An apparatus to interrogate, receive, and analyze full emission spectra for at least one fluorescence excitation wavelength and for at least one reflectance measurement to determine tissue characteristics. The apparatus includes a base unit having illumination, detection and control sub-units, the illumination sub-unit providing illumination optical energy for illuminating a target tissue and the detection sub-unit detecting tissue characteristics of a target tissue, a separate tissue interface unit, and a pathway coupling the base unit and the tissue interface unit. The system and apparatus may also include a tube for maintaining the distance between the tissue and units and for surrounding the tissue to prevent patient movement from being transmitted to the tissue.

System and method for determining tissue characteristics

A system and method embodying the invention can be used to detect a characteristic or condition of a patient. A method embodying the invention may include the steps of illuminating a portion of a skin of the patient with light, detecting a frequency spectrum of light scattered from the skin, determining, from first and second portions of the spectrum, a first parameter indicative of a blood content of the skin and a second parameter indicative of a melanin content of the skin, determining, from a third portion of the spectrum, a third parameter indicative of an uncorrected bilirubin concentration, and calculating a corrected bilirubin concentration based on the first, second and third parameters.

Method and system for determining bilirubin concentration

A device and method for comparing and correlating two or more portions of similar or disparate test data allows a doctor or technician to easily diagnose and/or treat a condition or defect. A device or method embodying the invention can be used for diagnosing vision disorders by correlating visual sensitivity or acuity data to images or data corresponding to biological structures responsible for vision. Such a method allows a doctor to easily identify defects or conditions of a biological structure that causes a loss of vision. In one embodiment of the invention, optical sensitivity data and biological structure data may be stored in multiple data layers, and the data layers can be compared to one another to identify pattern matches between data layers. Similar methods can be used to compare and correlate any two or more types of similar or disparate types of test data. Also, combined presentations of two portions of data can be used to selectively apply treatment to a target tissue. For instance, a previously recorded image can be superimposed on a real-time image to help guide application of a treatment to the target tissue.

System and method for diagnosing and treating a target tissue

A disposable calibration device is used to calibrate a measurement system which transmits radiation or acoustic waves to a material or tissue in order to effect measurements. The disposable calibration device includes a structure with a window through which the radiation or acoustic waves can be transmitted, as well as a removable calibration target arranged on the window and capable of returning a portion of the radiation or acoustic waves for calibrating the measurement system. The removable calibration target can be peeled from a window to allow a measurement to be made on the material or tissue. Once a measurement is complete, the disposable calibration device can be discarded and a new calibration device can be inserted on the measuring system.

Apparatus and method for calibrating measurement systems

A system and method for determining a duration that a patient has been experiencing a medical condition compares characteristics of fluorescent emissions from a target tissue to expected characteristics. In a system and method embodying the invention, a target tissue is illuminated with excitation light, and fluorescent emissions generated by the target tissue in response to the excitation light are detected. Different characteristics of the fluorescent emissions, including the fluorescent emission intensity or the fluorescent lifetime may be determined. The determined characteristics of the detected fluorescent emissions are then compared to expected characteristics of the fluorescent emissions. The amount that the detected fluorescent characteristics deviate from the expected fluorescent characteristics is used to determine a duration that a patient has been experiencing a medical condition. In some instances, the backscattered portions of the excitation light may also be used to make the determination.

Method and apparatus for determining a duration of a medical condition

A system and method for calibrating a measurement instrument prior to making a measurement on a material or tissue includes utilizing a removable calibration device to calibrate the instrument, then removing a target portion of the calibration device so that a measurement may be performed. The calibration device may include an index matching agent, such as a gel, that is to be interposed between the patient's skin and an output end of the measuring instrument. A method embodying the invention may include making a bilirubin concentration measurement on a skin of a patient by measuring the amplitude of light reflected from the patient's skin at first and second wavelengths indicative of a blood content of the patient's skin, and measuring the amplitude of reflected light at a third wavelength indicative of an uncorrected bilirubin concentration, then calculating a corrected bilirubin concentration based on the three measurements. The method may also include taking measurements at fourth and fifth wavelengths indicative of a melanin content of the patient's skin, and calculating the bilirubin concentration based on the fourth and fifth measurements.

Analyzing system with disposable calibration device

A fluid jet blood sampling system and method for obtaining a blood sample from a mammal, utilizes a fluid jet from a disposable jet nozzle to perforate at least the epidermis of the skin and to break at least one blood vessel, thereby allowing a quantity of blood to accumulate on the skin surface of the mammal. A cowling prevents contamination of the local environment with excess fluid, blood, etc. A drying unit may be provided to remove excess fluid, blood, etc. from the skin within the cowling. A sample of blood may be transferred to a test strip, or a collection unit may be used to collect and contain a blood sample from the mammal.

Fluid jet blood sampling device and methods

The biological structure data may include an image of an eye, or an image of an optic nerve or a portion a brain responsible for processing optical data. The optical sensitivity data can be in the form of numerals indicative of optical sensitivity, isopter lines, or other types of patterns or symbols indicative of optical sensitivity. In one embodiment of the invention, optical sensitivity data and biological structure data may be stored in multiple data layers, and the data layers can be compared to one another to identify pattern matches between data layers. Similar methods can be used to compare and correlate any two or more disparate types of test data.
