A controller for controlling energy consumption in a home includes a constraints engine to define variables for multiple appliances in the home corresponding to various home modes and persona of an occupant of the home. A modeling engine models multiple paths of energy utilization of the multiple appliances to place the home into a desired state from a current context. An optimal scheduler receives the multiple paths of energy utilization and generates a schedule as a function of the multiple paths and a selected persona to place the home in a desired state.

Systems and methods for managing a programmable thermostat are described herein. One or more system embodiments include a programmable thermostat having a first management profile; a data acquisition subsystem; and a data analysis subsystem. A system for disaggregating a gross energy measurement into individual component energy consumption. A collection of components may be situated in a facility. A sensor may obtain electrical signals from one or more power input lines which convey power to the facility for the components. The signals may indicate the total energy consumption by the collection of components. Approaches and/or mechanisms may be used to disaggregate the indication of total energy consumption into indications of individual energy consumption by the components without the need for separately determining the individual energy consumption with additional measurements or instrumentation. Also, approaches and/or mechanisms may be used for integrating a known load activity with whole facility energy consumption for enhancing the component disaggregation. Indications of individual energy consumption permit a reasonable evaluation of components from efficiency, conservation and/or other perspectives.

Methods and systems for defining, detecting, analyzing, indexing, and retrieving events using video image processing techniques are described herein. An illustrative method of detecting and analyzing events occurring within a region of interest of a video monitoring system may include the steps of extracting information regarding one or more objects located within a region of interest, analyzing the extracted information to detect the occurrence of one or more events within the region of interest, matching at least one of the detected events with a corresponding user-specified event, and performing an action response upon the detection of such an event. In certain embodiments, the detected events may be defined as a set of semantic parameters relating to the object's state and/or physical features, which can be compared against a corresponding set of semantic parameters programmed within a video image-processing appliance manager.

Methods for defining, detecting, analyzing, indexing and retrieving events using video image processing

Methods and systems for packaging video sequences based on user-specified events are described herein. An illustrative method of event-packaging a video sequence may include the steps of acquiring a video stream containing an event of interest, extracting various event information from the video stream and storing one or more event parameters within an event database, extracting a video clip from the video stream containing the event of interest, associating metadata representing the event parameters to the video clip, and exporting the video clip containing the event of interest and associated metadata to an external agent. In certain embodiments, a video image-processing appliance manager and/or one or more appliance modules can be provided to automatically extract event information from the acquired video stream, and to manage the indexing and storage of event parameters within the event database. A graphical user interface may also be provided to permit the event information extracted from the video stream to be compared against a set of user-specified event parameters.

A combination of inter-frame and intra-frame and sequential classification methods provide for robust and flexible object classification. Intra-frame classification determines the object type based on features extracted from a single image. Inter-frame classification determines object types based on the features extracted from several sequential frames. A sequential classification combines the results of the inter- and intra-frame classifications over a sequence of images.

Systems and methods for monitoring buildings to detect harmful chemical or biological agents. Self-propelled harmful agent detectors are provided that can propel themselves using motors and self-contained power sources. On-board harmful agent sensors can detect the presence of harmful agents and transmit information for reception by a receiving unit. Some sensors can identify the type of agent and transmit the agent type. Some detectors can measure the intensity or concentration of the harmful agent presence and transmit that intensity. Some systems include locating devices for determining positions of the roaming detectors, as well as mapping software to map the location of the individual moving detectors. Systems may include software for plotting the relative concentrations of agents detected to locate the origination of the source within the building. The moving detectors can have motors coupled to wheels, tracks, capstans, pulleys and winches to move the devices along floors, air ducts, and suspended or hanging wires.
