A mobile intercom device is described that is configured to facilitate the assignment and reassignment of functions during use. A plurality of button pairs, each including a talk button and a listen button, and a display screen are provided on the mobile intercom device. An electronic processor of the mobile intercom device is configured to display a list of alphanumeric identifiers on the display screen, each alphanumeric identifier in the list of alphanumeric identifiers corresponding to a different one of a plurality of channels on the intercom system. A selection of a first alphanumeric identifier from the list is received and a channel on the intercom system corresponding to the first alphanumeric identifier is assigned to a first button pair of the plurality of button pairs.

Methods and systems are presented for providing audio routing and roaming functionality for a wireless intercom system including a plurality of wireless access points. A first wireless access point is configured to receive a communication from a first wireless intercom device and identify a home access point for the first wireless intercom device. The first wireless access point transmits audio data from the first wireless intercom device directly to the intercom system in response to a determination that the first wireless access point is the home access point for the first wireless device. The audio data from the first wireless intercom device is transmitted to the intercom system through a second wireless access point in response to a determination that the second wireless access point is the home access point for the first wireless intercom device.

Systems and methods are provided for operating an intercom system using a wireless access point. A codec is selected () from a plurality of available codecs. In some implementations, the available codecs present a tradeoff between audio quality and intercom device capacity. The access point operates () using the selected codec and, in response to detecting a new intercom device connecting to the intercom system () through the access point, the access point transmits a signal to the new intercom device identifying the selected codec. In response to a determination that the new intercom device does not have the selected codec stored in its memory, the access point automatically uploads () the codec to the new intercom device and transmits communications with the intercom device&#x2014;including, for example, audio stream data&#x2014;using the selected codec.

To transmit encoded information such as for example voice messages between remote transceivers, a transmitter digitizes and encodes an audio signal and then transmits the resulting digital coded signal to the receiver. The receiver decodes the signal and converts it back to an audio signal. The received encoded digital signal is used to reset the timing clock in the receiver so that the timing is synchronized in the receiver and transmitter by the transmitted encoded information. The encoder transmits digital information to a shift register. Encoding switches select certain stages of the shift register and the transmitter transmits the exclusive-OR of the digitized message and the output of the selected stages. This signal is also the input to the shift register. The information transmitted to the receiver is a scrambled digital signal. In the receiver, the coded information synchronizes a clock for the shift register from the encoded digital signal that it receives and selects the stages of the shift register that unscramble the coded information for conversion to an audio signal suitable for the speaker.
