The disclosed techniques provide for eliminating real-time transport protocol, RTP, extension bit X, marker bit M, time stamp and sequence number information and/or user data protocol, UDP, checksum information from the header of a packet for transmission.

Header elimination for real time internet applications

A device for bridging communications between radios on a tactical network and telephones on a public cellular network. A dock region of the device housing receives and engages a given telephone that operates on the second network. A processing core of the device has (a) a core engine for receiving and transmitting first radio frequency (RF) signals on the first network, (b) digital signal processing stages for (i) translating first information modulated on the first RF signals into a format compatible with telephones on the second network, and producing corresponding translated first information, and (ii) translating second information demodulated by the given telephone from second RF signals on the second network into a format compatible with radios on the first network, and modulating the translated second information on the first RF signals transmitted by the core engine. An adapter provides an interface between the processing core and the given telephone.

Bridging communications between tactical SDR and cellular telephone networks

A system for enabling interoperability among various kinds of communications equipment and information transmission formats on the battlefield or during tactical missions. The system includes a multi-message translator (MMT) for translating a source text message having a first set of word fields defined according to a source message format, into a sink message having a second set of word fields defined according to a sink message format. The system also includes a voice bridging gateway (VBG) for bridging multiple voice communication networks having associated transmission protocols that are incompatible with one another. Dismounted soldiers obtain location based services including geo-referenced maps, and tactical communications including voice and text messaging, using smart phones or other lightweight COTS client devices that link through a personal networking node (PNN) server to one or both of the MMT and the VBG.

Situational awareness integrated network and system for tactical information and communications

Each of a number of gateway network radios operates with a transmission protocol of an associated one of plural incompatible communication networks. Each network radio has an audio terminal for producing first audio signals detected from transmissions of user radios in its associated network, and a microphone terminal for receiving second audio signals for transmission to the user radios. A voice bridging gateway server has multiple ports each corresponding to one of the networks for coupling to the network radio associated with the one network. Each port receives the first audio signals from the audio terminal of the associated network radio, and produces the second audio signals for applying to the microphone terminal of the network radio. The server implements a private branch exchange application whereby user radios in a given communication network can be voice bridged with user radios in a selected one or more of the other networks.

Voice bridging gateway for tactical communications

A tactical network includes a radio that provides communications and situational awareness for a given user. The radio includes a screen, a communications module for linking the user with a network server, a knowledge management (KM) module for receiving alerts from the server and the communications module, and a map application that displays menu options for the user and receives the alerts from the server through the KM module. A communications interface initiates communications with the network server through the communications module, and sends information to the server from the map application. A user location module sends data corresponding to the user's location and targets identified by the user to the communications module for forwarding to the network server, and provides data originating from the server to the map application to show the locations of other radio users, their availability to exchange messages, and any targets they identify.

Personal networking node for tactical operations and communications

Nodes in a wireless network participate in either point-to-multipoint (PMP) or MANET/mesh communications with other nodes on one or more shared channels of the network. A first or base station node transmits a downlink signal having a time frame structure of determined duration to a number of second or subscriber nodes. Portions of the frame structure establish (i) first time periods during which messages are transmitted from the first node to the second nodes, and (ii) second time periods during which messages are transmitted from the second nodes to the first node, using the PMP protocol on one or more shared channels or subchannels of the network. Other portions of the time frame structure establish third time periods during which nodes communicate with one another using the MANET/mesh protocol on the shared channels or subchannels, while avoiding interference with messages transmitted under the PMP protocol.

Supporting mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) and point to multi-point (PMP) communications among nodes in a wireless network

Wireless medium access in a communication network having a number of terminals is controlled by defining protocol message units for transmission by a given terminal which units correspond to operational states of at least one of the terminal and the medium. A number of time slots are allocated for transmission of packets from each terminal, and a number of contention opportunities are defined at the beginning of each time slot. Priority and backoff mechanisms are defined and applied at each terminal during the contention opportunities in the slots. Packets are then transmitted by the terminal within the slots while (1) minimizing the occurrence of empty slots at times when packets are available for transmission, and (2) minimizing the number of slots during which two or more packets are detected on the medium simultaneously at the terminal.

