A turbocharger and a method are disclosed. The turbocharger includes a casing having an inlet end and an outlet end. A flow passage within the casing may have a substantially continuous inner surface and may be configured to pass inlet air from the inlet end to the outlet end. A compressor wheel may be located in the casing and may have at least one main blade and may be configured to rotate within the casing to compress the inlet air. A flow disrupting feature on the casing may be configured to disrupt the continuity of the inner surface and may be located at a leading edge of the at least one main blade. The flow disrupting feature may be closed to upstream communication with the flow passage except via the flow passage.

Turbocharger compressor noise reduction system and method

Methods and systems are provided for a compressor of a turbocharger of an engine. In one example, a compressor may include a flow passage and a resonance chamber surrounding the flow passage, with the flow passage fluidly coupled with the resonance chamber by a recirculation passage, a bleed passage, and a plurality of apertures positioned between the recirculation passage and the bleed passage. Flowing fluid from the resonance chamber, through the apertures, and into the flow passage may reduce a noise level of the compressor.

Methods and systems are provided for a wastegate of a turbocharger including a valve plate, valve actuation mechanism, and a bifurcated wastegate passage. In one example design, the wastegate may include a valve plate having an interior with a multiplane curved surface and a first mating feature centered along the curved surface, the curved surface forming a raised edge and a side opening on opposite sides of the valve plate; and a passage bifurcated by a central wall, an end of the central wall including a second mating feature adapted to have face-sharing contact with the first mating feature. The first mating feature may be either a rib or recessed slot formed on the valve plate, and the second mating feature may be one end of the central wall.

Wastegate for an engine system

Methods and systems are provided for a wastegate of a turbocharger including a valve plate, valve actuation mechanism, and a wastegate passage. In one example design, the wastegate may include a valve plate having flow formations such as a multiplane curved surface on an interior of the valve plate and a side opening; a passage including a constricted section positioned upstream of the valve plate, the valve plate positioned at an end of the passage. In this way, the flow formations on the wastegate valve may act in conjunction with the constricted section in the passage to guide exhaust flow to an exhaust catalyst.

Methods and systems are provided for a 2-port integrated exhaust manifold for an inline-3, inline-6, V-6, and/or V-12 engine. In one example, a system may include an exhaust manifold integrated within a cylinder head of an engine block. The integrated exhaust manifold may include a first set of two runners from a first outer cylinder coupled to a first manifold exhaust port, a second set of two runners of a second outer cylinder coupled to a second manifold exhaust port, and one runner of an inner cylinder coupled to the first manifold exhaust port and another runner of the inner cylinder coupled to the second manifold exhaust port.

Systems and methods for a multiple spool engine turbocharger are described. In one example approach, a multi-spool turbocharger comprises a compressor including a plurality of counter-rotating compressor spools and a turbine including a plurality of counter-rotating turbine spools.

A method for operating turbocharger waste gate of a turbocharged engine is disclosed. In one example, the method operates the waste gate synchronous with engine operation via a mechanical coupling between the waste gate and a camshaft or a crankshaft. The approach may reduce turbocharger lag and improve turbocharger efficiency.

Systems and methods for controlling compressor inlet flow in a turbocharger of an engine are described. In one example, a method for controlling a compressor inlet flow of an engine turbocharger system includes: directing air from a high pressure source to an inlet upstream of a compressor wheel via a conduit coupled to the inlet and the high pressure source, where the conduit is obliquely coupled to the inlet.

An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system for a vehicle is provided. The EGR system includes a turbine fluidly coupled downstream of an exhaust manifold and an EGR conduit including a first port coupled to an exhaust passage directly downstream of the turbine, an axis of the first port arrange at a non-perpendicular angle with respect to the rotation axis of the turbine and a second port coupled to an intake system.

An internal combustion engine with charge stratification and directed air flow is provided. A charge motion control valve is positioned in the upper intake manifold and bifurcated intake ports are utilized in the cylinder head which direct the air flow into one intake port when desired. This provides improved engine performance, emissions, and fuel economy with easier packaging and consequently reduced cost.

An intake manifold and method for supplying EGR are provided for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine. The manifold is attached to a cylinder head. The manifold includes a plurality of intake runners for conducting air to a plurality of intake ports formed in the cylinder head. An intake plenum communicates with the intake runners. A secondary gas reservoir is provided in the manifold for communication of secondary gas to the plenum.

A reciprocating internal combustion engine uses intake valve seats which are offset from the intake port center lines such that charge motion of the inlet charge will be increased without the need for a charge motion control valve, and without causing a loss of volumetric efficiency of the engine.
