An information processing system comprises one or more processing platforms and implements a centralized storage provisioning and management system and a plurality of service provider storage systems coupled to the centralized storage provisioning and management system. The centralized storage provisioning and management system is configured to control provisioning and management of the service provider storage systems utilizing information collected from the service provider storage systems. The service provider storage systems may comprise respective service provider data centers, and the centralized storage provisioning and management system may comprise an additional data center separate from the service provider data centers. The centralized storage provisioning and management system may comprise a centralized control path implemented apart from the service provider storage systems. The centralized control path is configured to interact with a plurality of localized control paths implemented in respective ones of the service provider storage systems.

Centralized storage provisioning and management across multiple service providers

An information processing system comprises a centralized database and at least one processing device implementing a selection algorithm for automated provisioning and management of a plurality of storage arrays based on information collected from the storage arrays and stored in the centralized database. The information stored in the centralized database may comprise at least one of storage utilization, performance, network bandwidth and end of service for each of the storage arrays. The selection algorithm is configured to determine optimal placement of data across the storage arrays based on the information stored in the centralized database. For example, the selection algorithm may be configured to determine one or more locations within the plurality of storage arrays to allocate as new storage responsive to a provisioning request.

Automated storage provisioning and management using a centralized database

One customer of the license clearinghouse may act as an intermediary and perform selected tasks on behalf of another customer. In particular, an intermediary customer can make rights inquiries that access the portion of the central repository that belongs to its client in order to determine rights available to the client. In one embodiment, the portion of the central repository that is accessed in response to a rights inquiry is determined by an IP address of the device being used to make the rights inquiry. This IP address is used to retrieve a record having a customer ID and a field that indicates whether the IP address corresponds to a rights intermediary. If this is the case, a keyword corresponding to the customer ID of the customer that is provided in the rights request by the rights intermediary is used to access the central repository.

Intermediated rights management

A small program in a browser that a knowledge worker uses to search for content can be activated when the worker wants to determine available rights for a publication that has been found. When activated, the program accesses a rights advisor website that converts the URL of the publication in the browser to standard publication identifiers. The publication identifiers are then used to access a rights database and extract all rights associated with the publication. Based on selected characteristics of the worker and the organization to which the worker belongs, the rights are filtered and placed into a decision tree. The tree is then traversed from its lowest level upward to locate the most favorable rights and the resulting rights are presented to the worker via the browser.
