In some embodiments, a method to excite a shock wave in a target assembly includes: splitting a pulsed laser beam into a plurality of pulsed laser beams; spatially shaping the plurality of pulsed laser beams into a plurality of concentric pulsed laser rings of different diameters; and adjusting temporal and/or spatial intervals between the concentric pulsed laser rings to substantially match propagation times of a ring-shaped laser-driven shock wave from one ring to the next in a shock propagation layer of the target assembly.

Synchronous excitation of multiple shock waves

Novel and advantageous masks and helmets to protect an athlete's head and face from impacts and injuries. In particular, the present disclosure relates to novel and advantageous masks and helmets to help protect a baseball or softball catcher's face and head from concussive forces of an incoming ball strike. A mask of the present disclosure may be coupled to a helmet, or may be configured for use without a helmet in some embodiments. The mask may provide a generally cone-shaped structure in front of a wearer's face, so as to provide an angled surface for contact with an incoming ball. Additionally, a shock absorbing material may be provided at an interface between the helmet and mask to reduce and distribute force transfer between the mask and the helmet.

A nonlinear terahertz (THz) spectroscopy technique uses a sample illuminated by two THz pulses separately. The illumination generates two signals Band B, corresponding to the first and second THz pulse, respectively, after interaction with the sample. The interaction includes excitation of at least one ESR transition in the sample. The sample is also illuminated by the two THz pulses together, with an inter-pulse delay &#x3c4;, generating a third signal B. A nonlinear signal BNL is then derived via B=B&#x2212;B&#x2212;B. This nonlinear signal Bcan be then processed (e.g., Fourier transform) to study the properties of the sample.

Systems, apparatus, and methods of nonlinear terahertz (THz) magnetic resonance measurement

Quality control of a periodic structure is performed using the damping rate of acoustic waves generated in the periodic structure. In this technique, an excitation light beam illuminates the first layer in the periodic structure to excite an acoustic wave. Possible irregularities in the periodic structure can scatter the acoustic wave, thereby increasing the damping rate of the acoustic wave. A sequence of probe light beams illuminates the periodic structure to measure the acoustic wave as a function of time to generated a temporal signal representing the damping rate of the acoustic signal. The acquired damping rate is employed to evaluate the quality of the periodic structure.

Systems and methods for quality control of a periodic structure

An apparatus for detecting electromagnetic radiation within a target frequency range is provided. The apparatus includes a substrate and one or more resonator structures disposed on the substrate. The substrate can be a dielectric or semiconductor material. Each of the one or more resonator structures has at least one dimension that is less than the wavelength of target electromagnetic radiation within the target frequency range, and each of the resonator structures includes at least two conductive structures separated by a spacing. Charge carriers are induced in the substrate near the spacing when the resonator structures are exposed to the target electromagnetic radiation. A measure of the change in conductivity of the substrate due to the induced charge carriers provides an indication of the presence of the target electromagnetic radiation.

Detection of electromagnetic radiation using nonlinear materials

A two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy system and a 2D spectroscopic analysis method are disclosed. The 2D spectroscopy system includes: a light transmission delayer configured for forming a plurality of first light pulses from first light pulse and causing a relative time delay therebetween; a response pulse wave generator configured for generating a plurality of response pulse waves responds and having a relative time delay, and for irradiating the plurality of response pulse waves on the sample; an optical readout pulse array generator configured for forming an optical readout pulse array by splitting the second light pulse into a plurality of regions having different time delays and spatially discriminated from one another; and a reader configured for reading out by overlapping the optical readout pulse array with a signal generated from the sample.

Two-dimensional spectroscopy system and two-dimensional spectroscopic analysis method

A radiation detection technique employs field enhancing structures and electroluminescent materials to converts incident Terahertz (THz) radiation into visible light and/or infrared light. In this technique, the field-enhancing structures, such as split ring resonators or micro-slits, enhances the electric field of incoming THz light within a local area, where the electroluminescent material is applied. The enhanced electric field then induces the electroluminescent material to emit visible and/or infrared light via electroluminescent process. A detector such as avalanche photodiode can detect and measure the emitted light. This technique allows cost-effective detection of THz radiation at room temperatures.

Systems, methods, and apparatus for radiation detection

Methods and apparatus are disclosed, and include: (a) separating an input electromagnetic waveform into a plurality of intermediate waveforms, each of the intermediate waveforms being spatially separated from one another; (b) dispersing frequency components of each intermediate waveform onto different regions of a spatial light modulator and modulating at least some of the dispersed frequency components with the spatial light modulator; and (c) recombining the dispersed frequency components for each of the intermediate waveforms to produce a plurality of temporally shaped output waveforms.

Multidimensional pulse shaper and spectrometer

The invention is a handheld device for puncturing oil filters and thus allowing more retained oil to drain from used filters. An oil filter has several internal chambers filled with oil which do not drain by gravity from the filter unless the sidewall of the filter is punches. The device of the invention punches the sidewall of the filters, and provides a rack for draining the oil filters.

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for directing optical radiation to make multiple passes across an extended region of an electro-optic material, where during each pass the electro-optic material converts a portion of the optical radiation into terahertz radiation, and where the optical radiation is directed into the electro-optic material to cause an amplitude of the terahertz radiation generated from one or more earlier passes of the optical radiation to be constructively enhanced by the terahertz radiation generated from a later pass of the optical radiation.

Disclosed is a method including: (i) dispersing frequency components of an input EM waveform along a first direction with each frequency component spatially extended along a second direction different from the first direction; (ii) setting an amplitude for an output portion of each of the spatially extended frequency components; and (iii) combining the output portions from the different frequency components to produce a temporally shaped output EM waveform, wherein setting the amplitude of each output portion comprises diffracting a corresponding input portion for the spatially extended frequency component along the second direction into different diffraction orders, wherein the combined output portions correspond to a common diffraction order. A system for performing the method is also disclosed.

Diffraction-based pulse shaping with a 2D optical modulator

A method for characterizing one or more properties of a sample using acoustic waveforms is disclosed, and comprises directing a sequence of at least three optical pulses to the sample to generate an acoustic response in the sample at a frequency corresponding to the pulse sequence, varying the timing of one or more of the pulses in the sequence to vary the frequency of the acoustic response in the sample, and measuring the strength of the acoustic response as a function of the varied frequency to determine information about the sample.
