Device for producing a vacuum using the Venturi effect are disclosed that have a housing defining a suction chamber, defining a motive passageway includes a tapering portion most proximate the suction chamber that convergingly tapers from a motive entrance to a motive exit into the suction chamber, the motive exit being in fluid communication with the suction chamber, and defining a discharge passageway having a discharge entrance in fluid communication with the suction chamber and divergingly tapering as it extends away from the suction chamber, and having a solid fletch centered within the tapering portion. The device can include a fletch-partition disposed in the motive passageway and dividing the motive passageway into two flow paths along opposing sides of the partition. The solid fletch divergingly tapers toward the suction chamber as it extends from the partition, thereby providing a circumferentially continuous flow of fluid around the fletch.

Devices for producing vacuum using the Venturi effect have a housing that defines a suction chamber, a motive passageway converging toward the suction chamber, a discharge passageway diverging away from the suction chamber, and a suction passageway having a first port in fluid communication with the suction chamber. Within the suction chamber, a motive exit of the motive passageway is spaced apart a distance from a discharge entrance of the discharge passageway to define a Venturi gap. A fletch that has a first hollow body section that terminates at or proximate a motive exit and a second hollow body section that terminates with a fletch entrance in fluid communication with the suction passageway upstream of the first port is present in the motive passageway. During operation, fluid flow through the motive passageway draws fluid flow through the first port into the suction chamber and through the fletch.

A piston for an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston includes a body having a cylindrical outer surface with a ring belt region including an annular uppermost ring groove and a lower ring groove extending into the outer surface. A top land extends from the uppermost ring groove to an upper combustion surface. The body has a pair of pin bosses with pin bores aligned with one another along a pin bore axis. A first piston ring is disposed in the uppermost ring groove and a second piston ring is disposed in the lower ring groove. The body has an annular sealed cooling gallery with a cooling medium contained therein. The sealed cooling gallery is configured in substantial radial alignment between the first and second piston rings to provide optimal cooling to the ring belt region, top land and upper combustion surface.

A Venturi device has a body defining a motive section and a discharge section converging toward and spaced a distance apart to define a Venturi gap, defining a first suction port and a second suction port each in fluid communication with the Venturi gap, and defining a chamber having an outlet end of the motive section and an inlet end of the discharge section dividing the chamber into a first portion and a second portion in fluid communication with one another above and below the inlet and outlet ends and through the Venturi gap. The first and second portions both have a plurality of spaced apart fingers protruding radially and axially from an inner wall thereof. A suction housing is sealingly connected to the chamber and collectively defines a check valve with the body, and a cap is sealing connected to close another end of the chamber.

Start-stop engine systems for a turbocharged engine have a bypass with fluid flow from upstream of the compressor or downstream of the compressor to a position between the throttle and the engine, or from between the compressor and throttle to a position upstream of the compressor with a Venturi device in the bypass. A device requiring vacuum is in fluid communication with a suction port of the Venturi device. An electronic vacuum pump is added that is in fluid communication with the device requiring vacuum or with the Venturi device. The electronic vacuum pump is operated during a stop condition of the start-stop engine to replace the vacuum generated by the Venturi device or to provide a pressure drop across the Venturi device so the Venturi device continues to generate vacuum for the device requiring vacuum.

Venturi devices and systems incorporating the same are disclosed. The Venturi devices include a lower body defining a passageway having a motive section and a discharge section spaced a distance apart from one another to define a first Venturi gap and a second Venturi gap downstream of the first Venturi gap at a position that divides the discharge section into a first portion between the first and second Venturi gaps and a second portion leading away from the second Venturi gap, and include an upper body defining a suction passageway in fluid communication with both the first and second Venturi gaps. The motive section and the discharge section converge toward the first Venturi gap.

Dual Venturi device

Venturi devices are disclosed herein that include a body defining a Venturi gap between an outlet end of a converging motive section and an inlet end of a diverging discharge section, having a suction port in fluid communication with the Venturi gap, a gate valve linearly translatable to open and close the Venturi gap, and an actuator connected to the gate valve to operatively move the gate valve between an open position and a closed position. The gate valve, in a longitudinal cross-section, is generally U-shaped, thereby having continuous, opposing sides that one each close the motive outlet and the discharge inlet and defining a void between the opposing sides that is in fluid communication with the suction port. The converging motive section defines a circular-shaped motive inlet and defines an elliptical- or polygonal-shaped motive outlet, and the diverging discharge section defines an elliptical- or polygonal-shaped discharge inlet.

