The present disclosure includes systems and methods for reducing rewrite overhead in a sequential access storage system. The method may comprise writing a data set to a sequential access medium using a magnetic head, wherein the data set comprises a plurality of encoded data blocks, classifying each of the plurality of encoded data blocks on the sequential access medium into one of at least three classes of write quality, and rewriting the encoded data blocks in a rewrite area of the sequential access medium based at least in part on the write quality class. In some embodiments, the at least three classes of write quality may comprise a hard rewrite class for which rewrites are necessary to prevent data loss, a soft rewrite class for which rewrites are desirable but not necessary, and a no rewrite class for which no rewrite is needed or desired.

A first aspect of the present disclosure provides a chair. Mechanisms are provided to receive encoded header information stored on a tape of a tape drive, wherein the encoded header information has been generated by: generating, for a plurality of tracks of the tape of the tape drive, a header information in a plurality of symbols, wherein the plurality of symbols is comprised of a first set of symbols and a second set of symbols, wherein the first set of symbols include identical information across all tracks of the plurality of tracks, and wherein the second set of symbols are configurable to include different information across all tracks of the plurality of tracks; and modifying, for writing to the tape of the tape drive, the first set of symbols of the plurality of tracks to include parity information corresponding to information included in the second set of symbols of the plurality of tracks. The received encoded header information is decoded.

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a method of writing a dataset to a tape, the dataset comprising a plurality of sub datasets, each sub dataset including a plurality of headers and a plurality of records. The method includes storing, in each header of each sub dataset, at least a portion of a record range indicator indicating a range of records included in the dataset.

In an approach to adaptive tape calibration criteria based on the number of dead tracks, the number of rewrite occurrences for each dead track on a tape drive is determined. Responsive to detecting that a head is in a dead track state, the number of dead tracks is stored on the tape drive. A calibration threshold is determined, where the calibration threshold includes the number of dead track rewrites and the calibration reference value for a specific tape drive type. Responsive to the number of rewrite occurrences exceeding the calibration threshold while writing a data set, a calibration of the tape drive.

In an approach to adaptive tape calibration criteria based on the number of stop writes, the number of rewrite occurrences caused by a stop write is determined for each specific tape drive type. Responsive to detecting a stop write during a write operation, the total number of stop writes is stored on the tape drive. A rewrite calibration threshold is determined, where the rewrite calibration threshold includes the total number of stop writes on the tape drive and a calibration reference value for the specific tape drive type. Responsive to the number of rewrite occurrences caused by the stop write exceeding the rewrite calibration threshold while writing a data set on the tape drive, a calibration of the tape drive is performed.

A methodology that enables, for example, tape drive operation at lower SNR and/or reduced rewrite area uses a first threshold T and a second threshold r for a rewrite condition. Codeword interleaves (CWIs) in a data set are written onto a plurality of simultaneously-written parallel tracks of a magnetic recording medium, read back and error correction decoded. A determination is made as to whether at least one of the Cor C' codewords in each decoded CWI contains more byte errors than the second threshold r of the rewrite condition. A number of CWIs in a rewrite buffer are according to the following criteria: b&#x2032;=b&#x2212;T when bis greater than the first threshold T, and b&#x2032;=0 when bis less than or equal to the first threshold T.

A toner contains toner particles, titanate fine particles having a Group II element, and hydrotalcite compound fine particles as an external additive and satisfying 10&#x2264;Lt&#x2264;80 and 100&#x2264;Lh&#x2264;Weight average particle diameter (D4) of toner particles&#xd7;0.50, when the number average particle diameter (D1) of primary particles of the titanate fine particles is defined as Lt (nm) and the number average particle diameter (D1) of primary particles of the hydrotalcite compound fine particles is defined as Lh (nm).

In one embodiment, a system includes a controller and logic integrated with and/or executable by the controller. The logic is configured to perform iterative decoding on encoded data to obtain decoded data. The logic is also configured to perform post-decoding error diagnostics on a first portion of the decoded data in response to not obtaining a valid product codeword in the first portion after the iterative decoding of the encoded data. Other systems, methods, and computer program products for producing post-decoding error signatures are presented in accordance with more embodiments.

According to one embodiment, a system includes a controller configured to determine whether a position error signal (PES) is invalid while reading data from a magnetic medium using at least one data channel. An invalid PES indicates off-track reading or a defect in the magnetic medium. The controller is also configured to determine whether a PES value is above a first predetermined threshold in response to a determination that the PES is valid. Moreover, the controller is configured to inject error bits into a data stream in place of corresponding bits of decoded data in response to a determination that the PES is invalid, a determination that the PES value is above the first predetermined threshold, or a determination that the PES is invalid and the PES value is above the first predetermined threshold. Other systems and methods are described in accordance with more embodiments.
