A battery system is provided with a plurality of battery units each including a battery module consisting of a plurality of battery cells, a unit control unit, and a connector, and controls the overall operation of the respective battery units in a main control unit. To the plurality of connectors of the battery units, an external unit can be selectively connected so that voltage adjustment for inhibiting voltage variations among the plurality of battery cells or the plurality of battery modules can be realized by using the external unit. The external unit is connected to the battery unit for which voltage adjustment is necessary on the basis of a voltage adjustment necessity determination.

An object is to provide a driving device capable of smoothly shifting from a starting state to a sensor-less vector control, in a case where the device drives a motor by the sensor-less vector control, and the device includes a voltage detecting circuit which detects an induced electromotive voltage of the motor. A control circuit starts the motor by rectangular wave control. A magnetic pole position of a rotor is detected based on an induced electromotive voltage of one remaining phase of the motor detected by the voltage detecting circuit. The control circuit controls a main inverter circuit based on the detected magnetic pole position, and accelerates the motor by the rectangular wave control. In a case where a predetermined shift revolution speed is reached, the control circuit shifts to vector control by the sensor-less in which the magnetic pole position detected during the rectangular wave control is used as an initial value.

The invention provides a load detecting system comprising a core () of magnetostrictive material, a coil () disposed in the vicinity of the core, and a load detecting circuit () connected to the coil () for detecting the magnitude of a load acting on the core (). A washing machine according to the present invention includes a pressure sensor provided at a rod holding plate holding a suspension rod with which an outer tub is suspended. The pressure sensor is constructed so that a coil is wound around a magnetostrictive element whose magnetic characteristic changes when it is expanded, compressed or twisted by an external force. The change in the magnetic characteristic is converted to the change in the inductance of the coil, and an oscillating signal of a frequency corresponding to the inductance generated. Based on the frequency of the signal, the load on the pressure sensor is detected. Before supplying water, the amount of the laundry contained in a wash-and-extraction tub is detected based on the output of the pressure sensor, and an object water level corresponding to the amount is determined. After that, a water supply valve is opened to start supplying water into the wash-and-extraction tub. The weight of water supplied is monitored based on the output of the pressure sensor, and the weight is converted to a water level. When the monitored water level has attained the object water level, the water supply is stopped. Thus, the pressure sensor functions not only as a load detector but also as a level sensor.
