Electromagnetic navigation systems and methods detect ambient or extraneous magnetic interference by inhibiting the navigation system from generating an electromagnetic field and measuring, with a sensor, the strength of a magnetic field at one or more frequencies of and at one or more phases associated with the electromagnetic field generated by the navigation system. The systems and methods may further determine whether the strength of the magnetic field is greater than a threshold. Based on this determination, an alert or message may be generated.

A medical instrument includes a printed ultrasound sensor, a surface, at least one non-conductive material, and at least one pair of contacts. The ultrasound sensor includes an array of ultrasound transducers printed on a non-conductive surface of the medical instrument. In one embodiment, a method for maintaining patency of an upper airway of a patient to treat obstructive sleep apnea may include delivering an electrical stimulation to a portion of a superior laryngeal nerve via a nerve cuff when the nerve cuff is adjacent an external surface of the superior laryngeal nerve, the nerve cuff having a plurality of electrodes, wherein the nerve cuff is configured to be connected to an electrical stimulator via a stimulation lead.

A medical instrument includes a printed sensor, a surface, at least one non-conductive material, and at least one pair of contacts. The sensor has at least one coil formed on a conductive material. The surface is suitable for receiving the printed sensor and can be placed in an EM field. The at least one non-conductive material covers the at least one coil of the sensor. The medical instrument contains multiple conductive and nonconductive layers. The at least one pair of contacts are electrically connected to the at least one coil and connectable to the conductive layer, the conductive layer coupled to a measurement device, which senses an induced electrical signal based on a magnetic flux change of the EM field. An apparatus for mapping and accuracy-testing an electromagnetic navigation system includes a sensor sensing electromagnetic vectors of an electromagnetic field, a carriage moving the sensor along a first direction and a second direction different from the first direction, a first position detector operatively associated with the sensor and detecting a first position of the sensor along the first direction, a second position detector operatively associated with the sensor and detecting a second position of the sensor along the second direction, and a controller operatively associated with the sensor and controlling movements of the carriage along the first and second directions and mapping the electromagnetic field based on the sensed electromagnetic vectors at predetermined positions in a coordinate system defined by the first direction, the second direction, and a third direction perpendicular to a plane defined by the first and second directions.

A surgical system includes an extended working channel, a magnetic field generator, a sensor, a workstation, a computer readable recording medium, and a remote control handle. The extended working channel is sized for insertion into the working channel of a bronchoscope and to receive one or more instruments therethrough. The sensor is associated with a distal end of the extended working channel for detecting a magnetic field generated by the magnetic field generator. The workstation includes a display and is operably connected to the sensor. The computer readable recording medium is associated with the workstation for storing a software program that enables association of the sensed magnetic field with a location of the sensor and that generates one or more images including one or more fields for presentation on the display. The remote control handle enables manipulation of the one or more fields generated by the software.
