A method for producing a carbonic acid ester, which comprises reacting an aliphatic alcohol with carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of 1 a platinum group metal or its salt, 2 metal copper, a copper salt or a copper complex, 3 at least one member selected from the group consisting of alkali metal salts and alkaline earth metal salts, and 4 a 2-hydroxypyridine.

A method for producing a lactone by hydrogenating a dicarboxylic acid, a dicarboxylic acid anhydride and/or a dicarboxylic acid ester in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the hydrogenation reaction is conducted in the liquid phase in the presence of (1) ruthenium, (2) an organic phosphine and (3) a compound of a metal selected from the group consisting of Groups IVA, VA and IIIB in the Periodic Table. According to the present invention, for the production of a lactone by hydrogenating a dicarboxylic acid, a dicarboxylic acid anhydride and/or a dicarboxylic ester, the reaction is conducted in a homogeneous liquid phase reaction by using the ruthenium,organic phosphine and compound of a metal selected from the group consisting of Groups IVA, VA and IIIB, of the present invention as the catalyst, whereby the desired lactone product can be obtained at high selectivity under a mild condition as compared with the conventional methods.

A process for preparing a sucrose fatty acid ester by interesterification between sucrose and a lower alkanol ester or glyceride of a fatty acid in the presence of an ion exchange resin is disclosed, wherein said ion exchange resin is a cation exchange resin having a carboxyl group having been ion-exchanged with an alkali metal and/or an alkaline earth metal. A process is described for producing methylenedicarbanilates by reacting carbanilates with formaldehyde in the presence of a specific catalyst. A cobalt component is separated from a hydroesterification reaction mixture obtained by reacting a polyhydric alcohol with an olefin and carbon monoxide in the presence of a cobalt carbonyl complex and a pyridine base, by contacting (a) pyridine or .gamma.-picoline and (b) water with said reaction mixture containing the cobalt component and the product of a fatty acid ester of the polyhydric alcohol to separate it into two phases consisting of a phase containing the fatty acid ester of polyhydric alcohol and a phase containing a cobalt component. In the process, the weight ratio of pyridine or .gamma.-picoline to the product ester is 0.5 to 5 and the weight ratio of water to pyridine or .gamma.-picoline is 0.05 to 10.
