A component adjustor is added to an incineration residue containing salts to adjust a component ratio determined by the equation (Ca&plus;Mg)/(Si&plus;Al) in the range of 0.7 to 2.0. The incineration residue having the adjusted component ratio is charged to a melting furnace maintained in a reducing atmosphere to form a melt. The melt is separated into a molten slag layer, a molten salt layer, and a molten metal layer. The molten slag is fractionated and discharged from the melting furnace. The discharged molten slag is rapidly cooled. The temperature of the vapor phase in the melting furnace is maintained at 700 to 1000&deg; C. A non-oxidizing gas is blown into the vapor phase in the melting furnace to increase the amounts of exhaust gases exhausted from the melting furnace.

A method of melting an incineration residue includes steps of: charging an incineration residue containing salts into a melting furnace; heating the charged incineration residue in the melting furnace to produce a melt which includes a molten slag layer and a molten salt layer on the molten slag layer; controlling a temperature of the molten salt in the molten salt layer; discharging the molten slag from the melting furnace; and discharging the molten salt from the melting furnace. Method for melting incineration residue and apparatus therefor

A method for recovering phosphorus from organic sludge includes the steps of producing incinerated ash from organic sludge, mixing the incinerated ash with a carbon source, vaporizing phosphorus from phosphorus compounds in the incinerated ash by heating the incinerated ash mixed with the carbon source in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, preferably, at 1,000 to 1,250.degree. C., and recovering phosphorus by bringing the vaporized phosphorus into contact with water to condense the vaporized phosphorus. Alternatively, the vaporized phosphorus is oxidized to phosphorus pentoxide, and phosphorus is recovered as phosphoric acid by bringing the phosphorus pentoxide into contact with water. Instead of the steps of producing incinerated ash from organic sludge and mixing a carbon source with the incinerated ash, by dehydrating and drying organic sludge and carbonizing organic substances in the organic sludge, preferably, at 400 to 700.degree. C., similar effects can be obtained.

C. and followed by the TiF.sub.4 separation of solid.
