In order to avoid cavitation in a boom cylinder head end at the beginning of a dig cycle, fluid from an alternate source is supplied to the head end before or in addition to fluid supplied by the main boom-up hydraulic circuit. In one embodiment, an electronic hydraulic valve, related sensors, and control system determines the beginning of a dig operation and uses fluid at an intermediate pressure to rapidly provide fluid to a boom head end cylinder to prevent voiding or cavitation before fluid under high pressure from the main pump can be brought to the cylinder. An on/off fluid switch is activated early in a dig operation to address low pressure at the boom cylinder head end and provide an alternate path for fluid into the cylinder in reaction to the boom being lifted by a motion of the stick and bucket in contact with the work surface.

A direct injection fuel injector includes a nozzle tip having a plurality of passages allowing fluid communication between an inner nozzle tip surface portion and an outer nozzle tip surface portion and directly into a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. A first group of the passages have inner surface apertures located substantially in a first common plane. A second group of the passages have inner surface apertures located substantially in at least a second common plane substantially parallel to the first common plane. The second group has more passages than the first group.

A variable compression ratio mechanism for an internal combustion engine that has an engine block and a crankshaft is disclosed. The variable compression ratio mechanism has a plurality of eccentric disks configured to support the crankshaft. Each of the plurality of eccentric disks has at least one cylindrical portion annularly surrounded by the engine block. The variable compression ratio mechanism also has at least one actuator configured to rotate the plurality of eccentric disks.

The nozzle insert is a one piece metallic component with a large diameter segment separated from a small diameter segment by an annular engagement surface. One of the needle valve members is guided on an outer surface of the nozzle insert, and the nozzle insert has an interference fit attachment to the injector body.

A fuel injection system has the ability to produce two different spray patterns depending on the positioning of a needle control valve member. Positioning of the needle control valve member determines which of the two needle control chambers are placed in a low pressure condition. First and second needle valve members have closing hydraulic surfaces exposed to fluid pressure in the two needle control chambers. The injector preferably includes a homogenous charge nozzle outlet set and a conventional nozzle outlet set controlled respectively, by the first and second needle valve members.

The present invention relates generally to the field of homogenous charge compression ignition engines, in which fuel is injected when the cylinder piston is relatively close to the bottom dead center position for its compression stroke. The fuel mixes with air in the cylinder during the compression stroke to create a relatively lean homogeneous mixture that preferably ignites when the piston is relatively close to the top dead center position. However, if the ignition event occurs either earlier or later than desired, lowered performance, engine misfire, or even engine damage, can result. The present invention utilizes internal exhaust gas recirculation and/or compression ratio control to control the timing of ignition events and combustion duration in homogeneous charge compression ignition engines. Thus, at least one electro-hydraulic assist actuator is provided that is capable of mechanically engaging at least one cam actuated intake and/or exhaust valve.

This invention relates generally fluid mixer assembly and more particularly to an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) mixer comprising an inlet conduit, an exhaust conduit, and a shielded conduit. The shielded conduit is partially disposed in the inlet conduit and has a fluid diverting portion and fluid passing portion. The fluid diverting portion diverts intake air into a first fluid stream and a second fluid stream. Exhaust gas is passed through fluid passing portion and is mixed with the first fluid stream and second fluid stream generally at a point downstream of the shielded conduit.

An internal combustion engine exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system includes an exhaust gas manifold back pressure valve insert assembly which has an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) conduit interposed between exhaust manifold structure of the engine and atmospheric exhaust structure, and a valve mechanism disposed within the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) conduit and movable between a fully closed position at which all exhaust gases from the engine pass to atmospheric exhaust through the atmospheric exhaust structure, and a fully opened position at which the valve mechanism partially occludes the atmospheric exhaust structure such that a sufficiently large back pressure is developed with respect to the atmospheric exhaust structure such that exhaust gases are forced through the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) conduit.

An internal combustion engine including at least one cylinder head defining a plurality of combustion cylinders. Each combustion cylinder has a displacement volume. An exhaust manifold is fluidly connected to each cylinder for transporting exhaust gas therefrom. An intake manifold provides combustion air to each cylinder. A turbocharger is driven by exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold and provides charged combustion air to the intake manifold. A mixing vessel has at least two inlets, at least one outlet and a mixing chamber. One of the inlets is fluidly connected with the exhaust manifold and an other of the inlets is fluidly connected with the turbocharger. The one inlet and the other inlet are connected with the mixing vessel in a parallel manner. The mixing chamber has a volume which is dependent upon a plurality of the displacement volumes.
