A medium transport portion includes a main body portion, a tray unit, and a support guide member. The main body portion includes a first manual feed path and a second manual feed path. The tray unit can be accommodated in the main body portion in a non-use state, and a medium is mounted thereon in a use state. The support guide member is movable in a Z-direction, and supports the tray unit such that a first position that the tray unit is positioned in the first manual feed path, a second position of being positioned in the second manual feed path, and a third position of being accommodated in the main body portion are switched.

An openable cover automatic opening mechanism includes a lever rotatable about a rotation fulcrum, a locking section that is positioned at one end of the lever and that maintains the openable cover, which is in a closed state and which receives an opening force, in the closed state by locking with the openable cover, and a power receiving section positioned at the other end of the lever for contacting the horizontally moving carriage to receive power of the carriage. The lever rotates when the carriage comes into contact with and presses the power receiving section, and releases maintenance of the closed state of the openable cover by the locking section.

A medium feeding device includes a feeding roller that is provided in a medium feeding path through which a medium is fed and that feeds a medium downstream by rotating in the forward direction in response to power of a motor, a nip roller that is provided in the medium feeding path and that nips a medium in cooperation with the feeding roller and rotates, and a controller configured to control the motor. Based on an increase in a variation value varying in accordance with a drive load of the motor, the controller controls the motor and causes the feeding roller to start a medium feeding operation.

A printing apparatus includes an automatic opening mechanism for an opening/closing cover, a carriage that has a print head configured to perform printing on a medium and that moves in a direction intersecting a transport direction of the medium, and a discharge portion that is exposed in a state in which the opening/closing cover is opened and that discharges a printed material. The automatic opening mechanism includes a lever for releasing maintenance of a closed state of the opening/closing cover by movement of the carriage. The discharge portion discharges the printed material outside the apparatus. A recording device includes a reading device including a reading unit that reads an image of a document, a placement unit at which a medium is placed, and a recording unit that performs recording on the medium transported from the placement unit. A size of the medium is determined by emitting light from the reading unit toward a detection target and calculating a position thereof, the position of the detection target changing in accordance with the size of the medium placed at the placement unit.

A recording apparatus includes: a housing; a recording section that performs a recording operation on a medium and is disposed inside the housing; a storage section that stores the medium; a transport route along which the medium is transported; a transport section that transports the medium; a reading section that reads an original sheet and is positioned higher than the recording section; a supply section that supplies the original sheet to the reading section; and a supply route through which the original sheet passes. Each of the supply and transport routes is formed at substantially right angles to a width of the housing. The transport route has a curved section in which the medium is turned over. The reading section is positioned behind the recording section in a depth direction from the front to rear surface of the housing.

A medium transport apparatus includes a body portion, an inversion unit, and an extension unit. The body portion has a second manual feed path for a sheet material. The inversion unit is configured to be mounted on and separated from the body portion, covers the second manual feed path when the attachment/detachment portion is mounted the body portion, and exposes a portion of the second manual feed path when the attachment/detachment portion is separated from the body portion. The extension unit is configured to be attached to and detached from the attachment/detachment portion. The extension unit extends, in a state in which the inversion unit is separated, the second manual feed path in a transport direction of the sheet material by being detached from the inversion unit and attached to the body portion.
