The present invention provides for a system and method for blocking leakage signals and uncoupling connections in a communication system. A leakage signal (LS) blocking splitter employs a high-pass filter which effectively blocks the lower frequency leakage signal. The high-pass filter (an LS filter) has a cut-off frequency selected to fall between the upper range of the leakage signal (which is approximately 4 KHz in the preferred embodiment) and the low-end frequency of a data signal. A detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to which each one of the leakage signal (LS) filters are coupled to. The detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to ensure that each LS blocking splitter is coupled to an in-service communication connection. If the communication connection becomes out-of-service, such as when a customer discontinues service with the service provider, the detect and terminate functions automatically uncouple the respective LS filter from the communication connections so that the LS filter cannot introduce undesirable harmonics into the communication system. In an alternative embodiment, the detect and terminate function may insert an impedance matching element in addition to uncoupling the LS filter.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for reducing the number of bit errors that occur in xDSL data transmissions as a result of baseband ringing. It has been determined that the number of bit errors that occur in xDSL data transmissions as a result of baseband ringing can be reduced by lowering the data transmission rate to a predetermined rate while baseband ringing is occurring. The apparatus of the present invention detects when baseband ringing is occurring over a communication system and causes the data communication equipment (DCE) device located at the central office and the DCE located at the customer premises to begin communicating at a lower, predetermined transmission data rate. When a determination is made by the apparatus that the baseband ringing is no longer present, the apparatus causes the DCE located at the central office and the DCE located at the customer premises to begin communicating at the original data transmission rate. This temporary rate reduction results in an increased operating margin during, and slightly beyond, the time interval in which baseband ringing is occurring.

A system and method for communication allows a V.90 modem located at a customer premises to appear as a &ldquo;central site&rdquo; modem to a V.90 &ldquo;end-point&rdquo; modem located remotely from the customer premises &ldquo;central site&rdquo; V.90 modem. The customer premises includes a communication device that provides a four wire digital connection to the customer premises V.90 modem co-located with the communication device at the customer premises. Because the V.90 modem located at the customer premises has a four wire digital connection to a public switched network, it appears to a remote &ldquo;end-point&rdquo; V.90 modem that the customer premises V.90 modem is a &ldquo;central site&rdquo; modem. In this manner, a higher data rate is achievable from a customer premises &ldquo;end-point&rdquo; modem to either a remote &ldquo;endpoint&rdquo; modem or a remote &ldquo;central site&rdquo; modem, than is achievable from the &ldquo;end-point&rdquo; modem to the customer premises &ldquo;central site&rdquo; modem. This results in an upstream data rate approaching 56Kb/s from the customer premises &ldquo;central site&rdquo; modem to the &ldquo;end-point&rdquo; modem.
