A first cutter(cutting unit) is provided between a color recording unit(the first printing unit) and an overcoat recording unit(the second printing unit). A portion whereon color printing is completed by the color recording unitof a recording paper(printing medium) is cut off by the first cutterand detached. An overcoat recording unitperforms an overcoat process on the detached recording paper (printing medium strip). In parallel with this, the color recording unitperforms next color printing on the recording paper. This makes it possible to reduce a printing time in a printing device including a plurality of printing processes without deteriorating printing quality. Further, an useless paper feeding is eliminated by optimally arranging the color recording unit, the first cutter, the overcoat recording unit, and the second cutter, etc. in accordance with a size of a printing area.

A transmissive color liquid crystal display including a first liquid crystal section, a light-guiding element, a second liquid crystal section, and first and second liquid crystal drivers. The first liquid crystal section presents color images. The light-guiding element is situated behind the first liquid crystal section for orienting rays toward the first liquid crystal display section. The second liquid crystal section includes a plurality of zones capable of transmitting wavelength bands of external rays, respectively. While color-component data extracted from full color image data is input into the first liquid crystal driver in a time-division manner, the first liquid crystal driver activates and deactivates pixels on the first liquid crystal section for presenting images on the first liquid crystal display on the basis of the color-component data in time division manner. The second liquid crystal driver selectively activates the zones in the second liquid crystal section in time division manner for introducing colored external rays of which wavelength bands correspond to the color-component data through the zone to the light-guiding element for irradiating the images on the first liquid crystal section with the colored external rays in time division manner.

In an optical printing apparatus with employment of a low-cost arrangement, a high image quality recording operation is realized. The optical printing apparatus is arranged by including: image data input device for inputting image data; image data correcting device for correcting the inputted image data in such a manner that a density fluctuation is deleted in correspondence with elements of a print head; reference level producing device for producing a reference level; comparing device for comparing multi-value data outputted from the image data correcting device with the reference level so as to convert the multi-value data into binary data; data transferring device for transferring the binary data outputted from the comparing device as head data to the print head; latch control device for latching data of the print data; and strobe control device for enabling the print head to expose the light therefrom; whereby the print head is driven in response to the output results of the data transferring device, the latch control device, and the strobe control device to thereby form the gradation image. As a result, this optical printing apparatus is capable of forming an image with uniform density in low cost, and furthermore, can correct fluctuations of the elements of the print head in high precision.

In an optical printing apparatus, an image having a high image quality is desirably produced under stable condition, even when variations occur and exposure conditions are different from each other, which are caused by differences in response speeds of a light source and a liquid crystal shutter element, and also by differences in element driving conditions. The optical printing apparatus is arranged by including: image data input for inputting image data; reference level generator producing a reference level; comparator for comparing multi-value data outputted from the image data input with the reference level so as to convert the multi-value data into binary data; data transferring element for transferring the binary data outputted from the comparator as head data to the print head; latch controller for latching data of the print data; and strobe controller capable of causing the print head to expose the light therefrom. Then, the liquid crystal shutter element corresponding to a non-recording pixel is also ON/OFF-driven. Accordingly, deterioration in the image quality and color shifts, which are caused by a difference in driving intervals, can be solved.

In an optical printing apparatus for selectively exposing light with respect to a photosensitive recording medium to thereby form a gradation image thereon, there are provided; image data input device for entering more than 4 colors of spectral image data; storage device for storing thereinto the entered spectral image data in the unit of either 1 screen or 1 line; an optical head for outputting more than 4 sorts of light having different wavelengths from each other; and head driving device for converting the stored spectral image data into predetermined exposure time periods, and turning ON the more than 4 sorts of light so as to ON/OFF-drive the optical print head. As a result, this optical printing apparatus is capable of performing a high image quality recording operation. More specifically, a realistic image having a material feeling is formed.
