A fiber optic cable includes a cable core of core elements and a protective sheath surrounding the core elements, an armor surrounding the cable core, the armor comprising a single overlap portion when the fiber optic cable is viewed in cross-section, and a jacket surrounding the armor, the jacket having at least two longitudinal discontinuities extruded therein. A method of accessing the cable core without the use of ripcords includes removing a portion of the armor in an access section by pulling the armor away from the cable core so that an overlap portion separates around the cable core as it is being pulled past the cable core. A protective sheath protects the core elements as the armor is being pulled around the cable core.

Binder film for a fiber optic cable

A fiber optic cable includes a core assembly including an optical fiber, a polymeric sleeve surrounding the core assembly, water-swellable material integrated with the polymeric sleeve, and a jacket surrounding the polymeric sleeve. The polymeric sleeve is continuous peripherally around the core assembly, forming a continuous closed loop when viewed in cross-section, and continuous lengthwise along a length of the cable.

Cables have dielectric armor with an armor profile that resembles conventional metal armored cable. The armor can be formed as a single layer, without requiring an outer jacket layer. The dielectric armor provides additional crush and impact resistance for the optical fibers and/or fiber optic assembly therein. The armored cables recover substantially from deformation caused by crush loads. Additionally, the armored fiber optic assemblies can have any suitable flame and/or smoke rating for meeting the requirements of the intended space. The assemblies can additionally be lightweight and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.

Armored fiber optic assemblies and methods of forming fiber optic assemblies

A fiber optic cable includes a core and a binder film surrounding the core. The core includes a central strength member and core elements, such as buffer tubes containing optical fibers, where the core elements are stranded around the central strength member in a pattern of stranding including reversals in lay direction of the core elements. The binder film is in radial tension around the core such that the binder film opposes outwardly transverse deflection of the core elements. Further, the binder film loads the core elements normally to the central strength member such that contact between the core elements and central strength member provides coupling there between, limiting axial migration of the core elements relative to the central strength member.

A sub-assembly of a fiber optic cable, the sub-assembly includes a central strength member, core elements wound about the central strength member in a stranded configuration, wherein the core elements comprise buffer tubes, filler rods, secondary strength members, and/or conductive wires, and a binder film overlaying the stranded core elements, the binder film comprising a polymeric material having a Young's modulus of 3 gigapascals or less such that the binder film constrains the core elements.

Cables have dielectric armors with armor profiles that provide additional crush and impact resistance for the optical fibers and/or fiber optic assembly therein, while retaining flexibility to aid during installation. The armored cables recover substantially from deformation caused by crush loads.

A fiber optic cable, or a sub-assembly thereof, includes core elements and a binder film. Armor, configured for use with a fiber optic assembly, includes a dielectric tube having an armor profile and a length, where the dielectric tube has at least one layer formed from a rigid material. The armor profile is undulating along the length, and the armor profile has a band thickness and a web thickness. The band thickness is between about 0.5 millimeters and about five millimeters. The web thickness is less than the band thickness, and the web thickness is greater than or equal to 0.1 times the band thickness.
