Sensors are disclosed that detect whether a cannula is properly inserted to its full depth in a subject's skin. The sensors may be used with a blood glucose monitor, or with a continuous insulin infusion pump, infusion set, or other system involving intermittent or continuous testing and/or drug delivery.

Cannula insertion detection

Provided is a flexible and conformal wearable, self-contained medical device. The medical device comprises an integral housing formed by a flexible upper portion and a flexible lower portion joined along their perimeters. The medical device is also provided in a plurality of shapes and configurations for increasing the flexibility and conformability of the housing. The components contained within the housing, such as a drug reservoir, printed circuit board, and power supply are preferably constructed from flexible materials and are formed, connected and positioned according to the configuration of the housing in a manner for enhancing flexibility of the housing. A thermal bubble micropump is provided for controlling flow of a drug from the flexible reservoir, that utilizes a thermal resistor provided locally to a thermal expansion fluid that causes a surrounding membrane to expand and displace a volume of drug to be provided to the user.

User-friendly attachment mechanisms for pen needles provide improved handling and ease of use, including locking installation and removal features and sensory feedback when a needle-bearing hub is seated on a pen.

Pen needle attachment mechanisms

Provided is an extended use self-contained, wearable medical device. The device is preferably configured with an infusion deployment mechanism for variably inserting and retracting an infusion needle to different depths, or completely retracting the infusion needle from the infusion site and then re-inserting the infusion needle after a predetermined period of time, throughout an infusion cycle for extending the viability of the infusion site. Another embodiment comprises dual needle deployment mechanisms which may also variably insert and retract the infusion needles. A flow sensor is preferably provided for detecting the stoppage of flow through the infusion cannula and signaling the needle deployment mechanism to attempt infusion at a different depth or to deploy a second infusion needle. A re-fillable reservoir assembly is preferably provided for supplying a drug over the extended use of the device. Another embodiment comprises a partially reusable and partially disposable medical device implementing the above features.

A method of constructing an infusion set, patch pump, or element thereof, comprising the steps of mixing at least two of a solvent, an anesthetic, and a lubricant, applying said mixture as a coating to at least one surface of an infusion set, patch pump, or element thereof, and substantially removing said solvent after coating to provide at least one of an anesthetic layer and a lubricant layer upon said infusion set, patch pump, or element thereof.

Improved systems and methods for medicine delivery, and in particular, improved insulin pen needles and related devices are provided. Smart injection devices record and transfer data including medicine level, delivered dose, dose confirmation, and dose time and date. Additional data captured may include glucose concentration, insulin level, carbohydrates ingested, stress level, exercise, blood pressure, and glucose high and low excursion events. Various means of data collection and analysis are provided and systems can identify and flag patients who require intervention. Smart sleeves and add sensing capability to standard insulin pens. Pen needles are provided with sensing capability to confirm and measure doses delivered by insulin pen. A two-part pen cap include a primary sleeve that connects to the insulin pen and an end cap that provides for capturing the time of dose delivery, and monitoring the hold time for a dose delivery after plunger movement.

Systems and methods for medicine delivery

A medicament delivery system is disclosed including disposable pen needles () each having a stainless steel needle or cannula () with a concealed or a very short non-injection end () that is not intended to pierce the septum () of the drug storage compartment () of a medication pen (), thus reducing the risk of needle stick injuries. Several types of non-metallic interfaces () serve as intermediaries between the pen needles () and a medication pen () and perform the septum-piercing function. These improve the flow of medicament to the needle or cannula () due to the larger lumen of the plastic interface () that directly feeds medicament to the needle or cannula (), allowing for even smaller gauge needles for improved patient comfort.

User-friendly attachment mechanisms for pen needles provide improved handling and ease of use, including locking installation and removal features and sensory feedback when a needle-bearing hub is seated on a pen. Embodiments include a needle-bearing hub includes a circumferentially oriented flexible tab that engages a radially inward rib on an outer cover to assist in attaching a pen device to the pen needle.

A pen needle is enclosed by an outer cover to facilitate installation of a needle bearing hub on a medication pen. The outer cover design reduces or eliminates the likelihood of user contact with the patient end needle or the non-patient end needle during installation and disposal, and provides an audible indication when the hub is fully installed on a medication pen.

An exemplary insulin infusion set that further provides one or more set elements including the hub, hub adhesive, fluid line tubeset, connectors, catheters and insertion needles which can be impregnated with, coated with, or otherwise configured to contain and administer an anesthetic at the insertion and set placement locations to minimize user discomfort and the risk of complications associated with the use of infusion sets. To do so, the system and method provides steps for mixing at a step () at least two of a solvent, an anesthetic, and a lubricant, applying the mixed compound as a coating to at least one surface of the infusion set, patch pump, or an element thereof at a step (), and then substantially removing the solvent after coating at a step () to provide at least one of an anesthetic layer and a lubricant layer upon the infusion set, patch pump, or an element thereof.
