A leukocyte separator for trapping and separating leukocytes from blood is made of a porous material having a bubble point ranging from 0.08 to 0.3 kg/cm.sup.2 and a thickness of at least 0.30 mm. The leukocyte separator is manufactured by pressing a porous material having a bubble point smaller than 0.13 kg/cm.sup.2 to produce a porous material having a thickness of at least 0.3 mm and a bubble point ranging from 0.13 to 0.3 kg/cm.sup.2.

A liquid filtering device for separating leukocytes from blood to produce concentrated red cells, for example, includes a housing having a liquid inlet port and a liquid outlet port and providing a flow passage from the liquid inlet port to the liquid outlet port, a partition plate fixedly disposed in the housing, a first filter element disposed in the housing in an upstream position with respect to the flow passage, and a second filter element disposed in the housing in a downstream position with respect to the flow passage, the second filter element being made of a material having a larger filtration resistance than the first filter element. The second filter element has an outer peripheral edge fixed directly to the partition plate in a liquidtight manner in surrounding relation to the first filter element.

A body fluid purification method which comprises passing the body fluid through an apparatus for purifying a body fluid by removing micro-aggregates, histamine, etc, from the body fluid. A method for the manufacture of an artificial organ having a film of a fat-soluble vitamin deposited on the surfaces of parts of said artificial organ susceptible to contact with body fluid in motion through a zone for flow of said body fluid within said artificial organ, which method is characterized by the steps of causing a solution of said fat-soluble vitamin in an organic solvent to flow into said zone for flow of body fluid within said artificial organ and allowing said parts to be amply wetted with said solution, then discharging an excess of said solution out of said artificial organ, and subsequently drying said solution deposited on said parts thereby expelling said organic solvent from the solution. The invention also provides a method for sterilizing said artificial organ after contact with a physiologically harmless liquid.

Method for manufacturing artificial organ

An artificial organ is disclosed which has a film of either fat-soluble vitamin or a mixture of fat-soluble vitamin with glycerin deposited on the surfaces of parts of the artificial organ adapted to contact body fluid under treatment in a zone for flow of the body fluid within the artificial organ. Also disclosed is a sterilized artificial organ which has the aforementioned coat further subjected to contact with a physiologically harmless liquid and a treatment for sterilization.