A corona igniter () includes a metal shell () with a corona reducing lip () spaced from an insulator () and being free of sharp edges () to prevent arcing () in a rollover region and concentrate the electrical field at an electrode firing end (). The corona reducing lip () includes lip outer surfaces () being round, convex, concave, or curving continuously with smooth transitions () therebetween. The corona reducing lip () includes lip outer surfaces () presenting spherical lip radii (r) being at least 0.004 inches. The corona igniter () also includes shell inner surfaces () and insulator outer surfaces () facing one another being free of sharp edges ().

A Venturi device for producing vacuum from fluids in an engine system has a body defining a Venturi gap separating apart an outlet end of a converging motive section and an inlet end of a diverging discharge section by a lineal distance, and a suction port in fluid communication with the Venturi gap. The converging motive section and the diverging discharge section both gradually, continuously taper toward the Venturi gap, the converging motive section defines a circular-shaped motive inlet and an elliptical- or polygonal-shaped motive outlet, the diverging discharge section defines an elliptical- or polygonal-shaped discharge inlet, and an inner passageway of the converging motive section transitions as a hyperbolic function from the motive inlet to the elliptical- or polygonal-shaped motive outlet.

Aspirators for producing vacuum using the venturi effect

Venturi devices for producing vacuum are disclosed that include a housing defining a motive port, a suction port, a discharge port, a first flow passage between the motive port and the discharge port, and a second flow passage into and through the suction port and into fluid communication with the first flow passage, a first check valve incorporated into the housing and positioned to control fluid flow through the suction port, and a sound attenuating wrap about the outer surface of the housing. The Venturi devices may also include a sound attenuating member disposed in the first flow passage downstream of the intersection of the second flow passage and the first flow passage, in the portion of the second flow passage leading into the suction port, in the first check valve, or combinations thereof.

Restrictors are disclosed that include a body defining a Venturi tube having a throat defining a junction of a converging inlet cone to a diverging outlet cone along a longitudinal axis thereof, and with the converging inlet cone and the diverging outlet cone each defining an inner passageway that transitions as a hyperbolic or parabolic function toward the throat.

An evacuator for supplying vacuum to a device in a boosted engine air system is disclosed. The evacuator defines a body comprising a converging motive section, a diverging discharge section, at least one suction port, and a Venturi gap located between an outlet end of the converging motive section and an inlet end of the diverging discharge section. A lineal distance is measured between the outlet end and the inlet end. The lineal distance is decreased in length if higher suction vacuum at a specific set of operating conditions is required and the lineal distances is increased in length if higher suction flow rate at the specific set of operating conditions is required.

Low-cost evacuator for an engine having tuned Venturi gaps

Venturi devices that create vacuum have a housing defining a motive passageway converging toward a suction chamber, a discharge passageway diverging away from the suction chamber, and a suction passageway in fluid communication with the suction chamber. Within the suction chamber, a motive exit of the motive passageway is generally aligned with and spaced apart from a discharge entrance of the discharge passageway to define a Venturi gap, and the suction passageway enters the suction chamber at a position that generates about a 180 degree change in the direction of suction flow from the suction passageway to the discharge passageway. The motive passageway may terminate in a spout protruding into the suction chamber disposed spaced apart from all one or more sidewalls of the suction chamber and may subdivide downstream of the single entrance into two or more subpassageways each leading to one of two or more motive exits.

Vacuum producing device having a suction passageway and a discharge passageway entering through the same wall

Devices for producing vacuum using the Venturi effect are disclosed that have a motive passageway converging toward a suction chamber, a discharge passageway diverging away from the suction chamber, and a suction passageway, all of which are in fluid communication with the suction chamber. The motive passageway has a single entrance, and subdivides downstream thereof into a plurality of subpassageways, one each leading to one of the plurality of motive exits, which are spaced apart from a discharge entrance of the discharge passageway to define a Venturi gap. The fletch having a plurality of ribs extending between an exterior surface of the generally conically-shaped main body thereof and an interior surface of the motive passageway is disposed in the motive passageway. The ribs divide the motive passageway into the plurality of sub-passageways, each converging fluid flow over the exterior surface thereof toward one of the plurality of motive exits.
