A method of achieving the controlled release of thermonuclear energy by illuminating a minute, solid density, hollow shell of a mixture of material such as deuterium and tritium with a high intensity, uniformly converging laser wave to effect an extremely rapid build-up of energy in inwardly traveling shock waves to implode the shell creating thermonuclear conditions causing a reaction of deuterons and tritons and a resultant high energy thermonuclear burn. Utilizing the resulting energy as a thermal source and to breed tritium or plutonium. The invention also contemplates a laser source wherein the flux level is increased with time to reduce the initial shock heating of fuel and provide maximum compression after implosion; and, in addition, computations and an equation are provided to enable the selection of a design having a high degree of stability and a dependable fusion performance by establishing a proper relationship between the laser energy input and the size and character of the selected material for the fusion capsule.

Analog method and apparatus for producing an axial tomographic image of an object, typically the human body, using a detector for receiving radiation along a plurality of sets of paths, with the sets of paths overlapping each other, and providing a plurality of sets of detector output signals. Prior art devices exist for producing the detector output signals, which signals are then manipulated in a digital computer to produce the desired image. In one embodiment of the present invention, the detector output signals are summed in a storage tube and the stored signals are read in an inversely proportional relation, providing another signal for storage in another storage tube which is then read with a Laplacian relation to give a video signal for display and/or recording. Optical and electrostatic storage systems are also disclosed.

A laser amplification method for increasing the energy extraction efficiency from laser amplifiers while reducing the energy flux that passes through a flux limited system which includes apparatus for decomposing a linearly polarized light beam into multiple components, passing the components through an amplifier in delayed time sequence and recombining the amplified components into an in phase linearly polarized beam.
