A backer plate ( ) secured to leading end portion ( ) of flexible film circuit ( ), providing rigidity to facilitate manipulation of the circuit during mating with and unmating from a receptacle connector ( ). Backer plate ( ) may either be molded of insulative material or be conductive to serve as a ground connection. Backer plate ( ) has side walls ( ) beside the flex film that provide flanges ( ) to precisely guide mating with connector ( ) along slots ( ), and may also provide detents ( ) for retention in the connector. Backer plate ( ) may also provide bosses ( ) to stop forward movement at a precise location aligning the strip circuits with connector contacts ( ). Flexible film circuit connector

The invention is directed to an electrical connector assembly having a connector housing for terminating wires from a shielded cable. The cable has shielding therearound. A grounding clip commons the shielding from the cable. The ground clip has an opening through which the cable extends with tabs therein to provide electrical connection to the shielding of the cable and electrical engagement tabs to provide engagement with an adjacent structure. An overmolded housing is molded over the cable and the grounding clip, wherein the electrical engagement tabs extend above and below the overmolded housing.

The invention is directed to an electrical connector (10) including a housing (12) with a mating face (16), a rear face (18) opposite to the mating face (16), a side (20), and an end (26), the end (26) having a holding feature (30) thereon. The housing (12) is mountable onto a surface of a substrate with either the rear face (18) or the [mating face] side (20) being placed against the surface. A hold down (40) is securable to the housing feature (30). The hold down (40) has a substrate securing portion (42) and housing securing portion (46). The housing securing portion (46) is securable to the holding feature (30) in at least two orientations to secure the housing (12) to the substrate when it is mounted in either orientation.

Connector (10) including a connector subassembly (20) with a pair of covers (16) secured thereover extending from a mating face (24) to a cable exit to define a strain relief section (36) extending along a portion of cable (12). A pair of latch members (60) is secured in the connector, each in a respective channel (22) defined in the covers along opposite sides of subassembly (20). Actuating sections (68) protrude rearwardly along strain relief section (36) and are deflectable theretoward during actuation to release latching sections (64) from a mating connector for unmating. Protuberances (72) of the actuating sections 68 are received into recesses (40) of the strain relief section (36), for transmitting rearwardly directed unmating force from the latch members (60) to the strain relief section of the covers (16).

Connector assembly (10) secured to cable (12) having a pair of shield members (34,36) around the connector housing (42). Lower shield (34) has a cable crimping portion (90) having a pair of upstanding side arms (94,96) that are to be crimped around the cable to ground the shielding braid (24) thereof. Upper shield (36) includes a crimp support section (104) extending rearwardly along and against the cable so that the side arms (94,96) are crimped over the crimp support section (104), whereby the upper shield is integrated into the crimped connection (102).

Assembly (10) for terminating to cable (12) including a pair of covers (40,90) defining a cable exit (20). Channels of the covers at the cable exit have cable-clamping surfaces dimensioned to compress the cable outer jacket upon full assembly The covers include interlocking sections at the cable exit defined by latching arms (62,92) and latch-receiving recesses (72,94). Upon full assembly the latching arms latch in the recesses, and the now-compressed cable presses the latching arms to enhance maintenance of the latched condition.

An electrical connector (10) terminating a multi-wire cable (56) and adapted for mating contact with another such connector of identical construction. The connector comprises a plurality of hermaphroditic contact members (12) retained within a housing (14,16). The housing includes channels (52) for holding the wires (54) of the cable and the contact members further have insulation displacing contact portions (36) adapted to engage respective ones of the wires. The housing is formed of two parts with a latching mechanism (58,60, 62,64).

Stackable electrical connector

A connector assembly (10) including at least one audio jack (36,38,40) stacked in a housing (24) with an electrical connector (80). The connector assembly is arranged for surface mounting to a circuit board (12) which is orthogonal to a metal panel (14) having openings (16,18,20,22) which provide access to the audio jacks and to the connector of the connector assembly. A ground clip (62) captured between the audio jacks and the connector assembly housing engages ground terminals (50) of the audio jacks and includes a projecting spring arm (66) which engages the metal panel, thereby providing electrical grounding.

A mounting rack (10) for a plurality of electrical connectors (50) to define a subassembly (90) manipulatable as a unit for mass connector mounting to a circuit board (100) at an edge (102) thereof. A premolded mounting rack (10) includes slots (22) at each connector site (20) into which respective connectors (50) are insertable to become secured to the mounting rack, prior to mounting of the subassembly to the circuit board and subsequent electrical connection of contact sections (64,66,68) of each connector being connected to circuit termini of the board (100). Projections (32) from the mounting rack (10) include embossments (34) or fastening elements (150) adapted to enter or pass through mounting holes (110,164) of the board for securing the subassembly to the board. The mounting rack (200) may also be overmolded about intermediate portions of the connectors to define a subassembly.

Multiple discrete coax cables 1 comprising: corresponding signal wires 2 and corresponding ground wires 5 within corresponding sheaths 4, the sheaths 4 having external profiles 56 extending along the lengths of corresponding cables 1 constructed for passage through corresponding eyes 64 conforming to the profiles 56, the cables 1 are flexible independently, and wires 2, 5 extend without skew along the corresponding axes of the independently flexible cables 1 for connection to a corresponding housing block 16 of a connector assembly 6.

A wire organizer (16) comprises, signal wire receiving passages (22), fingers (19) receiving electrical contacts (9) of an electrical connector assembly (6), and each of the passages (22) that receives a signal wire (2) superposes the signal wire (2) over one of the contacts (9) for joined connection of the signal wire (2) to the contact (9).

A connector assembly (6) comprises, conductive signal contacts (9) and a ground bus (10), a separator (16) between first and second rows of the contacts (9), the contacts (9) and the ground bus (10) being supported against the separator (16), the separator (16) having fingers (19) between adjacent contacts (9) of each row, and the ground bus (10) and the contacts (9) being of greater height than the fingers (19) for ease in connection to wires (2, 5) of an electrical cable (1).

Electrical connector assembly

Cable connectors are provided which include an insulating housing block including at least first and second contact-receiving cavities and at least one transverse opening for communicating between these cavities. The connector also includes an electrical cable assembly having at least two insulated signal wires co-axially protected by a conductive shell and disposed in the first contact-receiving cavity. A reference contact is disposed in the second cable-receiving cavity and includes a contact finger frictionally contacting the conductive shell through the transverse opening between the cavities for providing a reference voltage to, for example, a pin field connector, or the like.

An electrical cable assembly comprises, an insulative housing block (8) having a contact receiving side (15), a series of wire receiving channels (11) in the housing block (8), electrical contacts (9) on the housing block (8) being intercepted by alternate channels (11), another row of electrical contacts (9) separate from the housing block (8) being held along the contact receiving side (15), and being intercepted by alternate channels (11), and a cut (20) in an electrical cable (2) to offset cable wires (4) aligned by the channels (11).
