A position measurement system for a steering system includes a steering shaft. The position measurement system also includes a worm gear coupled to the steering shaft. The position measurement system further includes a worm in meshed engagement with the worm gear, the worm driven by a motor. The position measurement system yet further includes a first sensor operatively coupled to the worm to detect an angular position of the worm and the motor that drives the worm. The position measurement system also includes a driving gear coupled to the steering shaft. The position measurement system further includes a spur gear in meshed engagement with the driving gear. The position measurement system yet further includes a second sensor operatively coupled to the spur gear to detect an angular position of the spur gear.

Handwheel position measurement system and method

A method for steering torque sensor stray magnetic field cancellation includes receiving, from at least one magnetic sensor disposed within a torque sensing region, a detected magnetic field corresponding to an angular displacement between an upper steering shaft and a lower steering shaft of an electronic power steering system. The method also includes generating a first torque signal based on the detected magnetic field and receiving, from at least one stray region sensor disposed outside of the torque sensing region, a detected stray magnetic field. The method also includes determining a torque signal error based on the detected stray magnetic field and generating a second torque signal based on the first torque signal and the torque signal error. The method also includes selectively controlling at least a portion of the electronic power steering system using the second torque signal.

Stray magnetic field cancellation for steering torque sensor

A position identification assembly for a steering column is provided. The assembly may include a mount bracket, a steering column, a sensor, and a controller. The mount bracket may define an opening to the cavity. The steering column may be mounted to the mount bracket for translation at least partially in to and out of the cavity and the steering column may define one or more physical features therealong. The sensor may be secured to the mount bracket to detect the physical features. Each of the one or more physical features may be arranged upon the steering column such that the sensor detects the one or more physical features when the steering column translates between positions and may send a signal to the controller reflecting the same. The controller is programmed to identify a steering column position based on the received signal.

A gear includes a gear body and a first gear tooth. The gear body extends radially between an outer portion and an inner portion. The first gear tooth has a first tooth portion, a second tooth portion, and a first slot. The first tooth portion extends radially from the outer portion towards a first land. The second tooth portion is circumferentially spaced apart from the first tooth portion and extends radially from the outer portion towards a second land. The first slot is defined between the first tooth portion and the second tooth portion and extends from at least one of the first land and the second land towards a first slot root.

The invention relates to a torque sensor assembly with an upper rotor mounted on an upper shaft axially disposed about a rotational axis, an outer lower rotor axially disposed about the rotational axis, an inner lower rotor axially disposed about the rotational axis between the upper rotor and the outer lower rotor, and at least one probe positioned between the outer lower rotor and the inner lower rotor, the at least one probe measures flux generated by the upper rotor and directed by the outer lower rotor and the inner lower rotor.

A steering system for detecting a hand wheel position is provided and includes an input shaft connected to a hand wheel, a main gear disposed around the input shaft, a puck gear meshingly engaged with the main gear, and a control module. The control module receives an angular main position of the main gear and an angular puck position of the puck gear. The control module includes a rotational calculation module for calculating the hand wheel position based on at least the angular main position and the angular puck position.
