A thermal distortion estimation system for delivering thermal time varying distortion of various spacecraft antenna is provided which includes a measurement signal outage indicator and a storage device containing time varying distortion data. A signal is generated indicating an outage for the system received by the spacecraft and then a generated time varying distortion of the system from a previous measurement history to predict the error resulting from the thermal distortion is employed to estimate the error.

Antenna distortion estimation and compensation

A momentum wheel configuration that may be used on a spacecraft having a momentum bias that prevents zero wheel speeds. The momentum wheel configuration comprises three or more momentum wheels. The momentum wheels are oriented such that their wheel axes are not parallel to each other. The momentum wheels are oriented such that their axial momentum vectors are not coplanar. None of the momentum wheels have their wheel axis parallel to the momentum bias direction of the spacecraft. No two of the momentum wheels are oriented such that their axial momentum vectors are coplanar with the momentum bias direction of the spacecraft.

A system and method for RF autotracking multiple antennas (preferably located on a spacecraft) to compensate for disturbances experienced by the antennas. The system and method estimate high frequency errors associated with all of the antennas. The high frequency errors may be estimated using a currently selected antenna and a high-pass filter. The high frequency errors may be estimated using a sensor mounted on the spacecraft, such as a gyro or star tracker, or may be estimated using information, such as planned thruster firings, for example, from a spacecraft attitude control system. Alternatively, the high frequency information may be estimated using any combination of data from these sources. Low frequency errors are estimated using measurements from each selected antenna. The algorithm implemented in the present invention explicitly accounts for the frequency content of each disturbance source. The present invention only requires sampling from one antenna at any one time, reducing the necessary hardware to only one RF receiver.

Single-receiver multiple-antenna RF autotrack control

Systems and methods that limit the effects of actuator saturation to certain body axes of a spacecraft. A plurality of actuators, or momentum wheels, disposed on the spacecraft are oriented non-parallel to x, y, and z axes of the spacecraft. The plurality of actuators each produce torque that is applied to the spacecraft. Outputs of the plurality of actuators or momentum wheels are processed to control the respective actuators or momentum wheels to manage actuator saturation so that saturation does not produce attitude errors about one or more predetermined axes of the spacecraft.

System and method for limiting the effects of actuator saturation to certain body axes of a spacecraft

A controller and control method that perform satellite orbit-keeping maneuvers and proportionally scale orbit-keeping pulses to automatically minimize disturbance torques on-board a satellite. The controller and control method may also be used to remove residual momentum stored in spinning momentum wheels.

Controller and control method for satellite orbit-keeping maneuvers

A spacecraft orbit control system and method that provides orbit control of a spacecraft. The system comprises the spacecraft, one or more electric and/or chemical thrusters disposed on the spacecraft, and a control processor having control outputs coupled to the plurality of thrusters. An orbit control algorithm is implemented that determines the current orbit of the spacecraft, determines whether or not to perform stationkeeping, determines desired changes in certain orbit parameters if stationkeeping is to be performed, determines thruster firings that accomplish the desired orbit parameter changes, and fires the thrusters to perform spacecraft stationkeeping and provide spacecraft longitude control. The present invention may be used with any type of orbit determination procedure (such as GPS or ranging, with or without orbit propagation) and any type of stationkeeping algorithm that calculates thruster firings from desired orbit-parameter corrections.

Closed-loop spacecraft orbit control

A spacecraft having a body, one or more appendages coupled thereto, and a controller that implements methods that rotate the one or more flexible appendages to point it (them) towards the Sun to reduce spacecraft attitude pointing disturbances and improves spacecraft attitude pointing. The steps of the one or more appendages are timed to deadbeat the disturbance imparted to the spacecraft body. Timing of the appendage steps may be such that the periodic disturbances are phased to substantially cancel each other, or phased to decrease the magnitude of the net disturbance. The present invention also cancels solar array slew disturbances. The present invention cancels predictable disturbance torques before they produce a pointing error, improving the spacecraft pointing performance. The present invention predicts a disturbance torque exerted on the body due to the controller moving the one or more appendages, calculates a feedforward torque necessary for the controller to cancel the disturbance torque and includes the feedforward torque in the calculation of the total control torque applied to the body.

Spacecraft and appendage stepping methods that improve spacecraft attitude pointing and cancel solar array slew disturbances

An onboard attitude control system is constructed to utilize a four reaction wheel system having a reference axis, wherein at least three of the reaction wheel spin axes are oriented obliquely to the reference axis. Current attitude is estimated based on uploaded orbital data, onboard sensed earth and sun position data, and attitude data sensed by a three axes gyroscope system. Current attitude is compared to mission attitude to calculate an error which is transformed to a trihedral axes adjustment command to actuate the reaction wheel system.

The wheel speed control means monitors the wheel speeds and controls wheel speed nullspace components to keep the wheel speeds as small as possible.

A practical stationkeeping method and apparatus wherein an electric propulsion system on a satellite is used to correct north-south drift and the majority of east-west drift which is caused by orbital eccentricity growth. A chemical propulsion system on the satellite is used to correct the remainder of east-west drift due to the growth of orbital semimajor axis. The method and apparatus eliminate the need for additional electric thruster burns in case of an electric thruster failure and therefore eliminates associated power and mass penalties.
