A dual-BOP or multi-BOP self-standing riser configuration is disclosed, including at least a riser or another similarly fixed tubular structure disposed in communication with an associated drilling vessel and a subsurface well. The system supplements the traditional mud-line level BOP with one or more additional near-surface BOPs, which are tensioned using an adjustable buoyancy chamber rather than by means of a vessel-born tensioning device.

Safety system for deep water drilling units using a dual blow out preventer system

A sea vessel exploration and production system is provided, wherein the system includes a drilling station formed from at least one section of a first sea vessel hull; and a docking station, which is also formed from at least one section of a second sea vessel hull. A mooring system suitable for connecting the drilling station to the docking station is also provided. Means for anchoring the vessels to the seafloor, and for attaching them to turret buoys, are also considered. Various exploration and production packages, as well as equipment required to deploy and control a self-standing riser system in either deep or shallow waters, are also described.

Docking and drilling stations for running self-standing risers and conducting drilling, production and storage operations

A water-borne vessel for deploying a self-standing riser system is provided, wherein the vessel hull is configured to receive, transfer and deploy components of a self-standing riser system. The vessel hull includes at least a landing platform, a component transfer means, and a deployment platform suitable for deploying the riser components into associated surrounding waters. Various means of assisting the process whereby self-standing riser components are loaded onto the vessel and stored; transferred from receiving to deployment platforms; and deployed from the vessel into surrounding waters are also considered.

Self-standing riser and buoyancy device deployment and positioning system

A system for and method of limiting and controlling the unintended subsurface release of an exploration or production riser system is provided including one or more means for anchoring the riser or casing stack at one or more pre-determined points upon the length of the riser, and/or on the housing of an associated buoyancy chamber or the like, and/or on a particular portion of the riser as dictated by the operational environment, and/or on an anchor portion secured in the sea floor; and a network of restraining members disposed on the anchoring means. A lower anchoring portion includes one or more anchors disposed in communication with a wellhead, or with the sea floor or below the sea floor mud line, or with a well casing portion. A network of restraining members forms an essentially continuous connection from the buoyancy member portion to said bottom anchor portion. In a particular, though, non-limiting embodiment of the invention, a means for anchoring the system using pairs of anchors disposed at one or more predetermined points along the riser portion of the system is provided. Also disclosed is a variety of means and devices by which a surface vessel or a rig, etc., servicing a subsea well equipped with the present system may absorb or deflect impact forces originating from portions of the system that unexpectedly break free and rush upwards toward the surface vessel or rig.

System for and method of restraining a subsurface exploration and production system

The instant disclosure relates to a system and method of constructing drilling and production platforms that are particularly useful in remote, inaccessible and/or environmentally sensitive operating environments. According to one aspect of the invention, an arctic drilling platform is provided wherein various methods and means of interlocking neighboring platform modules are provided. Methods and means for sealing the intersections formed between a plurality of interlocked platform modules are also disclosed. According to further aspects of the invention, improved platform floor plans are provided, and various wellhead cellar layouts and sealing means are also described. Methods and means of enhancing the usefulness of modular storage platforms are disclosed, and a number of support post installation and removal techniques are also provided. Also taught are a variety of methods of adjusting the height and level of an assembled drilling platform, and methods and means of adding extension members useful for extending the length of a support post are also described.

Arctic platform

A system and method of establishing an offshore exploration and production system is disclosed, in which a well casing is disposed in communication with an adjustable buoyancy chamber and a well hole bored into the floor of a body of water. A lower connecting member joins the well casing and the chamber, and an upper connecting member joins, the adjustable buoyancy chamber and a well terminal member. The chamber's adjustable buoyancy enables an operator to vary the height or depth of the well terminal member, and to vary the vertical tension imparted to drilling and production strings throughout exploration and production operations. Also disclosed is a system and method of adjusting the height or depth of a wellhead while associated vertical and lateral forces remain approximately constant. A variety of well isolation members, lateral stabilizers and anchoring means, as well as several methods of practicing the invention, are also disclosed.

System and method of installing and maintaining an offshore exploration and production system having an adjustable buoyancy chamber

A pipeline installation and maintenance method and system is disclosed in which a number of interconnectible platform modules are assembled into drilling platforms from which a segmented pipeline route is flexibly installed. Using modified push/pull rigs to carry out a transverse drilling process established between platforms, successive portions of the pipeline are installed such that equipment used to create completed segments is moved down line and re-used in subsequent drilling and installation stages. Further segments of the line are similarly constructed, using one or more of the modified directional drilling techniques and transverse reaming processes disclosed herein. Ultimately, a long series of adjacent pipeline segments are installed along a desired pipeline route, while only minimal and temporary disturbance is caused to associated ground surfaces during installation and maintenance operations.

Method and system for installing and maintaining a pipeline while minimizing associated ground disturbance

A system for drilling wells includes a plurality of platform modules, which are interconnected to one another on site to form a unitary platform structure. The interconnected platform modules are elevated above a surface on plurality of legs coupled to at least some of the platform modules. The elevated interconnected platform modules support drilling and auxiliary equipment. The system is well adapted for use in arctic, inaccessible, shallow water or environmentally sensitive locations.

Platform for drilling oil and gas wells in arctic, inaccessible, or environmentally sensitive locations

A method of exploring for hydrocarbons is disclosed wherein core is obtained over substantially the entire length of a well and substantially all lithologies represented within the core are analyzed at a core analysis facility located adjacent the well. A measurement of a plurality of physical properties of the core are made promptly after the core is removed from the well. Thereafter, from the measurement of these physical properties, a depth correlated record is generated, and is used (a) to adjust the drilling plan for that well while it is being drilled, (b) used as inputs into other exploration processes, such as seismic surveys, magnetic surveys and gravity surveys, or (c) used for correlation with other depth correlated records obtained from other wells.

Method of exploration for hydrocarbons

A method and related apparatus are disclosed for drilling a well including providing drilling data, which can include drilling rig parameters, geological parameters, wellbore parameters, and drillstring parameters, on a real time basis from at least one well into a database associated with a programmable digital computer. The drilling data can be provided via telephone lines, hard wire connections, radio transmissions, microwave transmissions or fiber optical transmissions into the database. Associated with the database is a monitoring facility where drilling activities are monitored and, if desired, future drilling actions are simulated utilizing the drilling data within the database.

Method of drilling a well utilizing predictive simulation with real time

A system for controlling the vertical movement of a drillstring and which is removably interconnected with a conventional drill rig. The system includes at least one fluidic cylinder and piston assembly removably connected at an upper end to a support, such as the rig's traveling block assembly, and at a lower end to the drillstring. A pump is operatively connected to the cylinder and piston assembly and a control valve device is provided to control the flow of the fluid to and from the cylinder and piston assembly. A computing device is in operative communication with a data measurement system and the control valve device and is used to automatically control the movement of the drillstring in response to data, such as WOB, received from the data measurement system.

System to control the vertical movement of a drillstring

An apparatus is described whereby the side force on a drill bit can be measured during drilling operations and transmitted to the surface where it can be used in predicting trajectory of the hole and taking corrective action in the drilling operation. A downhole assembly using a downhole motor is modified to include means to detect the side thrust or force on a bit driven by the motor and the force on the deflection means of the downhole motor. These measured forces are transmitted to the surface of the earth during drilling operations and are used in evaluating and controlling drilling operations. Means are also provided to measure magnitude of the force on a downhole stabilizer.
