An oil cooler comprises a cooler core having an oil fin. The oil fin includes a moveable window. The moveable window includes a base and a first flap on one side of the base. The first flap moves between a closed position and an open position. The first flap is in the open position when the cooler core is in a hot condition.

A heat exchanger comprises a shell comprising a hollow shell body and separate shell end members attached thereto. A number of tubes is disposed within the shell body which is sized to permit both ends of the tubes to project outwardly therefrom to facilitate access for attaching the tubes ends to respective tube header plates, after which time the shell end members are slid over the shell body towards the shell body ends for attachment to respective header plates. The heat exchanger can include an expansion element attached between a shell end member and the shell body, wherein the expansion element is positioned adjacent a slidable joint formed by an overlapping section of the shell body and shell end member. Together, the expansion element accommodates axial movement and the slidable joint carries vibration loads between the shell body and shell end member.

A flat tube for a heat exchanger having a stack of such flat tubes. The flat tube has a plurality of spaced-apart dimples formed on each of its opposite faces. At least some of the dimples on each face have an elongate plan shape, at least some of the elongate dimples being obliquely oriented such that their major axes form oblique angles with a longitudinal axis of the tube. The obliquely oriented elongate dimples are positioned such that when two of the tubes are stacked, the obliquely oriented elongate dimples on opposing faces of the tubes contact one another and the major axes of each contacting pair of elongate dimples are non-parallel to each other. Each contacting pair of elongate dimples of adjacent tubes thus forms a 'cross' or 'X'.

A heat exchanger has a shell and tube stack disposed within a shell inner chamber. A coolant chamber extends from a shell end, accommodates a portion of the tube stack, and has a sidewall that extends outwardly from the tube stack. A divider is disposed within the coolant chamber between the sidewall and tube stack, and extends axially along the chamber to the end of the shell splitting the coolant chamber into inlet and outlet coolant passages. For example, a pair of dividers are disposed within the coolant chamber and are attached to a respective sidewall surfaces. A coolant inlet and outlet is in fluid flow communication with respective inlet and outlet coolant passages. A cooling medium within the heat exchanger flows longitudinally within the inlet coolant passage along the tube stack in a direction opposite from the coolant flow path within the outlet coolant passage.

Apparatus and method for cooling heated fluids, such as exhaust gases, flowing through a heat exchanger comprising one or more exhaust plenums and one or more coolant plenums, and providing increased coolant velocity in that portion of the coolant plenums contacting the inlet portion of the exhaust plenums. Local increased coolant velocity is provided by any means, including decreasing the area-in-flow of the coolant plenums wherein increased velocity is desired, shaping or baffling either or both inlet or outlet coolant tanks in fluidic contact with coolant plenums wherein increased velocity is desired, or a combination thereof.

A cooling system comprises a cooler with a hot-side passage extending between hot-side inlet and outlets. The cooler further includes a cooling passage extending between cold-side inlet and outlets. A cooling medium is disposed within the cooling passage, and is in contact with the hot-side passage to reduce the temperature of the gas or liquid passing through the hot-side passage. The cooling system is configured to regulate the condition of the cooling medium within the cooler to reduce/eliminate unwanted boiling of the cooling medium being within the cooler. The cooling system can include controller that provides an output signal in response to a detected condition of the cooling medium, and a device that receives the output signal and changes the operation of the cooling system and/or operation of an internal combustion engine to reduce the occurrence of unwanted cooling medium boiling within the cooler.

A heat exchanger includes a shell that has an inner chamber defined by an inside wall surface. A tube stack disposed within the inner chamber and includes a plurality of flat elongated tubes that define a first fluid flow path. The tubes each include a wire that is wound around a tube outside surface and that extends in a helical manner along a tube length. When stacked together, the wires of adjacent tubes connect with one another to form an 'X' pattern connection that operates to both distance the adjacent tubes and form a second fluid flow path along the outside surfaces of the tubes. The connection between the wires causes turbulent flow in the coolant that improves the heat transfer characteristic of the coolant, and the connection between the wires provides structural support to the tubes in the tube stack to help reduce vibration induced heat exchanger failures.

A charge air cooler with an integral precooler is disclosed which cools charge air by using both liquid coolant and air coolant. The charge air path is not affected by the use of the liquid coolant. The charge air cooler disclosed can cool particularly hot charge air without a significant drop in pressure.

Apparatus and method for cooling heated fluids, such as exhaust gases, flowing through a heat exchanger including at least one exhaust gas plenum with fins or other heat transfer structure and at least one coolant plenum, and providing decreased heat exchange in that portion of the exhaust gas plenum contacting the inlet thereof by decreasing the fin or heat transfer structure density in such portion relative to the remainder of the exhaust gas plenum.

Heat exchangers, constructed in accordance with principles of this invention, comprise a plurality of first passages, for transporting a first fluid or gas therethrough, and one or more second passages for transporting a second fluid or gas therethrough. The second passages are positioned adjacent to the first passages to permit a desired transfer of thermal energy from the first passages to the second passages. At least one manifold is placed in communication with one of the first or second passages. The manifold includes an opening disposed therethrough for receiving or dispensing the first or second fluid or gas to or from the first or second passages. The heat exchanger includes a flow director disposed therein for diverting or distributing the flow of first or second fluid or gas in a manner different from a natural fluid or gas flow within the heat exchanger. The flow director can be provided as an integral part of the heat exchanger itself, or can be provided as a separate element within the heat exchanger.

An apparatus and method for cooling hot fluids, especially exhaust gases, with a multi-pass cooler core. The cooler core is particularly useful for cooling exhaust gases flowing in an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system or regime in operative association with an internal combustion engine, such as a diesel engine. Cooled gases are recirculated to the engine input to help reduce noxious exhaust emissions. The invention utilizes unequal areas-in-flow between the first exhaust pass through the core and the second and subsequent passes through the core. The first pass through the core features an area-in-flow comparatively larger than the area-in-flow of the second pass. The difference in areas-in-flow between passes influences gas velocities to reduce fouling, despite changes in exhaust gas temperature between passes through the core.