Contention protocols for wireless medium access in communication networks

A process and system for enhancing connectivity among nodes of a wireless communications network by adapting to changes in the network topology. Nodes of the network are configured to operate according to either (i) an ad hoc protocol wherein a given node assumes a role of a mesh node capable of connecting with other like-configured nodes, or (ii) a point-to-multipoint protocol wherein the given node assumes a role of either a base station, or a subscriber station being served by another node which is assuming the role of a base station. A determination is made as to whether each node should operate according to the ad hoc protocol or the point-to-multipoint protocol, in order to maintain an optimum state of connectivity among all nodes of the network. The determined operating protocol is then implemented for each node.

Enhancement of node connectivity in a wireless communications network with changing topology via adaptive role changing

Member nodes of a wireless point-to-multipoint (PMP) network may participate in mobile ad hoc (MANET) or mesh communications with other nodes on the same channels used by the network for PMP communications. A PMP network base station node transmits a downlink signal defining a downlink map for scheduling first time periods for transmitting messages to subscriber station nodes, and an uplink map for scheduling second time periods allowing a subscriber station node to transmit messages to the base station node in a scheduled second time period. A MANET/mesh zone is allocated in either or both the downlink and the uplink maps, each zone operating to reserve one or more time slots and channels in which the base station and other nodes may communicate using a MANET/mesh protocol, thus avoiding interference with communications that are being conducted between the base and the subscriber station nodes under the PMP protocol.

Supporting mobile Ad-Hoc network (MANET) and point to multi-point (PMP) communications among nodes in a wireless network

A method and system for providing Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) in a wireless communications system using a Packet Data Conversion Protocol (PDCP) with enhanced functionality that allows sub-packets to be processed for transmission over different Radio Bearers (RB) with unequal or different levels of error protection and/or error detection based on perceptual importance of the bits in the sub-packets. The enhanced PDCP being operable to partition a packet into a plurality of sub-packets such that different levels of error protection and/or error detection may be applied to the packet. An overall gain in system capacity can be expected due to transmit power savings provided via unequal error detection and error protection.

Method to provide unequal error protection and unequal error detection for internet protocol applications

The disclosed techniques provide for eliminating real-time transport protocol, RTP, sequence number information and/or user data protocol, UDP, checksum information from the header of a packet for transmission.

Header compression for real time internet applications

A method and apparatus for reducing the information error rate of a communication network. The apparatus comprises a selector device coupled to a Framer and to an Interleaver. The selector device is configured to receive system information and the Framer is configured to receive user information. The apparatus is coupled to equipment which operate the communication network based on system parameters. The apparatus and method of the present invention improve the coding and effectively increase the interleaving depth applied to user information thus reducing the information error rate of the communication network without having to alter or modify any of the system parameters.

Apparatus and method of interleaving data to reduce error rate

A method is provided for detecting and recovering from missed control words that signify a transition to or from a speech mode to a data mode in a communication channel. When in a speech mode, speech information is checked for errors. If an error is detected, the next frame or segment of information is assumed to be data information. The data information is examined for valid information such as a valid header. If a valid header is detected, data mode is assumed and if a valid header is not detected, speech mode is assumed.

Voice and data wireless communication system with improved error recovery

An apparatus and method for controlling the timing of control bursts in a wireless communications network maps the timing of control bursts on a multiframe by multiframe basis. In one implementation, a method of controlling base station transmissions in a wireless network in accordance with a multi-frame timing structure is provided. The method is defined as a succession of y frames, each frame including a succession of x time-slots, and includes allocating a frame/time-slot number pair to set the timing of a first-type control burst for a first multi-frame, and changing at least one of the (i) frame number and (ii) frame number and time-slot number of the frame/time-slot number pair for a second multi-frame so that the timing of the first-type control burst is different during the second multi-frame relative to the first multi-frame.
