A magnetic recording medium is provided which includes a non-magnetic base, and a non-magnetic metal base layer, a magnetic layer, and a protective layer, which are laminated in the order of description on the non-magnetic base, wherein the non-magnetic metal base layer is formed from an alloy film in which at least one element selected from the group consisting of W, Ta, Hf, Mo, Cr, Zr and Nb is added to NiAl.

Magnetic recording medium and method for manufacturing the same

In a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, a non-metallic metal base layer, a ferromagnetic alloy thin-film magnetic layer and a protective layer are successively laminated on a non-magnetic substrate. The ferromagnetic alloy thin-film magnetic layer consists of a first magnetic layer and a second magnetic layer. In the method of the present invention, the first magnetic layer is formed in an atmosphere containing an Ar gas, and the second magnetic layer is formed in an atmosphere containing a mixture of Ar and N.sub.2 gases.

Method for manufacturing magnetic recording medium

A magnetic recording medium is provide which includes at least a base layer and a multiple-film magnetic layer formed on a substrate. The multiple-film magnetic layer includes two to six magnetic films formed of a material selected from CoNiCrTa alloy, CoCrPt alloy and CoCrTaPt alloy. The magnetic films are laminated on each other with a non-magnetic intermediate layer interposed between each pair of the magnetic films. The non-magnetic intermediate film is formed of a Cr alloy containing an element selected from Mo, Ta, Ti and W.

Magnetic recording medium

In a magnetic recording medium in which at least Cr or Cr-alloy base layer and Co-alloy magnetic layer are formed in this order on a substrate, a seed layer is provided between the substrate and the base layer. In a preferred embodiment, the seed layer is made of a material selected from Al--Co, Cu--Si, Ni--Ga, Cu--Be, Mn--V, Ni--Zn and Fe--V each having a specific composition. Where the substrate is formed of a glass material, the base layer and magnetic layer are formed by sputtering on the substrate while the substrate is kept at a temperature of 150.degree. to 300.degree. C. and a bias voltage of -300 to 0 V is applied to the substrate.

A magnetic recording head that includes a combined IN element and an MR element is heat treated under two types of magnetic fields. A rotating magnetic field, having a first magnetic field intensity, is applied for a time while the magnetic recording head is at an elevated temperature. Then, part-way during cooling of the magnetic head, the rotating magnetic field is replaced by a direct (non-rotating) magnetic field having a second magnetic field intensity. The second magnetic field intensity is lower than the first magnetic field intensity, whereby the properties of both the IN element and the MR element are maintained at high values.

Heat treatment method for thin film magnetic head

A thin-film magnetic head is disclosed that includes a lower magnetic core and an upper magnet core formed on the surface of a substrate and connected together at a first end thereof, a magnetic gap is formed between the lower and upper magnetic cores at a second end thereof, and a coil-form electric conductive layer is located between the lower magnetic core and the upper magnet core. The lower and upper magnetic cores have a saturated magnetic flux density from 10,000 G to 18,000 G, while the magnetic permeability along the magnetic path of the magnetic head is 3,000 or higher at a frequency of 10 MHz. The unique characteristics of the magnetic head are obtained by heating an arrangement comprising the lower and upper magnetic cores, the magnetic gap layer, and the electric conductive layer to a temperature above 325.degree. C., and applying an external magnetic field greater than 0.01 kOe to the lower and upper magnetic cores to relax their magnetic anisotropy as the lower and upper magnetic cores are cooled during the manufacturing process.

High permeability thin-film magnetic head and method of manufacture

A thin film magnetic head includes a magnetic core composed of upper and lower magnetic pole films spaced apart to define a read-write gap and a coil disposed between the upper and lower magnetic pole films in an area outside of the gap. The upper and lower magnetic pole films each comprise a thin-film laminate having alternating magnetic and non-magnetic thin films. The magnetic thin film includes an amorphous Co alloy having a soft magnetic property and a thickness within a range of 0.1 .mu.m to 0.5 .mu.m and the non-magnetic thin-film includes a non-magnetic metal or an insulating nitride.
