A sheet handling device includes: a first storage; a second storage using a storage method different form that of the first storage; a transporter that transports a sheet; and a controller that controls the transporter to transport the sheet. When the second storage is neither a transport source of the sheet nor a transport destination of the sheet, the controller controls the transporter to transport the sheet at a first speed. When the second storage is at least the transport source of the sheet or the transport destination of the sheet, the controller controls the transporter to transport the sheet at a second speed lower than the first speed.

A controller classifies the paper sheets into a plurality of types different in thickness distribution based on the result of recognition, manages the number of paper sheets of each type stacked in the stacking unit, and makes a determination whether to permit the stacking of the paper sheets in the stacking unit based on the type of the paper sheets recognized by the recognition unit, and the number of paper sheets of each type that have been stacked in the stacking unit.

Paper sheet processing device and control method therefor

A banknote handling apparatus stores a code list in which codes of banknotes stored in a storage unit are arranged in order in which the banknotes are stored. The banknote handling apparatus reads the codes when the banknotes are sequentially fed from the storage unit, and checks a target group of the codes of N successive banknotes including the last fed banknote (N is a natural number not less than 2) against the code list. When the target group and a reference group of the codes of N successive banknotes in the code list match each other, the banknotes remaining in the storage unit after the feeding of the banknotes are identified by regarding one of the codes of the reference group in the code list as a boundary.
