A mobile station communicates with both a cellular network, by which it is assigned a mobile identification number, and to a cordless cellular base station utilizing the same cellular frequency range and communications protocol. The cordless cellular base station is preferably connected to a public switched telephone network and is assigned a landline number. The cordless cellular base station acts as a conduit between the mobile station and the public switched telephone network. When the mobile station comes within range of a cordless cellular base station, it deregisters automatically from the cellular network and register with the cordless cellular base station. Once the mobile station is communicating with the cordless cellular base station, the cordless cellular base station communicates with the cellular network to instruct the cellular network to route all calls for mobile identification number to the cordless cellular base station's landline number. In addition, all calls placed on the mobile station are sent through the cordless cellular base station to the public switched telephone network. When the mobile station severs contact with the cordless cellular base station, the mobile station registers with the regional cellular base station of the regional cellular network. The cordless cellular base station then sends a network forwarding cancellation message to the cellular network to cancel the forwarding of calls for the mobile station's identification number. Once the mobile station is registered with the regional cell, calls to the mobile stations identification number are directly routed by the cellular network to the mobile station.

A remote unit has the ability to switch automatically from a public network to a non-public network comprising of private and residential base stations. In the preferred embodiment, the public network is characterized by cells with each cell having a unique identification signal. Initially, a first switchover from a public network to a non-public network requires the user to manually cause the switchover. The remote unit stores the first identification signal transmitted by the base station from which the remote unit traversed into the region covered by the non-public base station. In the present invention a wireless communication system is disclosed. A base unit communicates with a remote unit. The system comprises means for transmitting, using CDMA, between the base unit and the remote unit, in one of a plurality of frequencies channels selected. In one period of time, the base unit transmits and in another period of time, different from the one period, the remote unit transmits. Further, the system comprises means for changing the one frequency channel selected to another frequency channel, different from the one frequency channel, in response to interference in the one frequency channel. A method of establishing a wireless communication link between a base unit and a remote unit is disclosed. The remote unit receives the first control signal in the third time period. The remote unit decodes the first control signal. Thereafter, communication in the selected frequency channel is accomplished between the base unit and the remote unit by the base unit transmitting an encoded data signal, encoded by the second code, in a fourth selected time period different from the first, second and third selected time periods, and by the remote unit transmitting an encoded data signal, encoded by the second code, in a fifth selected time period, which is different from the first, second, third and fourth time periods.

In the present invention a method of re-establishing a wireless communication after a communication break is disclosed. Prior to the communication break, a base unit transmits to a remote unit a table of channels of communication to be used. The base unit also transmits a clock signal value to the remote unit. After a communication break, the remote unit continues to count the clock signals generated from a clock signal source internal thereto. The remote unit applies a function to the value of the clock signal to obtain an entry in the table. The channel of communication associated with the entry in the table is selected by the remote unit. The base unit continues to count the clock signals generated internal thereto. The base unit applies the same function as the function used by the remote unit to the value of the clock signal to obtain an entry in the table. The base unit selects the channel of communication associated with the entry in the table.
