An improved process for cell opening of cellular polyurethane molded foam using timed partial pressure release (TPPR) reduces pinch deformation and contour lines by releasing the internal mold pressure in a curing cellular molded polyurethane foam product in a controlled manner which allows gas to escape from the mold, but which prohibits relative movement of the mold sealing surfaces by more than an imperceptible amount.

High resilience polyurethane foams having improved wet set properties are obtained by reacting an isocyanate with a polyol component consisting of a polyoxyalkylene polyol with a functionality of 6 or more and a polymer polyol whose base polyol is a polyoxyalkylene polyol with a functionality of 6 or more, both polyols having oxyethylene caps in amounts of from 12 percent to about 30 percent based on the weights of the respective polyols, in the presence of an amine catalyst system. The resulting polyurethane foams are eminently suitable for seating cushions used in tropical or subtropical environments, may be prepared by a cold molding process, and may be used without an elevated temperature post cure.

Vents for molds can be improved if, in place of a single relatively large vent opening, there is used a vent which has a plurality of relatively smaller vent openings in which the cumulative cross-sectional area of the relatively smaller vent openings are approximately the same as that of the relatively larger vent opening it replaces. A process for making molded high resilience polyurethane cellular products which require reduced crushing in preventing the products from substantially shrinking or changing dimensionally upon cooling which comprises: exposing the curing product to atmospheric pressure while in contact with the confines of the mold at a time when the cell walls of the curing polyurethane cellular product have cured sufficiently to develop sufficient strength to partially resist bursting by the pressure of said expansion gases contained within the cell walls upon exposure to atmospheric pressure, but before the cell walls have cured sufficiently to develop sufficient strength so that exposure to atmospheric pressure does not result in a reduction of the crushing force necessary to prevent the products from substantially shrinking or changing dimensionally.

A process for making molded flexible polyurethane cellular products which do not substantially shrink or change dimensionally upon cooling is provided by exposing the curing product to atmospheric pressure while in the confines of the mold. Exposure can be accomplished by unlatching the mold or opening a port at an appropriate time after the reaction mixture was introduced into the mold so as to burst the cell walls of the polyurethane product.
