An ear thermometer which includes a temperature detection element and infrared detection element arranged near the opening portion of a probe achieves a reduction in manufacturing cost while reducing the influence of thermal shock. This invention provides an ear thermometer incorporating, in a probe, a temperature detection element to detect an environmental temperature and an infrared detection element to detect infrared radiation emitted from a temperature measurement region in an earhole. The probe includes an end face portion having an opening in its distal end, an inner surface portion of a hollow cylindrical member, and an inwardly protruding engaging portion. A detection element housing is fixed to close the opening of the probe and to form an air layer between the detection element housing and the probe.

Method and apparatus for measuring temperature of a living body

An electronic clinical thermometer for predicting a sensed temperature that will prevail at a future time is equipped with a predetermined predictive functional formula in which values of predetermined coefficient parameters for superimposing the prediction function on a sensed temperature curve are undetermined. Temperature data indicative of sensed body temperature are stored in correlation with elapsed time from the start of measurement, and plural items of the temperature data are read out by a predetermined method as measurement proceeds. By performing regression analysis based on a plurality of the predictive functional formulae, or by solving simultaneous equations constituted by the plurality of predicitve functional formulae, in which the sensed temperature data that have been read serve as purposive variables and functions of time data related to the temperature data serve as explicative variables, the values of the coefficient parameters are set. Prediction processing is executed to calculate sensed temperature that will prevail at a future time in accordance with the predictive functional formula specified by the set values of the coefficient parameters.

Disclosed is a blood pressure measurement apparatus in which a waveform discrimination method is used in the recognition of Korotkoff sounds in the measurement of blood pressure by auscultation. In processing executed by the apparatus, the minimum point or maximum point (C3) of a signal waveform indicative of the sound or vibration produced by a blood vessel is detected, and a maximum value or minimum value point (C2) is detected within a predetermined time region (t.sub.1) the final instant of which is the point (C3). If a level difference between the point (C2) and the point (C3) is within a predetermined range, there is detected a minimum value or maximum value point (C1) within a predetermined time region (t.sub.2) the final instant of which is (C2). If a level difference between the point (C1) and the point (C2) is within a predetermined range, there is detected a maximum value or minimum value point (C4) within a predetermined time region (t.sub.3) the starting instant of which is the point (C3). It is then discriminated whether a level difference between the point (C4) and the point (C3) falls within a predetermined range. Control proceeds in successive fashion when each of these conditions is satisfied, with a Korotkoff sound being recognized in the signal waveform when all of these conditions are satisfied.

A sphygmomanometer includes a pump for applying variable pressure to a blood vessel, a microphone for sensing oscillation which is produced from the blood vessel being pressurized by the pump, a pressure detecting section for sensing the pressure being applied to the blood vessel, and a Korotkoff sound recognizing section for recognizing Korotkoff sounds out of the oscillation detected by the microphone. When the recognizing section has recognized a Korotkoff sound, the instantaneous pressure on the blood vessel is detected by the pressure detecting section to measure blood pressure. Recognition of Korotkoff sounds by the recognizing section is inhibited until a predetermined period of time expires since the recognition of a Korotkoff sound, to prevent the tailing of a Korotkoff sound from being recognized erroneously.

A sphygmomanometer measures blood pressure inclusive of systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, pulse rate and atmospheric temperature prevailing at the time of measurement. The sphygmomanometer includes a memory for storing plural sets of information relating to measured blood pressure together with time information relating to the times at which the measurements were taken, and a printer for generating a graph having a time axis and an axis for information relating to blood pressure. In a first output mode, the printer graphically records systolic and diastolic blood pressure values that prevailed at the time of measurement, connects these two values with a line segment and graphically records pulse rate and atmospheric temperature that prevailed at the time of measurement on the time axis together with the corresponding systolic and diastolic blood pressure values. In a second output mode, the printer numerically records systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, date and time of measurement, pulse rate and atmospheric temperature and in addition produces a graph pattern of reference blood pressure regions with axes of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and with the measured blood pressure indicated thereon.

A method and apparatus for measuring the circulatory function of a living body in which a systolic blood pressure value is measured based on recognition of an initial Korotkoff sound made at the start of a reduction in pressure of a pressurized cuff affixed to a patient's arm. After the recognition of the initial Korotkoff sound, conditions are relaxed to enable measurement of pulse rate, judgment of the correctness of the systolic blood pressure value and a dicision as to whether applied pressure is adequate, all on the basis of sounds from the patient's blood vessel. Finally, diastolic blood pressure is measured based again on recognition of the Korotkoff sound.
