An actuated, height adjustable optical table or workstation for use in microscopy, optical research laboratories and similar environments includes fixed and moving parts which combine to create a rigid, height adjustable table structure on which to mount an optical breadboard or similar platforms via optional passive or active vibration isolation mounts. The height adjustment is performed by multiple compact actuators with associated control hardware and software, and allows the user or an application system to perform activities with the table at any heights.

A piezoelectric actuator with integrated features to provide coarse position adjustment of a pushing threaded rod and also mechanically amplified piezo motion for fine position adjustment is presented here in three design variants. The mechanical amplifier houses one or more piezo stacks in longitudinal axis with preload to translate an amplified motion in the order of a few times in the transverse axis, perpendicular to the piezo stack motion. The piezo amplifier output travel is transmitted to the threaded rod with a ball at the end to push a desired surface for position adjustments and motion translation in application such as a mirror mount.

Amplified piezo actuator with coarse adjustment

A piezoelectric actuator with integrated features to provide linear displacement of a threaded rod is presented. One mechanism provides mechanically amplified piezo motion for high speed/short travel position scanning whereas the other provides a low speed/long travel piezo motorized position adjustment. Mechanical amplifier incorporates one or more piezo stacks in longitudinal axis with preload to translate an amplified motion in the order of a few times in the transverse axis, perpendicular to the piezo stack motion. The piezo amplified output travel is transmitted to the internally threaded features of the other mechanism where a screw with a ball at the end to push a desired surface for high speed scanning mode translation. The internally threaded feature of the other mechanism is also operated by a secondary piezo stack which produces slip-stick motion steps to rotate the screw in one direction or the other to produce a slow speed/long travel mode.

A stage comprising a first translation platform having a first axis of motion, and a second translation platform having a second axis of motion, a first linear drive motor for driving the first translation platform in the first axis of motion, and a second linear drive motor for driving the second translation platform in the second axis of motion, wherein each linear drive motor further comprises a coil assembly enclosing a rod stator, and wherein the coil assembly is fixed and the rod stator is movable within the coil assembly.

A mechanical device for maintaining parallelism includes first, second, third and fourth bars. The first side surface of the first bar and the first side surface of the second bar are bridged by a first flexure, leaving a gap between the bottom surface of the first bar and the upper surface of the second bar; the second side surface of the second bar and the second side surface of the third bar are bridged by a second flexure, leaving a gap between the bottom surface of the second bar and the upper surface of the third bar; and the first side surface of the third bar and the first side surface of the fourth bar are bridged by a third flexure, leaving a gap between the bottom surface of the third bar and the upper surface of the fourth bar.
