to significantly improve the capacity of current and future communication systems, while remaining compatible with existing modulation techniques.

Method and apparatus for producing wide null antenna patterns

An rf transmitter (319) used with a single cell battery (101) includes a voltage boost circuit (211) integral with a class S amplifier (290). An rf signal to be amplified is separated into its envelope (amplitude) and phase components. The phase component is applied to the input of a power amplifier (260). The envelope is applied to a pulse width modulator (275) which is used to modulate the voltage supplied to the power amplifier (260). The pulse width modulator (275) controls electronic switches (285, 286) which are disposed between the single cell battery (101) and the primary of a step up transformer (211). The secondary of the transformer (211) is coupled to supply voltage to the power amplifier (260). In this manner, the class S amplifier is powered directly from the single cell battery, via a the transformer (211), and power consumption is substantially reduced due to the switching operation of the switches (285, 286).
