An image reading apparatus includes a separating roller that is capable of switching between a separation state in which an original document is separated and a non-separation state in which the original document is not separated, and determines whether or not the original document is fed in the separation state or the non-separation state based on the types of the original document set through a user interface for instructing a select of the types of the original document to be read and a start of reading the original document.

An image reading apparatus includes a main body, a touch panel, a document transport path, a feed tray, a feed roller, a separation unit, a reader, a discharge roller, a discharge tray, and a mounting table. The mounting table is provided on an upper side of the main body and includes an upper surface. The mounting table is located at an outer face of the main body, the upper surface serves as a mounting surface on which the source document to be fed or the source document that has been read is mounted. The mounting surface is located at a position higher than an upstream end of the feed tray when the source document is mounted on the mounting surface.

An image reading apparatus includes an output tray that receives a medium which is output thereon; an output roller pair that outputs the medium onto the output tray; an output-tray posture switching portion that switches a posture of the output tray with respect to the apparatus body; and an output-direction switching portion that switches an output direction of the medium by using the output roller pair. An image reader includes a curvature forming unit that contacts a medium upstream of a nip position between a feeding roller and a separating roller, and forms a curvature of the medium in a width direction that intersects a feeding direction. The curvature forming unit is capable of switching between a first state in which a curvature is formed in a medium and a second state positioned in a direction that is retracted from a feeding path of the medium compared to the first state. The curvature forming unit is associated with posture switching of the device body, and is brought to the second state when the device body takes a first device posture, and is brought to the first state when the device body takes the second device posture.

A medium feeding apparatus includes a pickup roller that feeds a medium from a medium mount section. A support member supports a pickup roller and swings around a swing axis to switch between a feeding position and a non-feeding position. A separation roller separates the medium from other media. A feed roller feeds the medium toward the downstream end. The separation and feed rollers are disposed downstream of the pickup roller. A control section controls a position of the support member. After the pickup roller and the feed roller start rotating, when the control section determines that the separation roller stops rotating or returns the medium by rotating in a reverse direction, based on a detection signal from a rotation sensing section configured to detect rotation of the separation roller, the control section causes the support member to switch from the feeding position to the non-feeding position.
