The present disclosure may include, for example, a tunable capacitor having a decoder for generating a plurality of control signals, and an array of tunable switched capacitors comprising a plurality of fixed capacitors coupled to a plurality of switches. The plurality of switches can be controlled by the plurality of control signals to manage a tunable range of reactance of the array of tunable switched capacitors. Additionally, the array of tunable switched capacitors is adapted to have non-uniform quality (Q) factors. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

A matching system of a communication device that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a controller that executes instructions facilitating selection of a subset of usage scenarios according to a usage condition of a communication device. An impedance circuit is adjusted based on a subset of different tuning scenarios corresponding to the subset of usage scenarios to facilitate an impedance match to an antenna of the communication device. A group of operational parameters is obtained for each tuning scenario change between the subset of different tuning scenarios. Multiple operational parameters obtained at each of the subset of different tuning scenarios at different times are processed for each tuning scenario and a tuning scenario is selected based on a determination as to which of the processed operational parameters correlates with a predetermined performance goal. Method and apparatus for radio antenna frequency tuning

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, determining an operational criteria associated with a modulation type of a signal modulation. A single write command is generated for applying a group of tuning steps to a matching network of a mobile communication device. The group of tuning steps are determined according to the operational criteria associated with the modulation type of the signal modulation. The single write command is transmitted to a switch controller coupled to the matching network for adjusting settings of the group of switches according to the group of tuning steps to generate a desired tuning value without multiple write commands. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a communication device having a controller to provision a matching network that controls one or more operational characteristics of one of a receiver portion and a transmitter portion of the communication device according to a profile describing one or more characteristics of a communication system from which the communication device operates. Method and apparatus for managing operations of a communication device

A matching network of a communication device that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a controller that executes instructions facilitating an identifying a subset of usage scenarios based on a usage condition of the communication device and adjusting the matching network device based on a subset of different tuning scenarios corresponding to the subset of usage scenarios. A group of operational parameters is obtained via parametric measurements for each tuning scenario change between the tuning scenarios corresponding to each of the subset of usage scenarios. Multiple operational parameters are averaged corresponding to each of the tuning scenarios to identify an average operational parameter for each tuning scenario, and a tuning scenario is selected from among the subset of different tuning scenarios based on a determination as to which of the average operational parameters correlates with a desired performance goal. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, determining, by a controller of a mobile communication device, a phase shift criteria and an amplitude shift criteria associated with a modulation being implemented by the mobile communication device. The controller can determine a group of tuning steps that satisfies the phase and amplitude shift criteria and that provides a desired tuning step for a matching network of the mobile communication device. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a tuning system for a communication device having an antenna, where the tuning system includes at least one first tunable element connected with at least one radiating element of the antenna for tuning the antenna where the adjusting of the at least one first tunable element is based on at least one of a use case associated with the communication device and location information associated with the communication device, and a matching network having at least one second tunable element coupled at a feed point of the antenna, wherein the matching network receives control signals for adjusting the at least one second tunable element to tune the matching network.
