Embodiments described herein generally relate to an apparatus and methods for preventing the recontamination of a pathogen-reduced fluid by pathogens trapped in one or more ports of an inactivation fluid container. Through the use of a slidable clamp positioned in an area of the container immediately adjacent to a port to be isolated, the port may be sealed to prevent any liquid product from entering the port and associated tubing when liquid product is added to the container. The slidable clamp includes a slot, in which the distal end of the slot has a larger width than the proximal end of the slot. The width of the slot at the narrowest, most proximal portion allows for a fluid-tight seal to be created when the slidable clamp is slid into the closed position with respect to the port to be isolated.

Blood from a patient is treated extracorporeally by any selected one of a plurality of predetermined treatments. Each of the treatments involves the flow of blood from the patient into a primary chamber of a filtration unit, past a semipermeable membrane located in the filtration unit which separates the primary chamber from a secondary chamber of the filtration unit, out the filtration unit and back to the patient. A replacement fluid is selectively and controllably added to the blood, as required for the selected treatment. A secondary fluid is controllably and selectively introduced into the secondary chamber of the filtration unit for controllably collecting material passing across the semipermeable membrane from the blood or for supplying material to pass across the semipermeable membrane into the blood as required for the selected treatment. Materials are removed from the secondary chamber and collected in accordance with the selected treatment. Upon selection of one of the plurality of extracorporeal blood treatments available, the rates of blood flow, fluid flow and fluid collection during the extracorporeal treatment are automatically determined, established and monitored in accordance with the selected treatment. An apparatus which automatically performs and monitors the selected treatment is also described.

Technique for extracorporeal treatment of blood

Blood leaks into the secondary chamber are automatically detected and the rates of blood and fluid flow automatically adjusted in response thereto. An apparatus which automatically performs and monitors the selected treatment is also described.

A combination pressure pod and access site apparatus is suitable for use in a medical tubing set. The combination pressure pod and access site comprises a pressure sensing chamber and a measured fluid chamber separated by a pressure transmissive diaphragm. An access site having a needle or needle-less septum is in fluid communication with the measured fluid chamber and permits and withdrawing fluids from, the measured fluid chamber through the access site. One or more of the combination pressure sites and access sites may be provided in a simplified blood tubing set for an extracorporeal blood treatment apparatus, such as a hemodialysis apparatus.

Thereafter, the rates of blood flow, fluid flow and fluid collection during the extracorporeal treatment are automatically determined, established and monitored in accordance with the selected treatment. An apparatus which automatically performs and monitors the selected treatment is also described.

Retention device for extracorporeal treatment apparatus

An integrated blood treatment fluid module is provided having particular multi-function application in the treatment of renal failure. The module comprises a support member, a blood treatment device mounted to the support member, and multiple fluid circuits, wherein a plurality of the fluid circuits are interconnected to the support member and at least one of the fluid circuits is fluidly connected to the blood treatment device. At least two of the fluid circuits are interconnected with the support member so as to have a portion of each disposed in a U-shape, each U-shape portion extending in a different direction, for selective positioning about a corresponding peristaltic pump of a blood treatment apparatus. For renal treatment applications, the blood conditioning device may be a hemofiltration device, hemodialysis device or high-flux dialyzer. In such applications, a blood supply circuit is fluidly connected to a blood input port of the blood treatment device, a blood return circuit is fluidly connected to a blood output port of the blood treatment device, and a waste fluid circuit is fluidly connected to a waste output port of the blood treatment device. A treatment fluid circuit is also fluidly connected to a treatment fluid input port of the blood treatment device. A replacement fluid circuit can be fluidly connected with one of either the blood supply circuit or blood return circuit, and an anticoagulant fluid circuit can be fluidly interconnected to the blood supply circuit.

Integrated blood treatment fluid module

Inclusions in a liquid flow, such as air bubbles in a blood flow, are detected by transmitting a signal through the fluid and receiving and interpreting the received signal based on the expected degree of attenuation for the liquid and the inclusions. The amplitude of the transmitted signal is automatically adjusted to maintain a constant average amplitude of the detected signal, thus compensating for changes in the detection environment. The average amplitude of the transmitted signal is controlled by integrating the received signal using an integrator with a time constant longer than the time constant of the expected inclusion signals, and comparing the integrated signal to a constant reference level. The presence of microbubbles is detected and a signal comprising a string of high frequency pulses is generated while the microbubbles are present. By counting the pulses, in conjunction with knowledge about the flow of liquid and the anticipated size of the microbubbles, an estimate of the total amount of air infused into the patient within a given time period is calculated. A tubing holder for retaining a flexible tube in an inclusion detector has tubing retention grooves formed into tubing engagement faces, the tubing engagement faces being spaced closer together than the tube diameter. The tube is inserted into the tubing holder by compressing and deforming it against the tubing engagement faces, until it reaches the tubing retaining grooves.

Method and apparatus for ultrasonic detection of air bubbles

A fluid flow chamber cassette that can be mounted with either its front wall or rear wall against a supporting machine and has a flexible tube that extends from a sidewall and forms a loop that is symetrical about a loop axis that is transverse to the side wall so that the loop will be acted upon by a pump roller on the machine both when the front wall is against the machine and when the rear wall is against the machine. Also disclosed is automatically fixing the initial liquid levels and amounts of air in venous and arterial chambers of fluid flow transfer device apparatus by having the arterial chamber inlet enter the arterial chamber at a position higher than the arterial chamber outlet, having the venous chamber inlet enter the venous chamber at a position higher than the venous chamber outlet, and priming the apparatus by causing reverse flow, so that the liquid rises in the venous and arterial chambers to the level of the entrances of the inlets. Also disclosed is sensing pressure of fluid in a fluid flow chamber by placing an impermeable flexible diaphragm over a hole in a rigid wall of the fluid flow chamber, providing a second chamber on the other side of the diaphragm, and sensing the pressure in the second chamber.

Apparatus for use with fluid flow transfer device

A fluid flow chamber cassette that can be mounted with either its front wall or rear wall against a supporting machine and has a flexible tube that extends from a sidewall and forms a loop that is symmetrical about a loop axis that is transverse to the side wall so that the loop will be acted upon by a pump roller on the machine both when the front wall is against the machine and when the rear wall is against the machine.
