A combustor dome may be formed by way of additive layer manufacturing. The combustor dome may further include a raised outer surface and a recessed outer surface on a hot side of the combustor dome. The recessed outer surfaces may be closer to the cold side than the raised outer surfaces. The combustor dome may include a shadow surface defined between the raised outer surface and recessed outer surface. The shadow surface may define a corresponding cooling outlet in fluid communication with an internal cooling channel defined inside of the combustor dome. The cooling outlet may release air from the internal cooling channel to the hot axial side of the combustor dome.

Combustor dome via additive layer manufacturing

A combustion section of a gas turbine engine may include a cassette configured to couple to an annular combustor dome arranged around a flow path for the gas turbine engine. The annular combustor dome may include a dome wall comprising a plurality of inlets configured to receive compressed air for a combustion chamber located downstream, relative to the flow path, from the annular combustor dome. The cassette may include a combustor wall extended away from the dome wall in a downstream direction. The cassette may further include a cowl integral to the combustor wall. At least a portion of the cowl may extend away from the dome wall in an upstream direction relative to the flow path. The cowl may receive compressed air from a diffusor and guide the compressed air to a space upstream from the inlets, relative to the flow path.

An afterburner for use with a gas turbine engine includes a plurality of vanes distributed downstream of a turbine of the gas turbine engine. The vanes can include one or more exit apertures through which hot combustion flow from a pilot can be injected. The exit apertures can be protrusions or slots in some forms. In some embodiments, cooling passages are arranged around the exit apertures. An upstream vane portion can be positioned to inject fuel to be combusted via interaction with hot flow that is discharged through the exit apertures.

Gas turbine engine afterburner

A gas turbine engine includes a combustion system. The combustion system may include a combustor positioned in a chamber created by an outer wall. A compressor, such as a centrifugal compressor may provide a flow of compressed air into the chamber along an inner surface of the outer wall since an inlet for the flow of compressed air is outboard of the combustor. The pressurized flow of air may be redirected by a cowl included in the chamber. The cowl may include a collar defining a notch in the cowl. The collar may redirect the flow of pressurized air so as to minimize a high velocity component of the flow of pressurized air flowing radially toward a central axis of the engine prior to entering a head of a fuel nozzle included in the combustion system.

An afterburner is disclosed for use with a gas turbine engine and, in one form, is structured to receive a bypass air. The afterburner can be situated in a bypass duct and can be a toroidal combustor or a can combustor. In one embodiment, the afterburner includes a combustor arranged to receive bypass air and a plurality of vanes distributed downstream of a turbine of the gas turbine engine. The vanes can include one or more exit apertures through which hot combustion flow from the afterburner combustor can be injected. The exit apertures can be protrusions or slots in some forms. In one embodiment, a cooling passage is arranged around the exit apertures. An upstream vane portion can be positioned to inject fuel to be combusted via interaction with hot flow that is discharged through the exit apertures.

A combustion system including a plurality of axially staged tubular premixers to control emissions and minimize combustion noise. The combustion system includes a radial inflow premixer that delivers the combustion mixture across a contoured dome into the combustion chamber. The axially staged premixers having a twist mixing apparatus to rotate the fluid flow and cause improved mixing without causing flow recirculation that could lead to pre-ignition or flashback.

Dry low combustion system with means for eliminating combustion noise

An apparatus for mixing fuel with oxidizing agent is disclosed comprising an outer body and an inner body. The outer body has an interior surface extending between an inlet end toward an outlet end. The interior surface includes a first plurality of openings. The inner body has an exterior surface extending between the first end and the second end of the inner body. The exterior surface of the inner body includes a second plurality of openings. At least a portion of the exterior surface of the inner body is positioned within the outer body to define a mixing channel between the exterior surface of the inner body and the interior surface of the outer body. In one form the first and second plurality of openings substantially longitudinally span at least one of the outer body and the inner body. In another form the first and second plurality of openings are substantially radially oriented. In yet another form the first and second plurality of openings are offset from one another.

Apparatus for premixing in a gas turbine engine

A sports helmet with portable audio sound producing capabilities is disclosed for use on a wearer's head during physical exercise or sports activities at which head injuries are to be protected against. There is a protective shell head covering composed of impact absorbing material which has downwardly facing rim portions terminating above the wearer's ear canals. Straps are provided for removably fastening the protective shell on a wearer's head. A sound speaker is attached at the downwardly facing rim portions above the wearer's ear canal. The speaker is spaced away from the ears so that the ear canals are not shielded. The speaker is aimed so that sound emitted therefrom is primarily directed downwardly past the wearer's ear canal. Other sounds, warnings, or communications from the surroundings can also be heard. A portable sound signal producing device communicates signals to the speaker for causing desirable sounds to be emitted from the speakers during physical exercise or sports activity. Two speakers may be similarly provided, one on each side, for stereo sound.

Protective sports helmet with speakers, helmet retrofit kit and method

A cautery cleaning device including a thumb and fingertip manipulated support member with rubber-like properties through which a cautery blade is guided and in which scraping edges are supported and held in contact with the blade. The support member is conformed to fit onto the cautery pencil end adjacent the blade and is removably tethered thereto.
