A dispersion compensating optical fiber for NZ-DSFs, includes: an uncovered dispersion compensating optical fiber; a double-layered resin coating disposed around the uncovered dispersion compensating optical fiber; and an outer coating layer having a thickness of 3 to 7 &#x3bc;m, containing silicone in an amount of 1 to 5% by weight, and disposed around the double-layered resin coating. The outer diameter of the uncovered dispersion compensating optical fiber is in a range from 90 to 125 &#x3bc;m, an outer diameter of the dispersion compensating optical fiber is in a range from 180 to 250 &#x3bc;m, and the amount of silicone contained in the outer coating layer is determined such that an adhesive property of the outer coating layer is 1 gf/mm or less.

An optical fiber cable that sustains reduced increase in transmission loss and optical fiber breakage when subject to external pressure exerted thereon, comprises an aggregate of elements including central buffer filaments disposed in the center part of the optical fiber cable and a plurality of optical fibers disposed around the central buffer filaments, as well as circumferential strength filaments disposed around the outer periphery of the aggregate of elements, and a sheath covering the circumferential strength filaments.

A distinctive optical fiber comprises an optical fiber core, distinctive layers, and a colored layer. A plurality of the distinctive layers including fine drops of ink having a specific particle size is disposed intermittently on the optical fiber core in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber core. The colored layer is disposed on the distinctive layers and on the optical fiber core on which the distinctive layers are not disposed. The following five requirements are required for obtaining the distinctive optical fiber excellent in distinctiveness and with low transmission loss. The thickness of the colored layer is chosen so as to be larger than or equal to 2 &#x3bc;m and smaller than or equal to 10 &#x3bc;m. The thickness of the distinctive layers is chosen so as to be larger than or equal to 0.5 &#x3bc;m and smaller than or equal to 2.5 &#x3bc;m. The length of the distinctive layers is chosen so as to be larger than or equal to 1 mm and smaller than or equal to 15 mm. The interval of the distinctive layers is chosen so as to be in the range between 1 mm and 200 mm. The occupied ratio of the distinctive layers is chosen so as to be less than or equal to 20%. The major diameter of the fine drops of ink is chosen so as to be larger than or equal to 100 &#x3bc;m and smaller than or equal to 400 &#x3bc;m.

Optical fiber and optical fiber cable using the same

A resin liquid is provided which is used to produce an optical fiber coating layer which does not degrade over time in long-period transmission characteristics of the optical fiber. An optical fiber in which long-period transmission characteristics do not degrade is also provided. In order to achieve these objects, the present invention provides a resin liquid for an optical fiber coating layer containing at least one resin, wherein the resin liquid contains fewer than 500 pieces of extraneous material per 1 ml of the resin liquid, which have a minimum length of 0.5 &#x3bc;m or more and a hardness greater than a hardness of the resin liquid after curing.

The manufacturing apparatus for optical fiber cord is provided with an extrusion machine, a cooling chamber, an intermediate pulling device, a heating chamber, a final pulling device, and a winding machine wherein the machines, the devices and the chambers are disposed in this order. One or more optical fiber cores and one or more reinforcing fibers are sheathed with thermoplastic resin by the extrusion machine. The thermoplastic resin is solidified by cooling so as to be a resin sheath. The sheathed fibers are annealed by the heating chamber so that its residual stress is relieved.

An optical fiber drop cable includes an optical element portion having an optical fiber core wire and a pair of first tension members disposed parallel to the optical fiber core wire on both sides thereof in a sandwiching manner. The optical fiber core wire and the pair of first tension members are coated with a cable sheath. A long-scale cable support wire portion has a second tension member coated with a sheath. The optical element portion and the cable support wire portion are adhered parallel to each other. The first tension members are composed of a nonconductive material. A flexural rigidity of the optical element portion is in a range from 80 to 500 Nmm.

An optical fiber drop cable is disclosed including an elongated optical element section composed of an optical fiber core wire and at least one pair of adjacent first tensile strength members, disposed on both sides of the optical fiber core wire in parallel thereto, which are covered with a cable sheath, and an elongated cable support wire section having a second tensile strength member covered with a sheath and adhered to the optical element section in parallel thereto.
