A packaging laminate for a container which enables a blend monolayer to be effectively extrusion coated onto the paperboard substrate as the product contact layer without the need for tie layers or multilayer co-extrusion equipment. The blend monolayer has superior oxygen transmission resistance and has excellent pinhole resistance compared to straight polyethylene monolayer. The product contact layer consists of a blend of a polyolefin polymer, a polyamide, and a compatibilizer in a preferred embodiment. The monolayer blend is a low cost alternative to multilayer structures.

The invention addresses the use of a composite carbon dioxide scavenging filler which has been dispersed uniformly into a polymeric matrix. The resultant layer can then be coated or laminated onto a paper, paperboard, foil, or other substrates. It can also be made into a cast or blown film. The carbon dioxide scavenging structure thus created desirably contains a polymeric matrix binder as the filler dispersion medium, one or more particular carbon dioxide scavenging fillers, one or more moisture producing/retaining agents or moisture retaining agents, and, optionally, one or more polymeric or surfactant dispersion/wetting agents aiding the wetting and the uniform dispersion of the fillers in the matrix. This allows products contained in a package, such as roasted coffee, or produce, to maintain freshness and counteract pressure buildup in a package which results in bulging, rupture, loss of freshness, poor shelf appearance, and increased anaerobic bacterial activity.

The specification discloses a layered composite containing a barrier layer comprising clay homogeneously dispersed in a continuous phase of polymeric material. The barrier layer is especially useful in the manufacture of liquid food containers. The clay/polymer barrier layer is formed by dispersing the clay in molten polymeric material to form a homogeneously dispersed clay in a continuous polymer phase. The barrier layer is then applied adjacent one surface of a paperboard component of the composite at a thickness ranging from about 1 to 30 microns. The paperboard may be coated or uncoated at the time the barrier layer is applied, and additional polymeric barrier layers and tie or adhesive layers may be used in combination with the barrier layer to provide reduced oxygen and water vapor transport through the composite. The method of preparing and applying the barrier layer to a paperboard substrate also significantly reduces process steps required to provide coated paperboard with improved barrier properties.

Clay-filled polymer barrier materials for food packaging applications

The present invention is directed to a barrier layer which has the ability to substantially prevent the diffusion of stains, such as plasticizers and dyes or other chemicals, onto a surface of a surface covering, from a surface or object in which the surface covering is placed upon. The barrier layer contains a polyamide or polyurethane and is preferably located above a substrate or base layer in a surface covering. The barrier layer preferably is located between a UV topcoat layer and a vinyl wear layer. The present invention also relates to a method of preventing stain migration onto a surface covering from a surface on which the surface covering is placed by use of the barrier layer of the present invention and also relates to methods of making surface coverings containing the barrier layer of the present invention.
